Your Early Thoughts on MLB 10: The Show

Posted March 2nd, 2010 at 9:05 am

With MLB 10: The Show now out here is an opportunity to post some thoughts on the game. There are still no reviews published which is somewhat surprising especially combined with the lack of a demo but for the most part there remains strong consumer confidence in the product. I’ll be spending time with the game over the next few days posting videos, impressions, and especially focusing on the online play performance. You can follow me on Twitter where I’ll be noting some things as I go through the process before pulling everything together. So feel free to drop any impressions or observations on MLB 10: The Show in the comments!

When your top complaint is contracts not being realistic enough, I'd say you have a damn good game. That's all secondary stuff, for franchise and whatnot. Based on purely a reflection of baseball gameplay-wise, it's heaven.

its true that there isnt alot of changes…but is that really a bad thing? why change the core gameplay when its already really good..i do like the rtp.i really didnt notice any changes gameplay wise…all i really noticed was more a polished baseball game, and thats all the game really needs..from what i hear 2k is still hampered with glitches, and if the show fans are fanboys, what does that make u 2k morons coming on to a mlb the show post..what it comes down to though the 2k supporters are just trolling on here to get attention..dont give it to them..just enjoy your game whether your a 2k fan or a show fan

You must have me confused, I have never blatantly defended any game and denied it's flaws or shortcomings. Stop trying to take up for your boyfriend, that shit is gay and even more so on the internet.

    T. Daley,

Thank you for reiterating what I had already reiterated at the bottom of my post… This is a commentary board and the topic is fitting – “Your Early Thoughts”. I feel very strongly about what I just mentioned and I feel that the Home Run Derby is poorly put together. To put it simply, if you are going to place a mediocre feature in an almost flawless video game, you are doing more harm than good. The reason? It gives “nit-pickers” like myself reason to low blow this great game. A small analogy – A beautiful model can walk a runway and look right on but if she has the wrong ear rings on, it takes away from all else that is GREAT and I think MLB The Show 10 could have put more time in to the HRD feature or not put it in altogether.

And to make myself clear once more, the game is great and there is not much else to comment on as the game is the same as MLB The Show 09 with smoother rendering, more animations, extra fields, Catcher RTTS, and new player stats. At this point in time, Sony is simply building upon an already strong game. The Legos will continue to be stacked on the base of MLB The Show for years to come because they are doing a lot of things right.

Its funny how morons can make the rediculous sound intelligent. If you think a huge step in the right direction is having a game that actually works (ROTFLMAO) then I would agree, but saying that in two years they will displace The Show, is simply moronic. You seem to forget that the Show will also improve and the fact that 2k is now 2years behind the show and an even bigger fact is that the Show is on Bluray which means San Diego Studios has 50GB of space to work with which is over 3x the disc space than what 2k has to work with using standard DVD's. Sorry Chump but you will never see 2k beat the show, EVER! Your other comment pertaining to LIVE is just as moronic and yet contradictory in nature. You are saying that NBA 2k has Live virtually knocked out. Lets look at this. Live, which has dramatically improved over the past 2 years and has received critical acclaim this year is virtually knocked out by the almighty 2k which hasn't changed anything in the past 4 years and a game which this year was broken out of the box. You contradict yourself in thinking live is down and out yet you think MLB2k will have the show on the ropes in 2 years and MLB2k hasn't improved nearly as much as Live has. Basically you are just another Moronic 2kfanboy who doenst have the intelligence to support your own misguided claims. Put down the video games son and go back to school and get the education you obviously squandered away. PEACE!

What about the online I remember playing 09 that it was really laggy and bad has it got any better

White Sox? Classy? This is the same franchise that had a riot on the field after disco demolition night.

An observation I have made concerning sports game fans is that they largely think DIFFERENT=BETTER. That line of thinking couldn’t be further from the truth. Some people will complain about the show because they use the same commentators. Why do we need different commentators? The ones we have are just fine and it is what we are accustomed to. Sure you may like 2k’s commentators better but that is simply personal preference and not a distinction as to which game is better. Same goes for animations. Fanboys will be quick to point out the different animations that each game has over the other but that is just artistic interpretation of the devs and again not a distinction of which game is better. The only true test of which game is better is simple: WHICH GAME OF BASEBALL PLAYS LIKE THE REAL THING.

