Potential Epic Meltdown Nearing For The Show’s Release (Updated)

A huge problem with what appears to be related to the internal clock took down many PS3′s on Sunday evening. The situation is approaching where the games to be released on Tuesday, including MLB 10: The Show, could be unplayable for a large number of gamers. The issue at hand prevents the console from connecting to PSN and keeps games that support trophies from being played even offline.

The slim PS3 models appear to be in the clear but the most of the original models are afflicted with the problem. One popular theory is that the PS3 could flip over to a real date of March 1st, after believing today is the non-existent February 29th, at 7et/4pt tonight. In that scenario the consoles may start working again.

If it doesn’t happen on its own in that manner Sony may be pressed to release a firmware update or lead into serious questions as to whether the consoles will be fixable at all and a recall may be in order. Reports are that even developer debug kits are out of commission which could end up in delays and other complications for projects in the works should the issue linger. All told this situation has the potential of being absolutely disastrous.

MLB 09: The Show is completely disabled and MLB 10 would likely face the same result when attempting to play. Sony has stated they are working on the problem though citing no specifics and there is no guarantee that anything will be resolved in time for when The Show makes it out to consumers in under 24 hours.

This also would do major damage to MLB 2K10′s $1 million contest for throwing a perfect game. PS3 users who had planned to buy for that reason could pass on it knowing that the feat may be achieved by a 360 user before even being able to fire up their copy or connect online (a requirement in order to qualify).

So, for those of you who have been eagerly awaiting MLB 10: The Show, what are you going to do if your PS3 is inoperable? Wait it out? Buy a slim PS3? Get MLB 2K10 for the Xbox 360? Leave your thoughts in the comments!

(Update) Sony has released a statement that they “hope to have it fixed within the next 24 hours.” So that is either a sign that they plan on delivering a fix or they are waiting for the date to flip and then claim that they have resolved it. Even still *hope* is not exactly the most comforting thing to hear.

(Update #2) As many had hoped for the time has passed and it appears that the PS3s in question are now working again. Major crisis may have been averted. It’s a fluid situation still but hopefully it will mean everything is good going forward.

Sony has issued a statement that if you have not turned on your ps3 LEAVE IT OFF TIL THE PROBLEM IS FIXED!! if not your ps3 is fd!!

You people are idiots. I agree the shit sucks but the issue will get fixed.

My french original PS3 version hadn’t trouble !!!

mine been woking fine and its a fatty. played mlb 09 rtts this morning. date says 3/1

  • Anonymous

Sony said don’t use your PS3…According to the Twitter.

  • Zane

As you mentioned in the update, I would suggest NOT turning on your system until Sony gives the official word.

    • mattcolby

I don’t think turning it on will cause any problems. From what I’ve read they are just saying not to play anything because the trophies and game saves might get messed up. Turning it on just to check and see if you are one of the “infected” is okay I’m sure. At least from what I’ve read.

      • Zane

        Thanks for the info.

  • mattcolby

Sony never said to “Not turn on your PS3″. That was just how the guy at IGN translated their statement. They do say to “not use it” i.e play games, sync trophies etc…because your trophies and game saves might get corrupted.

Simply turning it on doesn't do anything. How would someone ever turn it on to get the update? It's not like it's a virus. Your system either thinks it's the wrong day or it doesn't. Whether it's on or not doesn't make a difference. Just don't play any games on it. You can check to see if the date is messed up. There are some people with “fat” PS3s who aren't even having issues.

  • NELSON HAHA

lmao!!!! i love how you fanboys are on edge.

    • Anonymous

      People are on edge because:

      a) an expensive piece of gaming equipment has been rendered essentially useless thanks to no fault of their own

      b) it’s the eve of one of the bigger sporting game releases of the year (MLB games are out tomorrow)

      c) it’s the eve of the release of Battlefield: Bad Company 2, one of the more anticipated games of the whole year.

People kinda have a right to be on edge. But overreacting isn’t gonna help either. A fix will come, whether it’s thanks to Sony or due to waiting out the clock thing and having the date correct itself.

  • t. daley

Actually my fat ps3 crapped out a few months ago and I had to buy the slim. I guess there's a silver lining in everything. Anyways, Most of you guys are way over reacting to this. Your behavior is much like the fools who thought the world would come to an end b/c of the year 2000.

I am sure there will be a simple enough fix to correct the problem and I am sure you wont need to send in your console but even if you do your claiming to stop playing PS3 is rediculous. It didnt happen with xbox and it wont happen here either. Gamers game period.

