Kurt Warner Returning To Madden 10

Late last week I posted a poll regarding the removal of a few players in the final Madden 10 roster update who had retired following the end of their season but before the NFL season was officially over. Kurt Warner, Bertrand Berry, and Junior Seau were completely taken out of the game in the update. The poll and accompanying comments were heavily in favor of keeping players on the rosters given that they finished off the seasons with their respective teams. Lead producer from the Madden series Phil Frazier has sent over the following statement:

Over the last few days we’ve kept an eye on the poll in your story about our final roster update. Due to the overwhelming response, we are going to release another update that adds the retired players previously removed back into the game. Our fans have spoken and we’ll do our best to have this update done before the weekend. We also plan to push this update to Online Franchise shortly after it’s ready.

This is a good move by EA Sports not just in how they are responding directly to community feedback and taking action on it but also just in terms of consistency. There have been more transactions that have taken place and the final update even missed some players such as 49ers LB Jeff Ulbrich who had retired and accepted a position on the Seahawks coaching staff. Then there are players such as Brett Favre who may retire, but because of the timing Vikings fans would have had him in the game for the next six months regardless while Cardinals fans wouldn’t have had their starting QB. Madden 10 was meant to represent the 09-10 season and off-season transactions are meant to be held for the upcoming year.

No with him and Chris Henry thats more of an issue of respecting a person who is deceased. I think its something that was probably debated but ultimately it would be awkward to have deceased players in the game.

Do you mean he wasn't in the free agent pool? Cause he wasn't on a team this last season. He was just signed by the Bengals but that is for the 10-11 season.

No because Madden 10 is about the season. Not the Off-Season and Draft of the 2010 season. It's not fair to take him off

In general I think having a final roster update that projects into next season is a good move (for the consumer) that extends the shelf life of the software itself. BUT if you are going to do that you need to go all the way and add in all the rookies post-draft. And of course this isnt a good idea for EA since it gives people a very good reason not to buy '11.

just logically, you cant take out players leaving without replacing them with the incoming ones. so lets just consider this a failed experiment and back to business as usual. no harm done.

it only makes sense. if favre made up his mind to retire quickly for once, they would have to take him off the game as well….and i dont see that happening. so keep the guys on the game

It would be nice but…
1) New rosters for the new season are a big selling point
2) Licensing wise they would not be allowed to put incoming rookies into the previous year's game.

But that's exactly right. If you're going to take players out after the season, the problem is that they aren't being replaced. Its just opening up a spot that will eventually be taken by someone else.

While a lot people are thanking Pasta (and rightfully so it seems) I think its also fair to thank EA. Sure they made the mistake in the first place but they learned from their mistake and fixed it. That's all we asked for and they delivered so thanks EA.

I know this topic is like beating a dead horse and is now being corrected, but would it be that hard to alter a player's % of retiring after “x” year? It seems like Seau retires from the Pats anyways after one year (due to age?), but would it be that hard to have Warner's tendency tuned down to retire after 1 year? I don't know what y'all think about that, but in for us playing a season, we all know that players retire after a year or so, but what truly controls that? What the hell – EA it's about time you actually listened to your consumers, it's been far too long since we've seen something in writing and action.

I like EA responsiveness. They should continue to interact with Madden message boards and blogs to build up good will.

This is a good move. There were a lot of upset people due to the last update, me being one of them. I would even venture to say that they should even keep those who may not be “re-signed” by their team. Like the article said, “…transactions are meant to be held for the upcoming year.” My thoughts are, not only retirees, but even those who are going free agency should still be with their respective teams for Madden 10, since that's who they played with with all year.

Hey Pasta,

I'm really glad that EA will be adding the “retired” players back to the roster. Considering the NEW “Final” update that will add those players back in, will the ratings be updated for the two Super Bowl teams as well? I think that would be an excellent idea.

In my opinion, a “Final” update should happen after the very last game, the Super Bowl.

Online is a joke. All these dudes claim to be sim but want all of this fantasy nonsense. Warner is no longer in NFL and should not be in game. Play for money or waste your time with 10 year olds that pull the plug when losing, ask for players that are not in league to be put in game all to fulfill there fantasies, all why claiming to be sim. There are no sim players online. It should not surprise anyone that EA makes nothing but arcade games and continue to get away with it.

Yeah, well what if he decided to pull a Favre and change his mind? The point is, Madden 10 should reflect the 2009-2010 season. If he chooses to retire, well then he should be left out of Madden 11. He shouldn't be removed from the roster on 2010 just because he retires AFTER THE REGULAR SEASON. The guy was one of the top QB's in the league. He should be in the game. PERIOD.

I update my game daily so if someone is traded, cut, picked up or retired i make the changes. It brings excitement to the game so when free agency starts it's like playing a new game.

Yo Pasta, why don't you do something worthwhile since you have the developers ear and get them to put Trade Logic and Salary Caps in for Madden '11 Online Franchise.
