MLB 2K10 Demo Impressions

From the time the demo for MLB 2K10 was released I’ve been keeping notes, some of which I’ve been posting to Twitter along the way. I’ve compiled my thoughts and observations here and will just stream them out. I’ve also included another two HD videos of a demo play through.

Overall based on the demo MLB 2K10 is going to offer a much cleaner and more rewarding experience than previous iterations. There are a number of issues though, some of which won’t be properly evaluated until the complete game is out, that appear to hold it back from being better than just a decent offering. Continue on for my full impressions as well as another set of videos of a demo play through.

First in terms of demo structure it’s a shame that it lacks commentary and doesn’t offer the opportunity to change difficulty level or camera angles. On the plus side though I dig that the starting pitchers and game time are randomized.

The difficulty level is set on Pro and with no way to adjust it that is what I’ll be basing my thoughts on. Overall the game has a fun feel to it but it is incredibly easy. I’m hitting home runs at a rate of about two per every three innings. It definitely scared me that the very first power swing I attempted with the demo I crushed a home run with Chase Utley. After a Ryan Howard ground out I followed up with a Jason Werth home run. And that was when I was just trying to get used to the game. In well over 20 innings I’ve given up something in the neighborhood of six hits and still not a single run. If the $1 million challenge were to be held on these settings there would be perfect games thrown on release day.

In terms of controls I like what has been done for both pitching and hitting. I’ve never been a fan of the stick being used in MLB 2K but I’m finding them to be enjoyable for the first time. While at the plate it has a more instinctive feel, although you do usually have to determine whether to swing big or go for contact beforehand. The defensive swing I don’t anticipate coming into play naturally and I’ll probably never use it because of that. When pitching I like the ability to choose the pitch type beforehand and then just concentrate on the motion. I’m having much more success delivering properly because of this.

Facing the AI is much more rewarding both while pitching and while hitting. The CPU isn’t swinging at everything and CPU pitchers will even give up walks of which I’ve gotten a handful. I don’t mind the Batter’s Eye too much but what does bother me is how random it is. One pitch it’ll flash and another it won’t and I’ve yet to see any discernible pattern to it. I use the location aspect of it more than to identify what type of pitch is on the way as that really hasn’t offered much of an advantage. For me I tend to swing more often because I see it come up rather than just try to hit naturally.

Fielding though seems to be a weakness as the CPU basically is in control leaving the User to just make the throws. Most of the action in the infield is so fast that there is no time to react. Even on hits to the outfield the players are usually well on their way before the User has a chance to take over.

Graphically I like the overall brighter look and the stadium ambiance is more true to life. There are some jaggies and player faces particularly are disappointing. Without the commentary the atmosphere doesn’t feel up to par making the listless crowd stand out more than it probably would otherwise. Obviously the most glaring visual issue is with the jersey numbers which are far too large.

One concern I had going in was how slow the pitches seemed to be coming to the plate in the video that was out. I actually think the speed to the plate feels about right. The issue I have here is that there is little difference between an off-speed pitch and a fastball. I’ve basically been going up with the strategy of looking for location and not caring about pitch type and that has led to the success I’ve had hitting. The window is simply too large on this difficulty setting.

An issue with the new batting camera is that the hitters are so proportionally large that they get obscured by the scorebar and the bat even goes off the top of the screen. Initially I noticed it with Jason Werth and thought it was just because of his height. But then when I used the Yankees it had Derek Jeter positioned even worse. It is somewhat distracting and I’m surprised that a visual flaw like that would be overlooked. Otherwise the new view does provide a better opportunity to judge strikes from balls which will probably be more beneficial once the difficulty level is moved up as it doesn’t feel necessary here.

  • The text above the pitch types is just too small. I have a 56″ HDTV and in sitting just about six feet away I’m having to lean in and/or squint to figure out which pitch to select.
  • I’ve only hit one double which is concerning. However that double was pretty damn cool as it went over the outfielder’s head and off the wall. Otherwise hits to the outfield seem to hang in the air more often than not and the outfielders are snagging those easily.
  • I had my runner get doubled-off at first base on a lazy pop-up to the second baseman. There is no way he should’ve been standing halfway to second base and not retreat until after the catch was made. Come to think of it maybe the infield fly rule should have been called.
  • Ryan Howard made an impossible play catching a line drive with two hands over his head with his back turned to the plate and looking towards the right field wall. I shook my head at that. I haven’t seen any other plays along those lines made thankfully.
  • I like that I’m fouling off pitches at a decent rate. This is great because it doesn’t have to do with the defensive swing and usually I get a feel for how my timing was off when it results in a foul ball.
  • Framerate seems consistent which is great but with so many elements removed for the demo we’ll have to see if it stays that way.
  • Player movement is awkward. Lots of starting and stopping (see example when heading to dugout after home run). Not as bad as last year though.
  • Not a big deal but the pitching cursor is really unsteady and jumpy. It doesn’t move around smooth making it frustrating at times to try and get the location you want to throw for.
  • Seeing occasional AI issues such as players not completing their assignments (such as the pitcher not covering first base in the video I posted last night), throwing to the wrong base, diving when not necessary, ect. That being said I’ve yet to get upset about something to the extent that I’d turn the game off because of it, which happened about once every other inning with 2K9.

