Final Roster Update Removes Kurt Warner

An interesting development out of the final roster update for Madden 10 is that players who have announced their retirement have been removed from the game completely. Kurt Warner, Junior Seau, and Bertrand Berry are no longer available for use with the update that arrived earlier this morning.

This caught me by complete surprise because it’s the first time that I’m aware of that off-season transactions have made their way into that previous year’s game. Madden 10 represents the 09-10 season and as such anything that happens after the season is over is not supposed to be reflected until Madden 11.

I’ve sent in a request to get a response as to why this action was taken but have not heard anything back yet. I’m also hoping to get a statement regarding the Online Franchise rosters which haven’t been updated since October. Given the Super Bowl weekend festivities I don’t expect to hear anything until at least Monday.

  • Erich

the roster update was half-assed as it was and to take out Warner makes no sense at all.

  • K.S.

I think this is kinda dumb. If you wanna take him out of the depth chart, then fine, but remove Warner from the game completely? Ridiculous.

  • http://newledger.com Ben Domenech

That is NOT cool. I'm going to have to avoid downloading this update if I want to start a new Franchise in the offseason, or I'll have to default back to the original roster (with none of the corrected player rankings).

  • Ron

I commented in another article that they should just make Warner retire after 1 season of franchise mode, but that's it. He played in the 09-10 season, and must be represented in this game. What if Favre retired Monday morning? And I heard a report that the Jaguars are planning to realease veterans Tra Thomas and Torry Holt. Would they update that? Probably not. Warner should be in the game. This is not Madden 11.

  • BearyChi

Was this Suppose to happen on Madden 11? why Know?

  • Ed

no update to online franchise rosters.. what a fucking joke EA, no wonder your game sucks balls, cant even do the simple things

  • GeorgeCostanza

    lol@still playing this rubbish

  • http://pastapadre.com/ pastapadre

While I agree its a problem that they haven't updated them even if they do now, I have heard that they planned to post-Super Bowl I just don't have confirmation on that.

  • Fabian aka fabby

thats the last straw EA this game is going back to gamefly and I dont think madden 11 is even on rental status for me next year.

  • gottem

Damn that!! Just get the ball to spin in the air and EA is good.

    “IT'S IN THE GAME”

  • Ed

well please let us know if so, im sure my group of friends arent the only ones wanting to do a new fantasy draft with the newest rosters

  • sheredia

dumb…..what if does a brett favre? this should only apply to next season. at least put him on the free agent list for this update…..sheesh.

  • timatheezon

why not put Shannahan on the Skins if they are gonna do this BULL

  • OOOTB

totally unfair. now i have to use leinart when I play online against teams who will get to keep all the free agents they lose coming up. lame

  • Les_is_More

Not a good idea. If a player plays in the season a game is developed for he should be in that game the entire run of that game. Makes absolutley no sense.

  • jusmegamer

Good job. Game is 7.5 at best but they are trying. This is a good move to show serious about a sim.

  • jusmegamer

great job if they are trying to be realistic, you guys are the problem, go play arcade games

  • jusmegamer

    Ha Ha HA

  • ahgo

I love the Cardinals that sucks!!! Do you really think they will do something about that? Like… fix it!!! C'mon it's a pass first team, now nobody will use them online :_________________(

  • JoeCB

I'm just glad I saved my roster that had Warner on it before I downloaded the new one.

  • Bob

That doesn't even make sense. Warner played the 2009-2010 season. He should stay in the game. Anything that takes place in the offseason belongs in Madden 11. What if Favre retires in the next week? He wouldn't be taken out of the game. Are all the coaching changes in the game? No. What happens for the Cardinals fans who want to play as their team in a Franchise mode? They'd have Leinart for the 2009-2010 season. If anything, this is more inaccurate. What happens in free agency when a bunch of players move around? The teams that they are currently on would still have them in this game. Either update the roster through the entire offseason or don't include any of the moves. This is a terrible job

  • what??

you make no sense. this is unrealistic because this game represents the 2009-2010 season. madden 11 represents everything from the offseason until the end of the next superbowl. warner retired in the cardinals' offseason. therefore he belongs in madden 11. simple logic. other offseason moves won't be included in a madden 10 roster update, and neither should warner's retirement

  • Bob

    you stole my name bro

  • Les_is_More

Exactly what i was gonna say. He retired and wont participate next season. So leave him on this years copy that doest add up to me at all

  • juan

this is some major B.S. hey pasta, is there any way you can ask these dudes if they plan to do one more update with the retired players back on their respective teams?? thanks

  • http://pastapadre.com/ pastapadre

Well the initial implication is that they did this on purpose, for what reason I don't know yet. So hopefully I'll either at least get an explanation with the slight possibility they bring them back in. Will update when I hear back.

  • NoFro904

    this season isnt over.
So TECHNICALLY he retired during the 2009-2010 season.

U guys want realistic updates here you.
There giving u the latest roster updates for the end of the year and u get mad when they remove someone.
If the guy retired then why should he still be part of the game

  • The Real N/A

Madden is breaking its own disclaimer: that rosters are reflected within the 2009-2010 NFL season. Weird.

  • okafor43

Ok so this means I wont be updating my rosters for the final update! damn you madden! If you gonna do this why not go the extra mile and add the draft picks in april!!! Bogus!