It is clearly obvious that the SHOW has done the best job at replicating the game of baseball. Set aside all the gimmicks in pitching and batting. The show just feels like real baseball and plays like real baseball.

It’s always good to innovate if possible, but when you have a great base like The Show has, you just build on to that. If next year the Show made a huge change to the game, fans that scream “different” would be happy. BUT WHAT IF THE CHANGE MADE THE GAME WORSE? Everyone would question why they went away from what was just fine (ex. Pitching Meter or Player Models). Gotta look at change from all angles, but I will say The Show could make it’s game even better by giving the user more choice. ADD a analog stick pitching system if you want, but make it optional. Give the user more/different camera angles to play with. And something I think every sports game should do after playing Madden 10; jersey customization. I’d love to mix and match pants with the jerseys and helmets/caps.

I will agree to just that… The Show, even more so than MVP baseball, plays like the real thing. I played college ball and my wife and I play softball on the weekends and this is as close at it gets. Before The Show 10 came out, I was playing a bit of MVP 07 (NCAA) and was excited to see the bar system when making defensive throws. I think MLB The Show should implement a similar system as it feels great.

Aside from the below post I made about the Home Run Derby, I still think that The Show still feels a bit too controlled by fixed animations – i.e. double plays and outfield throws. When I played MVB Baseball, the throws felt like you had total control, and especially when you could hold a throw even after you were in the action of making the throw. I can not tell you how many times runners took advantage of defenders when playing The Show 09 online by taunting a defender, forcing a throw to a bag, and advancing easily. Just a thought.

Post Script: I know, I said “my wife”. She and I play under the name Baseball_Chik so if you see the name online, make sure to ask who you’re playing – hubby or wifey. See ya on the field.

    • Not the only game out

yeah, just set aside the hitting and pitching gimmicks in 2k, and how do you pitch in MLB? press some buttons, something you’ve been doing since MVP? How is that Next gen? How is that skill? lmao. So hitting and pitching mechanics in 2k10 is a gimmick, funny that even those still wrong about the overall game the game deserves still wishes the hitting/batting mechanics of 2k10 was in MLB. If you get the hitting/pitching showdown right, doesnt that make you more authentic

Last year rtts was broken. Kept reseting on sep 15 or nov 15 in one of the first 3 years even after patch. Does anyone else play road to the show? I keep hearing “small improvements over mlb 09″. Well if this game actually works and they fix base running on rtts, then that would be a huge improvement. Oh yeah, did they fix where if you guess correctly on 1/4, can still move your swing location so you dont hit a chopper or popup, instead of taking a strike? That was major BS

Another dilusional 2K10 fan errrrrr….person who only owns a 360 and can’t play The Show so all they can do is knock the game they can’t play. I challenge anyone with a choice to choose 2K10 over The Show. And if you do, I feel sorry for you. There’s nothing wrong with liking both, because the 2K10 demo wasn’t half bad, but there’s just no comparison when you put the two next to each other in gameplay, graphics, features etc..etc..

Good thing I had a choice MattColby. Continue to be awwed by these beautiful graphics the show offers. Too funny. Yes, sir, I will continue to be amazed by these beautiful graphics, thank you very much. Hmmm, isn’t that one of the ways that a game is judged? Thanks for clarifying what we all already know while trying to knock the game.

Oh yeah, and since The Show has the best gameplay too, I guess I’ll add that to the list of things to be amazed by too.

          • r u serious

how does it have the best gameplay, does it play the game by its self. gameplay is in the hands of the gamer, if you play on rookie and I play on allstar, and you come tell me the game is great, I say the game is unrealistic and it cheeses. We are not playing the same game. Gameplay is such a thrown around word, if its baseball, the game has to play like baseball, so i don’t think a baseball game loses the gameplay battle to another baseball game. Now in the mechanics you pitch and hit by pressing a button, 2k uses right analog. while neither replicates actual actions, how simple is button pressing pitching and hitting? how innovative is right analog? considering you can switch to this button old shit on 2k10 but can do right analog on MLB10, doesn’t 2k offer more gameplay options? yes. I knew I should have went to law school. simple minds crumble vs Mines.