  • tim daley

Do you honestly think the brilliant minds it took to design this hardware can't figure out this problem?????? Really????

DRAMA QUEENS, THE WHOLE LOT OF YOU. PASTA LOVE THIS CRAP. HE LOVES STOKING THE FIRES OF THE BASEMENT DWELLING, HOT POCKET EATING, NEVER KISSED A GIRL, VIRGINAL, LOW LIFE GAMERS.

WARNING – Disconnect your PS3 from your TV until tomorrow morning at 7AM.. this can ruin the settings of any HD compatible TV and therefore in turn.. send your living room into a black hole…. think Bermuda Triangle if you try to play Madden.

      LMFAO Exactly!!!

  • t. daley

NO!, The real problem is YOU getting all these fools riled up over some petty BS. You love overstating a situation to fuel your blog. Great for you but you essentially get most of your readers, those without common sense, riled up over nothing.

You act as if this problem is the doom of the PS3. One way or another this will be fixed and rather quickly I might add. I know you love this melodramatic BS pasta, largely b/c you have nothing else to write about til Madden.

Having said that you should be ashamed of yourself taking advantage of the weak and feeble minded kiddies that flood this blog. LOL

  • t. daley

OK, you dont believe gamestop to know anything but you hang on every word of a blogger named Pasta Padre. All Pasta does is compile information he gathers from other sites and consolidates in the form of HIS OWN PERSONAL BLOG.

I think a Major National Video Game Retailer would have better information than a No Name Blogger, don't you?

Another way for Sony to get people to go out and purchase a Slim….Dammit!!!!

It’s not limited to just The Show. You are talking about PS3′s turning into bricks. No game can be played. Not to mention Battlefield 2 is releasing tomorrow as well….

  • sarge

i just moved across the country so my ps3 has been off since january. is it possible it wont be affected

  • t. daley

You act as if when you go into a gamestop you are talking to the owner. You are talking to an employee who 99.9% of the time are gamers themselves who couldn't give less of a f@#$ whether you buy a game or not.

So if one of them has some scoop on the situation you can probably be safe in assuming it came from a reliable source. Oh btw Gamestop is corporate owned and not a licensed franchise so you can bet the information definitely came from a reliable source.

  • KJ

Why has Sony not been working on this fucking problem they new about it!

  • Anonymous

What concerns me is that Sony stated (found on IGN.com) that people who don’t have a Slim shouldn’t turn their system on. I have no idea why or what this means OR what the end result could be if you do…

    • http://pastapadre.com/ pastapadre

I think its just to avoid people unknowingly deleting their save files or corrupting them in the first place. Most people are not very smart about hardware. They’ll see something is wrong then start messing around with their system. Or its just to simplify it on their end. So they don’t have to explain people what they can and cant do with it until its fixed.

  • Anonymous

I’ve been one who has been afraid to turn on my ps3 for fear of this happening, but i turned it on and it appears to be fine. It says march first, trophy’s sync fine, and online game play works. Thank god with less than 12 hours till drop time I’m not sure what i would do. :)

Some of you fools need to stop crying. Instead of gaming today get yo fat asses outside and enjoy life. The shit will be fixed by tomorrow. DAMN!!!!

its nothing major. obviously since people who took the battery out of the ps3 and replaced it back in have no more issues.

    • mattcolby

Yeah, and welcome to voiding your warranty (if you still have one) if you do open up the PS3 and try and fix it yourself.

People just need to be patient. It will get fixed.

      • John

It’s so easy to take the CMOS battery out / disconnect it for 10 seconds and then put it back in / connect it. Most warranties are probably expired anyway by now for the models that are affected.

Just read an updated article on IGN.com. Sony has stated that no one with an older model of the PS3 should turn it on until they have a fix. If you have trophies, although there is no official word if they will be lost, according to the article it doesn’t look good.

    Here is the article:

    http://ps3.ign.com/articles/107/1073007p1.html

I am not feeling too comfortable with the fact the owners of older PS3′s will be able to play them any time soon unless you want to lose stuff….

  • Funkymunky

I have a 1 year old 80 gig, and it seems to be running fine. No time issues, no problems with 09 TS.
I really fell for the guys stricken with this bullshit. If you were here, I’d let ya game with me.
I pray Sony can get to you all before tomorrow. Hang in there.

