New Innovative Madden On The Way

During a conference call today EA CEO John Riccitello mentioned an “innovative and new take on Madden” would be arriving in the upcoming fiscal year. No further details were provided which means speculation is naturally going to spiral out of control. Given that he stated this “new take on Madden” would arrive sometime in fiscal 2011 (April 2010-March 2011) it is probably not at all related to the standard yearly version of Madden that will release for the 360 and PS3.

I would think the statement would most likely be in reference to the Wii where Madden has really struggled to gain traction and actually fell off this year from already low sales numbers. EA Sports could try and revamp Madden for the Wii again or maybe Riccitello was making reference to the NFL Trainer game that has been rumored but yet to be announced. It could also be related to Project Natal which will launch in November opening the possibility of a motion controlled version of Madden for the 360.

This statement though does come just days after announcing that Mark Turmell has joined EA as the Creative Director for NCAA Football and Madden. Whether it is just a coincidence or if the two pieces of news are linked in some way is something to consider.

I believe the NFL contract requires they put a game out on every system though. So they have to figure something out.

They should just bring back the NFL quarterback challenge. I can see the white football peripheral now.

I used to love playing those games back in the day.

EA needs to focus on one aspect of football and apply the WII motion capabilities to it. Football in its entirety will never be fun to play by flapping your arms around the living room.

If EA want to see any kind of football success on the WII, they'll use the Madden name to make another QB challenge game.

anything to drastically change Madden after years of releasing the same thing. They paid big money for that NFL license and it's just not financially reasonable to also spend a lot of money improving or changing the game.

Anybody else tired of the Wii f-ing things up for the other consoles? Seems to me like they always get a crappy knock-off version of the games we get, almost like a waste of development talent.

Pasta, how come you didn't mention that EA also disclosed higher than expected LOSSES (almost double the forecasted amount) during the investor call? The EA CEO also mentioned "disappointing" sales for Madden 10.

Maybe they're losing GOBS of money because they grossly overpaid for the exclusive license to put their competition out of business, and hire designers who can't figure out how to get the football to spin the right way. You know, the same designers who wouldn't know a realistic TV broadcast replay angle if it bit them in the ass.

You know a lot of times companies get so big they forget where they came from and have hard time backtracking or just making simple adjustments. The exclusive NFL deal is hurting Madden because people are expecting so much more and we do not have any other alternative. Just imagine if McDonald's had the sole rights to cheeseburgers, well people would complain that they don't make them like Wendy's or Burger King use to before they were granted the exclusive rights. I think it would be a good business approach to be relived from the exclusivity of the deal and and go back to a grassroots competitive spirit. Madden will still be the dominate name but it would give people the ability of choosing them over the competition instead of choosing them because they are the only competition. People love choices and hate monopolies……..but heck what do I know

Think we should just wait and see what this means. While I was kinda worried about them getting the guy that did the Midway sports games w/ him saying that he's going to try and make the game fun for various people, it doesn't necessarily mean that he'll put in Madden 09-like features.

I cant wait for back breaker to come out, Im gonna be honest I probably wont like it but the tackling is so realistic that madden isnt gonna have a choice but to change its whole game engine for madden

EA will put more effort into attempts to prevent Backbreaker having a full edit mode than doing anything with Madden even remotely close to innovating. I fully expect to see them running to their lawyers when Backbreaker makes Madden look like poo on a stick, something my old copy of NFL 2K5 has been doing for half a decade.