this is the typical response, here is fanboy who hasn’t played the show, has only played the new 2k demo, and he’s commenting on putting the two together and the show is just better, HOW? is this with smoke and mirrors? everywhere I go I hear how great it is, but I never see someone playing it saying its great, and I always hear something was broken or glitchy in MLB09, so what is it? How is the show better? it doesnt look better, it doesn’t sound better, it doesn’t have the stat overlays, espn personalities doing the game, stop with this bs. I keep reading opinions from PS3 owner just happy they have an exclusive. and I play ps3 everyday, Im a xbox 360 man myself. The Show so real that it puts you to sleep just like real baseball? Yes….its boring. The Show was boring last year. And after this first month, you will hear the same things. its boring. and more people will play 2k10 anyway. keep ya little niche title.

i reserved mine at gamestop and when i went to pick it up today, they said they didn’t get any codes to unlock the old stadiums. has anyone else had the same problem? also, I’ve noticed where you can buy the stadiums and download them from PSN, but when i try it says please connect to the PSN. and i know that i definitely am connected

    • mattcolby

You need to call them back because they are supposed to have the code for all who reserved the game. If the Gamestop you picked it up doesn’t have it, call another one in town if you have another one in town because they are obviously slacking at that one.

And from what I’ve heard, the download isn’t available yet, even though the code card says it’s supposed to be available at launch. Maybe it will be up later today. This is the first day of release after all.

Just played an online game. I played one inning last year and it was awful and never tried it again. This year it’s at least playable. It’s not perfect and I can see people hating it since it does get a little choppy from time to time but overall when your at bat it’s smooth enough and there is almost no lag when using the pitch meter. It was a ridiculous game, I got killed for 7 innings and it was 7-2 going in the bottom of the 8th but the kid just stopped trying and I scored 7 runs in the inning and won 9-7. I’m hoping the servers are a bit overloaded since it’s release day because their very close from the game I played. To me it’s playable but somewhat frustrating at times just from my one game but if it smooths out just a little bit it’ll be a pretty solid online baseball game. It’s already miles ahead of last year and it seems like their 95% of the way there so maybe just a patch or a little less activity on the servers and this will be a good online experience for a lot of people.

Today I picked up my copy of MLB 10 The Show from Best Buy, and I was really excited. I had a PS2 the last 2 years, and I was supposed to upgrade today to a PS3 Slim. Best Buy was out, and so was about 5 other stores. I am mad I can’t play it.

I have completed a home run derby and part of an exhibition game. The Home Run Derby was excellent. The sound of the ball hitting the bat sounded natural and the camera gave you an excellent perspective of the ball leaving the park. The crowd response was awesome.

In regards to the exhibition game, many subtle presentation tweaks were made. The Real-Time presentation is a sweet alternative. The crowd looks much better this year as well. Seems to be more variety in fan models.

The animations are much improved. I saw my catcher scoop a wild pitch in the dirt and throw a runner out trying to steal second from his knees, which was replayed and commented on.

I am not sure if it is me but the hitting seems to be more forgiving this year. Last year, making solid contact was challenging. It also seems it is easier to pick up the ball out of the pitchers hand allowing you to not swing before the ball is released.

The more I play, the more I see the difference. Anyone who says that this game has added little isn’t playing with their eyes open.

It’s little nuggets like this that make The Show one of the best console games ever made. I cannot wait to get into season mode and see what awaits.

Oh, and off topic, Battlefield 2 is awesome….

I’ve heard some rumblings of issues (go check over at Operation Sports) with the waivers/trades in franchise mode and also a bug with player potential. Not trying to bash the game, but just wanting to remind people it IS a game and isn’t perfect… Still the best baseball sim out there though, but I’d like to see those fixed asap.

My first game with MLB 10 was awesome — a walkoff homer in the 10th inning by Diaz. Braves over Mets, 1-0. Ball physics do seem to be improved quite a bit, along with the extra animations, that make it seem more realistic. The pickoffs are a bit crazy, though. I had two wild ones with Derek Lowe, and I just don’t see that happening.

I had two wild ones with Derek Lowe, and I just don’t see that happening.

Pasta— I am trying to play a season with the Nationals but every time I skip to the regular season, the CPU automatically DFA’s Tyler Clipard (and it wont let me reverse the action as he has 2 days to decide what to do) — is there any way to fix this?

t daley is the biggest douche of them all. Fanboy's like it when Sony slides it's proverbial cock down there thin throats. Isn't that right t daley?