What bothers me about most of the gripes I have is that they could have been fixed or adjusted based on a simple feedback session. Visual issues (small text, score overlay on top of players, over-sized jersey numbers) all could have been spotted within minutes with easy fixes being made but now the game will be stuck with them all year. Some of the other things cited in these impressions could very well be improved on a higher difficulty level but that remains to be seen. Clearly though if judging the MLB 2K10 demo primarily based on how it compares to 2K9 there is reason for optimism.

  • Anvil

Thanks for this. I think youre right about this being a better game that should at least be fun. But the graphics and AI probs are too much for me. I wish we had gameplay videos from the full version of the game but 5 days away and just a single inning? That tells me this is probably a good sample of what it will be like.

  • Lord-Grim

i gave it a chance. just not up to par with what i expect a game to be for $60. i wont get taken yet another year.

  • danny

agree on liking the changes to the controls. less glitches for sure just from the demo but the 2k9 demo didnt show most anyway. hate the new batting camera, hate the jerseys, jaggies on the mound looks like there are steps going up both sides, infielders throwing to the wrong bases and not just when its the cpu, and power swing makes the home runs come too often.

  • Lake Allen

Thats basically how I feel too. Put next to 2K9 it looks like 2K10 will be a good game. Put next to The Show it will be vastly inferior. Im happy that 360 only people will get at least a solid game. But that is where the difference lies in how people are seeing this demo. If not comparing to The Show its a lot easier to live with it and have fun with it.

  • http://twitter.com/Dascenzo Brian Dascenzo

Infield fly rule only applies when there are two runners on base.

I played the demo once and deleted it. Thankfully I have an option.

  • Timmy458

I haven't downloaded the demo yet since I haven't had time, but I think the reason why there isn't any commentary in the demo is because of memory restrictions that is what I heard atleast.

  • mattcolby

Pasta, how dare you give a detailed, thoughtful, well written impression of the 2K demo! You are obviously paid by EA to hate everything that is 2K. I think I spotted you on the grassy knoll too. And I know you were the one filming the alien autopsy at area 51. How dare you!

Joking aside, thanks for giving your honest opinion on the demo. I'm sure there are a lot of people that appreciate the info. I have to say, I tried the demo too just for giggles and it really wasn't that bad. Defintely a step up from last year's. But thank God I get to play the Show. Hopefully that demo will come out tomorrow as expected so you can collect your million dollar paycheck from Sony for writing your obviously biased opinion on that one. Did you ever get your check for rigging the Florida presidential elections too?

    Peace

  • kris

im surprised to see youre actually encouraged by this demo pasta. other than not being completely terrible there isnt anything that stands out as above being mediocre.

  • TTO-OTT

What this demo did for me is think that in another year if they actually put effort in that MLB 2K11 could be really good.

  • Nos

wow @ how the score overlay is going over the players. design wise that is a huge error.

  • TTO

Ive noticed that any pitch that comes in near the edge of the strikezone even if its barely touching the edge is called a strike. No variation at all. Like the only balls thrown are obvious way outside the zone ones.

  • FaceOff

  • Amen Ra

    Who cares mayne.

You saying the game sucks because of the infield fly rule? So did the Show suck last year because half the time you couldn't hire a new manager due to the game glitching and not allowing you to fire someone?

  • Amen Ra

    Yeah that's pretty weak.

  • Jeff

It's been confirmed that there will be several batting camera options and settings (it was one good thing 2K9 had last year too), so we'll be able to tweak the camera ourselves so the score overlay doesn't overlapp the players.

  • http://twitter.com/DaveDQ David D.

We know that the ability to adjust the camera is in this game. I don't see the need to dwell on the “issue” that the player's head runs underneath the score ticker. What exactly does that do to the game that's a negative?

Other things like the field appearing to be jagged at times and the shadows being choppy is an obvious negative and something I doubt 2K will have fixed for retail. Many of the fielding issues (user) can be solved by using the pre-load throw feature.

