No Pre-Release Demo For MLB 10: The Show

Though it hasn’t been stated explicitly all signs point to the demo for MLB 10: The Show being absent from the PSN update today. SCEA has remained notably silent about the demo while the Playstation Blog today posted an article on the game advertising the opportunity to play the game at select Best Buy locations. (Update) Can now confirm there will be no downloadable pre-release demo.

Now, if this wasn’t The Show, I would be a lot more concerned. For the most part everyone knows what to expect with this game based on track record and a good flow of information. However the very reason why many remain comfortable with this release might be why a demo has been held back and why review copies haven’t gone out.

None of the improvements or additions this year are going to blow people away. The core of the game remains the same for the most part and will have a very familiar feeling. That isn’t to say it is a bad thing, it’s actually one of the reasons why the series has been so successful. However for the casual fans who play the demo they may not pick up on the nuances, while many of the additions wouldn’t be reflected in a demo anyway. Reviews may remain flat compared to last year as well for the same reasoning. New additions include All-Star features and a catcher mode in Road to the Show. Those things though are unlikely to inspire passion in reviewers.

The decision to hold off on a demo could also be related to the Best Buy promotion with a possible deal for exclusivity being reached. Best Buy certainly benefits more if they can have the game available at kiosks as the only way to play it pre-release. What would be most aggravating about this is the deal would have been struck a while back and after that point there would have been no plan to release the demo.

Otherwise I don’t see any reason why a demo should have been avoided and I especially am disappointed in how everyone has been strung along as they had suggested a demo was on the way and then avoided discussing the topic. The only way the situation makes sense is that SCEA is concerned with protecting sales rather than boosting them.

It makes me wonder what people did before demos were downloadable, and it really was up to the dev to even bother releasing public demos. They game comes out Tuesday, if you don’t want to buy it because there’s no demo, you can easily rent it and try it out. It’s going to be a great game, you know it, I know it, there’s no reason to freak out.

no i totally get it…but if youve ever had a job before, you may notice sometimes whats a priority on monday isnt a priority on tuesday. meaning that they may have had every intent to make a demo, but just had better things to do so it kept getting bumped for other priorities. they never gave a date because it was just a “we will get to it if we can” situation.

again, in the greater scheme of things….not a big deal.

It doesn’t matter. I will wait to see if the online play has been improved. You can’t have lag during the interaction with the pitcher and hitter. If this has not been improved, I might as well save my 60 bucks and plays last year’s version.

UPDATE..just played the game!….i went to bestbuy to see if this was true that you can play the game there..YOU CAN….it’s not a demo either….i didn’t have a lot of time with it because there were others waiting in line but from what i played i didn’t see much different from last year….which IMO is a good thing..i did think they improved the graphics just a touch and the players moved much better..my outfielders just ran to the ball more natural..overall i was very impressed and can’t wait to buy it…i just wish i had a little more time with it but didn’t want to be greedy and hog it.

We have been strung along. The Sony reps use the web to plug the game pre-release but won’t talk about anything negative or answer any real questions. They use the forums well to provide hype but people shouldn’t expect much after release. Very disappointed in no demo before release. I won’t buy it at release now. I will be giving both MLB demos a shot first.

I think that’s something that would be judged on the product being offered at the time. If SCEA was to get complacent I think they’d get pressed on that. This is (potentially) one of the first signs of that which is why its alarming to me.

I wish both games were available on both systems – so the constant cat fight between system owners would just end already. I hope both games are good but I tell you when Madden became the football king (justified or not) and got complacent things went down hill fast. So competition is best for the consumer don’t forget that!

I just wanted to try and set the record straight. There will be a demo. We just don’t have control over “when it gets posted. The PSN team has their own schedule, etc. and there isn’t much we can do to change the process.

Also, as I understand it, review copies were sent out the same time this year as they were last year.

For all of you conspiracy theorists out there. SCEA is a HUGE company, and the people posting on these blogs are just a very small portion of the company. The developers released a demo to Sony to be released. It is done, and there was no lying or misleading on the developers part.

