MLB 2K10 Online Play Troubles

I’ve been looking forward to testing out the online play for the new baseball titles given that they have struggled performance wise in the past. MLB 2K9 actually ran relatively well online so I had hope that would be the case again this year but issues abound already for MLB 2K10.

The biggest problem being faced right now prevents users from even starting an online ranked game. Once the team select screen is reached no functionality on the controller works other than the ability to scroll through the teams. It is not possible to start a game or even back out of the team select screen. The user is forced to exit to the 360 dashboard in order to get out of it.

The image used for this article is what the team select screen looks like once it has been reached. The gamertags and controller icons do not display. “B” does not work to abandon the game and “start” does not work to begin the game. All that functions are the triggers which scroll through the teams to choose from.

When games have been accessible (getting locked into team select is intermittent) the widespread reaction is that lag is afflicting the performance to an extent that the batter must commit before the pitch is even on the way to the plate. I can attest to this having played one game which was very smooth but the delay at the plate makes hitting a crapshoot as you just swing and hope for the best.

More baffling is that the pitching is actually responsive. It is easy to get good power and complete the gestures without error. The delayed swinging yet responsive pitching leads to a ton of strikeouts and scoring just off lucky home runs. That conjures up memories of MLB 2K8, which had one of the worst online experiences ever, while MLB 2K9 appeared to have improved greatly in the area.

Reports of getting stuck at the team select screen trickled in on release day but it didn’t seem to be the epidemic that it turned into on Wednesday. A 2K Sports representative stated the issue was being looked into but it remains as of article publishing time.

i played some online on tues and it was a joke. i think i struck him out 20 times and he struck me out 18 times. and we were just throwing down the middle of the plate.

what really gets me about this is how 2k doesnt seem to care. they didnt show urgency with nba 2k10 online when it was really bad and here they barely respond. compare that to sony being so active about getting fixes out for the show. really sad for 360 people.

Thanks for the article. Hopefully 2K gets on the ball and gets online running and then get the lag fixed. Im actually having fun with the game but have been sticking to My Player since online is such a mess.

1UP gave the 360 a higher score than the PS3 because online play was supposedly worse on the PS3. That though was pre-release so I don't know if one has an advantage still. I don't know if anyone else has played both versions.

I have had the same exact problem with NBA 2K also. I get frozen at the team select screen really annoying. 2K online servers are just horrible, I know with EA you can get games right away. Sucks cuz I would rather play 2K then Live. For baseball I got a PS3 just for the show so I dont have to worry about online play with 2K.

HEY PASTA! there is a problem with 2K franchise mode with player contracts. apparently the contracts for players are to low and then when it comes to resign them in the off season all the star players are getting re signed for a low amount because team budgets are way up in postive cause player contracts are incorrect. which means there are never ever any talented free agents in the pool. anyway you can get a hold of 2K exec. and see if they have any intention in fixing this because in my eyes this a real deal breaker. MLB 2K has always had delay in the swing. Always. You have to adjust to it. In my two games played, it is noticeable but not the ruin of the online experience. The reason why this happens is because the game is processing more than it would when a pitch is being thrown. You have the movement of the ball reaching the plate and then the process of hitting. The pitch sequence is simple and doesn't have much going on outside of it.

Think about last year's terrible lag when a foul ball was hit or when a fly ball was hit to the outfield. It was terribly slow and would often result in an error from your outfielder. This year's game is much smoother than any past versions.

The issue with Ranked matches isn't a surprise and I would bet it's all because of rosters. This problem continues to plague 2K online. I have played unranked games and they work great.
I Own 2K On PS3

I actually own the game on ps3, I didn't really like the show, I still couldn't tell a big difference from 09 and if someone knows please point it out to me. I'm enjoying the game so far, and I never play online so thats no big deal to me. I know a lot of you guys that listen to everything pasta says instead of making your own decisions will be all over me for playing this instead of the show, but to me its actually a better baseball game. I make “My” own decisions so make every argument you want as to why I should have bought the show instead, still doesn't change the fact that I just don't like the show, no matter how much pasta promotes it. When will you fools wise up and learn that 2k will never market a quality baseball title. How many years do you have to throw away 60$ before you realize this. In any facet of life if you received this kind of quality in something that you bought you would have returned it and never bought it again but for some strange reason when it comes to video games, you don't seem to mind paying for crap. This is truly Baffling. With the money you are wasting for what is now 3 years in a row of substandard baseball, you could have already been halfway to a PS3.