Overall, I feel the demo does a good job of showing the improvements but does leave some desire for better things like less of the robotic feel outside of gameplay and after plays are made. At times, the players look like squirrels crossing the road.

  • skihawks

Looks like SCEA is passing up on The Show demo. I hope they don't release one. Although I have the option to download it and play it if released, I would rather wait until launch…

  • airlyle

to clarify even more, the infield fly rule only applies if there are at least 3 possible force outs. For example runners on 1st and 2nd- infield fly will be enforced, runners on 1st and 3rd- infield fly not enforced.

  • http://pastapadre.com/ pastapadre

Yeah its a different set of circumstances involved there. But it still makes me uneasy that they haven't released it, and still haven't stated if it will be out tomorrow or not.

  • 404

lack of attention to detail kills this series. its the biggest difference between the development team for 2k and that for the show. like you said pasta those visual things should have been spotted by them if not just having a few fans in to offer feedback and they could have been told. very simple.

  • sroeland

Another thing…2K blames the MLB Style Guide as to why the numbers are so large. They claimed they were following the guide and the result was the bigger-than-normal numerals that you can see in the demo. But why then weren't the numbers that large last year or in any other baseball game?

Whenever there is an issue with an MLB 2K baseball game, they always find interesting ways to pass the blame or make excuses. While the gameplay seems vastly improved in the demo, certain things at 2K haven't changed.

  • sroeland

Interestingly enough, a lot of Best Buys have the full retail game playable at their stores right now. There is an impression thread over at OS just for folks who have tinkered with the game at BB.

  • Yup

I agree. It's the strung along thing I'm not liking, because Ramone Russel said to expect the demo around the same time as last year, which is BS. Last year, the MLB 09 Demo came out on Feb. 5th. So yea, I was strung along big time and still am.. cause I still haven't heard shit about it being released tomorrow..

  • Mike

That sucks. I'm gonna be blunt. That's a problem. Variable strike zones should be basic in MLB video games by now.

  • rob

Do you think they started out with: hey let's make really big numbers. Of course not. Of course they followed some guide and now it's too late to fix. Is it a groundbreaking issue? Maybe to graphics whores like yourself that only buy a game for graphics. You might as well go to a real game to get graphics. At least they are life-like, well, maybe not to some.

  • sroeland

So you're telling me that no one thought at some point in the development process: “Hey, the numbers look kinda big on the jerseys. Maybe we should check with the MLB and make sure these are correct”? They look strange, no matter how much stock you put on graphics in games.

It takes away from the “sim” aspect of the game. You want to replicate the authenticity in a sim game, correct? Not take away from it. Huge numbers take away from the realistic aspect. They are distracting.

I usually could care less about graphics. However, when the look of a game takes away from its intent (for 2K10, being a sim baseball game) it comes across as lazy.

Madden had the same issue a few years back with the names on the back of the jerseys. All of the unis had the same bland lettering. It was something that took a little away from the sim aspect. Yet, NFL 2K5 had authentic lettering. EA looked lazy in that respect.

  • Bighousefan

I'm just pissed because I don't have a “gold” account, I can't download the damn thing.

  • slimcranky

Create a new account, gold is free for one month

  • SportsFanBran321

They really need the 2k8 graphics back and change the running style.

  • SportsFanBran321

By the way you could change your manager.

  • BustyBuffet

Yeah, I would buy this game for $35 at the most. Maybe eBay in May or June.

  • SportsFanBran321

It just pisses me off that 2k10 doesn't deliver the goods. They need to bring back the 2k8 graphics and change the running style

  • RonJustice

wow. the one thing 2k baseball has always gotten right, is the insane amount of batter info that they display during an AB…MLB THE SHOW has that irritating red, grey, or blue arrow…I hope they got rid of that this year…

  • The Albatross

If you're waiting for an MLB The Show demo, go pick up Heavy Rain … the game is incredible.

  • batchmaker

    Pasta -

Is the pitching motion still the same as last year? It looks as if this is the case. I have a PS3 and am dying to get my hands on either game damn it! Even if its just a demo.

  • bighhousefan

    thanks Slimcranky!

  • Sidewinder57

The fact that it's a better game at least offers some hope for the future. The last baseball game I bought was 2K7 so it should be a substantially better experience for me compared to that.

As a 360 owner, I look at The Show and I get the feeling that I'd be buying a Toyota while Cadillacs across the street are selling for the same price. As long as all the pedals work though, I think I'll enjoy it.