  • okafor43

I hope they do with the retired players taking effect next year and not this year's madden!

  • Steve-O

LOL makes no sense…Take this for example…

So lets say Dwight Freeny plays Sunday and he suffers a carrer ending injury to his ankle and he retires next week. He gets to stay on the game clear on up til the next one gets released? What if 20 more players retire over the next 2 weeks? what then?

This move baffles the absolute fuck out of me…now if someone loves the Cardinals and uses them in franchise mode they can't start the 2009 NFL season with Warner? LOL!!! this cracks me up.

  • CJ4Pres

I was just thinking, “If I was a Cardinals fan, I would be so ticked.”

  • http://twitter.com/TheImmortalGoud TheImmortalGoud

You could just save the roster you have now and then download the update. I do that for every update.

  • wangtang

    Request:

Add CB Tony Carter to the Denver Broncos (40yd dash, Low: 4.34; High: 4.52; Official: 4.43) 5'9″ 179lbs.
Reinstate WR Donte Stallworth to the Cleveland Browns (Roger Goodell has decided to reinstate Donte Stallworth on the day after the Super Bowl.)

“All Teams: Depth charts heading into 2010 season (except NO/IND)”
If true, then Kurt Warner is retired aka removed from the game. Good move (Only a good move if you are actually going to add rookies and other FA moves but EA probably won't.)

Now, we don't *KNOW* for sure if Stallworth will or will not be with the Browns.. but we do know that tomorrow he will be on the roster =)

    Thank you.

  • Bisett

You should be able to share those rosters.

    They need EALocker in Madden.

    Please Pasta pass that on.

  • http://twitter.com/deepen03 deepen03

it does make sense, Kurt Warner and all those guys didn't retire in the offseason.. Its still technically considered the 09-10 season until the Super Bowl is over man. think about it. Kurt Warner announced it during the playoffs. Yea the Cardinals' season was done, but that doesn't make it the offseason for the rest of the league. So it makes sense if you think further.

    • SDwinder

It makes no sense. It’s moronic….. period. No game has ever did this before. Some idiot at EA wasnt looking at the bigger picture which is now Warner is unavailable to use in Madden 10, when he played the entire season. That is all you need to know. Any other rationale is completely ignorant of this fact.

      EA fix this situation!!!

      • SDwinder

Madden 10 had a great year, but to end on this sour note is just pure stupidity!

  • http://www.zippygamer.com/ Jonathan

Yeah what the heck. They should remove him from next year's game, not the current one. Oh well…

  • http://www.camelclutchblog.com/ Eric

Does anyone know if they offer the last roster update anywhere I can download? I was half awake when DL the new roster this morning. The whole thing is ridiculous if this is supposed to be a game that represents the 09-10 season. I'm pretty irate and hope I can dl the last update. Any ideas?

  • Jim

He retired during the Cardinals's offseason. Their season is over, so anything that happened in their offseason shouldn't be reflected in this game. Start a new franchise with the Cardinals, and Kurt Warner is not there to start the 09-10 season. This is not accurate, or realistic because the other offseason transactions will not be included in this game.

  • zuludude

I think the madden community's reaction is far more interesting than their decision to remove Warner (and the others). For example, I never play Franchise mode and only play online league games and pick up games. So this will obviously affect individuals who love playing with their Warner and his three receivers.

Otherwise it is hardly noticeable to me. I think EA's mistake is their lack of communication with their fanbase. They started out so well in 2010, they simply need to continue speaking with us so we aren't surprised.

  • kevin_vikings_dude

hey that was pretty dumb i think
he is still part of this years roster he should still be there

  • kyle

ea sports has failed. i really hope theres a 2k11 but it probably wont be. i used to hate the 2k lovers until LIVE10 and nba 2k10 came out. i bought live and i liked it alright. then i went to a friends house and played 2k10. i went home, sold live, and bought 2k10. 2k just gets things done better. Pasta do you know anything whether or not theres gonna be ESPN NFL 2k11?

    • http://pastapadre.com/ pastapadre

The current exclusivity contract runs through Madden 13.

  • James

So they can leave out a shitload of players that teams have been adding throughout the season but are so quick to remove Warner?… Ridiculous, doesn’t effect me though sold that game 2 months after release. Never again will I purchase Madden on release day (or at all if they keep this up).

  • whiners

u guys want realizm and updated rosters everyweek.. well they did, they updated the rosters and someone thats not playing football no more to this date, is out of the game like he shuold be..

    • unbelievable

If we’re going for absolute realism we should stop playing the game. That makes sense, because there’s no football in spring or summer right?

  • Anonymous

Isn’t the “off-season” after the super bowl? So technically he didn’t retire in the off-season

  • Yancy

This is BS for sure. Otherwise why aren’t all the unrestricted free agents removed from the teams they played for this season?

    • whiners

because they still play the game, no matter what team theyre on.. Warners not going to play football no more, no more… so hes not in the game wich he doesnt play.

  • Mulnik

It’s sad they will take him out but leave Jim Johnson in franchise mode.

  • CREdd

as a cardinals fan this really upsets me. kurt played the whole season.

  • 5Two7

Pasta thanks for bringing light to this. A lot of posters on the EA forum are upset but no one listens there. Waiting to hear what they say about it now.

  • Aaron Rodgers

Yes I want to know about online franchise. They won’t say anything about it.