I think this lag only applies to ranked games. I played a few custom matches with my friend and there wasn't any lag and we didn't have to swing early, and he's all the way in Alaska while I'm on the east coast.

I hope they fix the ranked match lag though, just got to give them some time to work out their server issues.

Pasta, you should re-visit this in a few days and see if they've improved it, but in the meantime, try a custom match with a friend because it is really smooth.

Third part exclusivity contracts. What's funny is I'm almost positive Microsoft can turn around and develop their own baseball game, but I don't think MS sees much profit. They're taking a break with their awful NHL franchise next season, and I've never played the NBA games so I can't comment on that, but I know the NBA 2K series sells well, regardless of whether they fix problems from year to year. It's pretty much the same reason Madden is still one of the most purchased games year in and year out. Everyone buys these games hoping for marked improvement, and 9 times out of 10, it ends up being a glorified roster update. From what I've heard MLB 2K10 finally has tweaked offline play to actually be playable, so they've done more than most companies in their position do, I'd still be disappointed if they didn't fix the online issues though, all they need to do is send out a patch, it's as simple as that.

NBA 2k basketball isn't the best basketball game anymore. If your game is broken out of the box and has horrible online play then you are not the best. Period. NBA Live 10 was not broken out of the box and the online play is significantly better than 2k's. It matters not which gameplay style you prefer. For the simple fact that 2k is of poorer Quality than Live is all that is required to crown Live 10 as the best basketball game of 2010.

Madden by default is the best football game.
NHL 10 is clearly the best hockey game and obvioulsy 2k knows is too as NHL2k11 will not be made for 360 and PS3

MLB2k is by far the worst sports franchise of all time. The only sports game that comes close to being ithis bad was Madden 06 for the 360. MLB2k clearly inept at producing a quality baseball game. The show is the gold standard for quality and its laughable to speak of 2k and the show in the same sentence.

i palyed my first online game last night and noticed the lag in the swing and multiple k's but i won my game 3-0 with a homerun…but i agree 2k has poor online service…I hope they rush to the aid like they did for NBA2k10 (my game was played on 360)

Ummm – not to disagree with anyone, but I figured I'd check it out for myself. Played a ranked game about 15 minutes ago …. played very smooth no problems. Lost 5-0 to Nationals (I gotta learn the controls – LOL – can't base run worth a damn) Nice sim game both pitchers had about 8 K's, no HR's, etc. Just thought it was worth mentioning, because it's clearly not affecting all games

Umm. The show is having problems online also. Where is that article. Games are dropping and once the game is dropped your PS3 freezes. Reboot the whole machine. Their is a post for that on Operation Sports.

Happened to me twice over a friends house. I go on Operation Sports and their are people talking about it. I only play sports games. Only online. I was ready to buy a PS3 and the show last year but the online portion never really worked.

If it was working properly I was going to go out and buy the PS3 yesterday along with the show.

It's still not working.

The main difference seems to be that a majority of PS3 users don't go online to play.

So their aren't as many complaints. But it's definitely a problem. 360 users seem to mostly only play online so it makes the online portion of a game mandatory. When NBA2k10 doesn't work online you have about 15,000-25000 pissed customers at any time of the day.

For the show to be game of the year it's funny how no one ever mentions online did not really work at all. Since most PS3 users just like jerking off in their bedroom instead of going out into the real world and getting human competition the show got a pass on the online portion of the game.

NBA 2k10 is a failure because it did not work online which it does now. Even though it was the best basketball ever offline just like the show was the best baseball game offline ever made.

Yet the Show gets a pass and named GOY and NBA2k10 is deemed a failure.