Obviously the powers that be made a decision to strike up an exclusivity deal with Best Buy and that changed WHEN the demo was released, not IF the demo was released. That’s an entirely different part of the company making this decision. These community managers have no say over what transpires at that point.

Quit acting like they owe you something. This is a FREE demo that they are not oblogated to release whatsoever. If you’re that unsure about whether or not you’re going to buy the game, then wait it out, rent it, go ride your bike to Best Buy or ask your mom to take you, or wait until the demo is released down the line.

My guess is, though, most of the people bitching about it are people that are going to buy it anyway and are just jonzing for their MLB: The Show fix before Tuesday.

I would have liked to have been playing the demo as well. But the only thing they owe us is a good final product, and that’s all we should really care about. Is there anyone out there that actually thinks after looking at all the gameplay vidoes etc…that this is going to be anything short of the greatness that it has been the last couple of years? I think not.

Pasta, this is Jason, producer. We’ve met in person, you know the dev team. This whole write-up is speculation. You have our contact info, please contact us in the future, so you can get your audiece accurate information. There is nothing we are hiding. Best Buy has nothing to do with the release of the demo.

We’ve done a ton for the game this year, just check out any of the 15+ blogs we done this year.

The bottom line is, the process of releasing a demo has changed. There are things out of our control. The demo was done in Mid Feb on our end.

Reviews disc have been sent out already as well.

I hope that what we’ve delivered year after year, would instill a bit more trust us.

We really do appreciate all your interest in the game. We just want to make sure you all get accurate information.

I'm sure you a pretty cool dude man, but you got to stop this Show love fest. I admit it's a great game but the updates shown this year are limited and not releasing a demo is weak. There's no way to spin those two facts.

I went and played about 6 innings at my local Best Buy last night, I’ll give some highlights on the new stuff I saw.

1. I hit a foul ball toward the sidelines. Fans were reaching over the wall, trying to grab the ball.
2. The crowd noise is insane this year. I got the bases loaded and Pujols came up to bat, the crowd was bezerk. Really cool feeling, and the rumble feedback increased as the pitcher/batter battle went on. I ended up hitting a long fly ball to right. The crowd was going nuts thinking it was a goner, but it was caught on the warning track and you heard a big “oohhhh” from the crowd.
3. There are a ton of new animations when fouling off pitches. I had the RTP (real time) on, and I fouled a ball off my shin. The umpire walked out to the pitcher to give me some time to recoup.
4. The stadium detail is astounding. You just have to see it in motion.
5. The day to dusk transition is incredible to see. The shadows slowly creep over the mound, and you can tell by the clock (real time clocks during the game).
6. There’s a tracker that appears at the top of the screen to rule outs/errors/assists. I had a sharp grounder hit at my 2B, and he went for the ball and ended up kicking it with his foot. The ball physics are improved by a ton.

yes, no demo is weak, but i think that the updates are not that limited. all sorts of RTTS updates (including new catcher mode), presentation updates, finally the HR derby, blah blah.

I'm a fanboy sure, but i've played both games. There's no way to spin the fact that they didn't do the demo in time, that's just poor preparation, especially since i start looking for information on the game in december!

Are you a 2k fan or the show fan, i don't think i've seen you pick a side. and yes there are sides because they are 2 completely different feeling games, each game has its fans.

They are reporting over at Operation Sports that SCEA has already submitted the demo and the problem is that Sony hasn’t passed it through certification yet. Some of the SCEA guys have hopped on the thread and said some things about this. Basically, the powers that be at Sony are slacking. I find it kind of weird that Sony is to blame for a Sony company not getting their demo out..but whatever. I have 100% faith that the game will be great. A demo would be nothing but a bonus for me. I don’t need it to convince me to buy the game.

At least mlb2k had their fans best interest in mind by releasing their demo. Why not release the demo? Have u gone and messed somrthing up concerning development? The show isnt perfect by the way but its a great simulation I wasnt going to buy 2k but now i will because I value their integrity. My 11 YEAR OLD daughter actually can beat the computer in demo mode so i will let her play for the million dollars shes better than me at the moment on the 2k DEMO. Thanks 2k for releasing a demo.