  • tunes522

then you get back to the issue of paying $60 for a tweak…kinda sucks…

  • tunes522

it is a bad thing when you are paying $60 for a couple of $5 changes that couldn't been put out as DLC…

i’ve rented both baseball games. though the show looks better, i just find it boring and strikeouts are difficult for me to avoid. i hit a home run on the first pitch with my leadoff hitter mcclouth only to end up striking out 18 times throughout the rest of the game. the hitting cursor never seemed to move as the pitch came, so every swing was off. while i do strikeout in mlb 2k10, it’s usually because i’m fooled by the change in pitch speed. i hate the half-ass swings in the show when you swing too early or too late. it just looks so lame and it frustrates to no end. also, in the show i was able to score a run after i struck out on a wild pitch, which looked like it was at the player’s knees. the catcher overthrew first base, rightfielder upton chased it down but stopped with the ball at his feet. i never stopped running. 2k10′s commentary is also top notch. it never bores or irritates, can’t say the same for matt vasgersian. 2k10′s right stick use during pitching, hitting and fielding is a blast. i don’t care for the show’s button mashing. the show is a good game, but i’m willing to forego looks for fun in this case. strange maybe, but, then again, i am strange.

Yeah, you're strange, and it seems like you suck at baseball video game because The Show is not that difficult. All you have to do is time it right. Yes, there are strikeouts, but for most I think it's a realistic amount.

But to each his own. Have fun with 2K10.

Hmmmm, how to respond to this. Well, I'll dumb it down for you since your dilusional mind actually thinks you've put together an intelligent argument here.

What is good gameplay when it comes to baseball games? Hmmm, well, when you play the game, you actually get realistic results based on your actions and decisions made throughout the game combined with the realism of actual player performance. Yes, it's just a one button press for hitting. But hitting should be simple. It's all about timing. As someone who actually played the game in the real world, I think being able to step up to the plate and judge pitches and hit based on timing is what baseball is all about. 2K10? Oh, yeah, you get a patch that includes check swings! And, to add to that, at random times throughout the game, the game actually tells you what pitch it coming! Now, that's realistic isn't it! Give me a break.

Baseball at its core is a simple game of timing, precision, and strategy. It's not about gimmicky motions with an analog stick that completely take you out of the experience of playing the game.

To put it simply, 2K10 is a video game, and you are always conscious of the fact that you are playing one with its gimmicky controls, weird physics and awkward animations.

When you play The Show you feel like you're playing a game of baseball, because simple controls allow you to focus on what's important in the game itself.

Oh, and no need to send in your application for law school just yet. Learning to capitalize words and the use of basic grammar are usually prerequisites to making it through law school.

Thanks. I'll keep my little niche title that is the best selling, highest rated baseball game EVERY YEAR! 2K10 does look better this year. And yes, I did only play the demo for 2K10 because if you think I'm going to blow $60 on that series you are crazy.

And smoke and mirrors? You ignoring all the reviews, all the experts, all the fans of the game, is using smoke and mirrors to make your point. When you say “everywhere I go I hear how great it is” but I “never see someone playing it saying its great” is just funny. So I take it you travel all over the country, knocking on people's doors, asking them if you can watch them play the game to get your sampling of players?

More like your three twelve year-old buddies who take another break from a ten hour Halo marathon to play a baseball game and bitch about it because it's…boring. And if you think real baseball is boring…i.e MLB 10: The Show (and thanks for equating it with “real baseball” because that's exactly what its replicating) then maybe you should just stick to Halo or whatever other pointless triggerfest you want to play.

i have played 10 games and have yet to hit a homerun in mlb 10 the show.last year i could hit about 2 a game. i am frustrated. am i doing something wrong or have they just made the game that much harder to hit homeruns.

  • http://twitter.com/DoctorMontalban DoctorMontalban

Yeah, you're doing it wrong. I hit 3 my first game (hadn't picked up 09 in months) and with Rollins, Ibanez, and Carlos Ruiz. And it was with the x button, so it's not like power button is necessary or only big bats hit HR's. Your timing is off. Check your swing and see what is going on there. It's not harder to hit HR's at all.