  • 22cowboys22

you guys nitpick to much.ive played the demo about 13 times i love it,its gonna be a great game this year all you complainers out there stop your whinning and go get a ps3 and buy mlb the show and stop ripping on 2k about mlb2k10.Remember this is there first full year of development on the game and the developers of mlb the show have been making it for years now so with that being said mlb the show should be better DUHHH.But i think the show sucks because of its overall presentation just isnt up to par with the graphics therefore in my opinion it makes the game boring.

  • Blah

You said, ” but i think the show sucks because of its overall presentation just isnt up to par with the graphics therefore in my opinion it makes the game boring. “

Tell yourself whatever you gotta tell yourself to make MLB 2K acceptable. You're still kiddin' yourself though.

  • 22cowboys22

nope, mlb the show still has the same graphical overlays from 2 years ago,i just watched a 9 min trailer of gameplay i couldnt tell the difference from last years game and this one.

  • 22cowboys22

if possible blah, put the mlb the show on one screen and put mlb2k10 on one screen now forget graphics cause your blind if anyone thinks mlb2k10 looks better than the show cause it doesnt. Then just let the 2 games play and pay attention to everything else i bet youll say that mlb2k10 overall presentaion represents what you see on tv better than mlb the show10.

    • sandul

you do know that the show is completely copying tv presentation this year with real time game play, no more instanced video clips? that will make the game way more fluid. even the home runs you watch the guy run all the way around this year instead of him just showing up at home. Research before you speak.

      • handful

Do you really believe the show is that much better, or do most of you guys just go off of what pasta says and thats final. I too own a ps3 but I don’t go around bashing 2k fans about the show being that much better cause I’m sure(hope) most people will go and buy wichever game they like anyways. I personally enjoyed the demo, and wouldn’t care who didn’t like it. I’m sure most of you on here have both systems so why bash, cause if you were like me, you’d just get a gamefly account and play them both. I play both 2k and the show and honestly I play 2k more, get mad all you want.

        • sandul

I only have a ps3, my xbox died a long time ago. I do honestly believe that the show is better, but i don’t mean to bash people who like the 2k game, but I bash them if they get their facts wrong. I played 2k6 and 2k7 when i had my xbox, but i only kinda liked them, but i only played them a little bit. But the first time i played the show on my PS3 i knew i had struck gold, and each game has gotten better in my opinion.

They both have good things and bad things. but the good things in the show outweigh the good things in 2k in my opinion. the main reason is because the show has always had the road to the show, which is what i play 90% of the time. the 2k series only just now added it, and it is highly doubtful that it’s as well tuned as the sony game is at the moment since it’s their first rendition of their version.

I don’t have gamefly, i just buy games i know i like. i don’t play a game if it only “kinda” interests me. if i know i won’t beat the game, i won’t get it.

the only reason i bash bob is because he bashes the show fans. most of us think he’s a show fan and only bashes it because he’s bored.

  • sandul

    hell yeah that game rocks.

  • sandul

their graphical interface hasn't been an issue. they changed the HUD's appearance, made it more sleek and stylish. and you're blind if you can't tell the gameplay difference between the new show and last year's because the presentation is completely different.

  • false

i just want you to know its only because of all the people shitting on his site. he still despises 2k hes just trying to please the masses

  • hawkster3269

If you have a PS3 you should no doubt go with The Show. If you have a system with both games on it why would you play the inferior one when they are the same price.

    • Janky Promoter

I have a ps3 but I’m still buying 2k10, I already own the show 09 and 10 looks no different so why waste the money. Peace!

The Show is stale and pitching in that game is a snoozefest. I wish 2K would get it together and make a solid game to give us a choice.

I’m sooo glad that this demo came out….

because not BOB isn’t on this site anymore (for now). i hope he just keeps playing the demo over and over again until the game comes out, and he just never talks again…

didn’t he say he only had a ps3 though? that would mean that he can’t be playing the demo.. unless he’s at a friend’s house… but who’d be friends with bob? j/k i’m sure he’s fine when he’s not talking about baseball games.

  • Dave

sroeland u hit it the nail on the head the game is not lost because of the big lettering on the jerseys. however i disagree with u about 2k's graphics and gameplay and even the features. the reason for this is because if u look back on 2k9 the graphics were ok but 2k8 was terrible. i think this year 2k10 is gonna give the show a run for its money

  • Anonymous

one thing i don’t like though, other than those ridiculously ugly jersey numbers, is that the scoreboard shows their career stats instead of their season stats, i think though that is more of an opinion rather than an actual problem though, but i think they can be decent this year. i just hope for 360 users that they release a patch for the numbers because that is just ugly. i’m glad The Show doesn’t have ugly jersey numbers….