Some other sites have dug a little deeper in this issue. It sounds like most newer fat PS3s are working fine – for example, ones with the Model No. CECHL01 or CECHL04.

PS3s that are older than those (made before Oct. 2008, I believe) are the ones with the majority of the problems. But even some of those are working, I guess.

Also, folks on Operation Sports who got MLB 10 early say they can play offline just fine for now, even on those systems affected by the time issue. But this could change if the issue isn’t resolved and the trophies are supposed to get linked tomorrow.

This is from Sony’s site. Pretty much the same info from IGN but a little more detailed. I will wait this out. It will suck if I cannot play The Show or Battlefield 2 tomorrow…But I will survive…

Wow this is huge. was really looking for to playing the show as i am dying to play a baseball game if the sony does not work as of tommorow i may be forced to buy MLB2K10 for the 360, but to be honest i was already considering buying 2K10 but if i cant play my ps3 i may have no other choice but of course i will get the show also and play 2k10 till the ps3 is up and running.

Sony, you bunch of useless Tits, fix the fucking problem If i can’t play the show in 12hrs theres going to be hell to pay

  • Angry Guy

Son of a bitch. I wish i would have knew this last night. I couldn’t get anything to work so i did what i did last time i had this problem, restored the system, deleting everything i had saved. I tried getting it to work last night for at least an hour. NHL 10 still worked, just couldn’t get online. Could i have done any real damage to the system?? Why would i unplug the system from my hd tv, could it really damage the tv???

PASTA: Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you don’t have a flair for the dramatic. You are unequivicably, the premier drama queen of our time. We are talking about Video games here. You are being more dramatic about a game console then we were here in Hawaii with the impending doom of a Tsunami on Saturday. Bottom line is that it will be fixed and we will be playing again. If your life is that sad that you worry about the state of a console game then you need to seek help NOW!!!!!!! Seriously Pasta, you need to tone down your commentary. You make all this sound as if it were on the same plain as the disasters in Haiti and Chile’. As far as 2kfanboys go. Whats to worry. By now they are used to the fact that everything they try to play will not work right on day 1 and the promise of a fix is always destined to be months away. LOL :D

You, sir, are an idiot. This is a gaming website, not a news website, so no one is comparing those tragedies to something like this. MLB 10: The Show just so happens to be one of the most anticipated sports games every year and it is pretty crazy that this is happening right before its release.

Not to mention that PS3s across the world stopped working right all the sudden. That’s pretty big news IN THE GAMING WORLD…which this is a gaming website.

Take a look across the internet. All sorts of news outlets are reporting the failure so it is a pretty big deal.

Now I agree that the issue will be fixed eventually (hopefully sooner than later) but for now there are a lot of pissed off gamers (some took the day off tomorrow) who want to play tomorrow’s new releases. And if they choose to come to a GAMING WEBSITE to vent about it, then so be it.

And Pasta would be crazy not to report on it, because it is a huge issue. I’m sure if he didn’t there would be people crying foul saying he’s a PS3 fanboy wanting to hide the issue.

      Anyways…peace out

We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

As mentioned above, please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologize for any inconvenience caused.

Its funny how when you put things into perspective you realize how irrational people truly are. Lets take 2 groups of people and compare. On one hand we have PS3 owner who is up in arms over a simple computer glitch, something that frequently happens to all computers. All computers get bugs and they all get fixed. On the other hand we have 2kfanboy who repeatedly buys the same broken games year after year and then apologizes for the company who releases it. Truly irrational behaviors on both parts.

If you read Sony’s comments in their official blog they simply let the consumber base they are :
    1) aware the problem exists
    2) have identified the problem
    3) are working on the fix
    4) appologize for the inconvenience.
What more do you expect from a company. Hell with 2k you don’t get anything but the following:
    1) We are aware of the problem
    2) We are trying to figure it out
    3) Who knows when it will be fixed
    4) Just do this in the mean time to work around it.

This has been an awful week for Sony. Intentionally screwing with consumers with the demo problems, and now cocking the whole machine up. And the so called system seller in The Show hasn’t changed at all. It’s MLB 09 with a new camera and an ironed out bug on the ball. Not good enough.

We can’t even play offline. What a joke.

Not to mention the game Heavy Rain has become unplayable for a lot of people too (myself included). Game just started not being able to access game saves (happened before clock issue) and if you do a search there are a lot of people having the same issue.

Back week for Sony altogether. Hopefully The Show will save the day!
