MLB 10: The Show vs MLB 2K10 Player Face Comparison – Part One

by
Posted March 16th, 2010 at 2:50 pm

It is always worthwhile to compare different elements of competing games and the visuals are initially the easiest to do so. I went ahead and grabbed screenshots of 20 popular MLB players in order to judge how well their faces were rendered in MLB 10: The Show and MLB 2K10. The screenshots were captured using the same method so as to eliminate any difference in quality produced by the screenshot features of the particular games.

Continue on to check out 10 of the players up against each other from MLB 10: The Show and MLB 2K10. The final set of 10 players will be posted later this week. MLB 10: The Show images are on the top and MLB 2K10 are on the bottom. Vote in the polls for which you think are better and leave your thoughts in the comments!

Ryan Howard

Manny Ramirez

Joe Mauer

Jonathan Papelbon

Brian Fuentes

Alfonso Soriano

Evan Longoria

Roy Halladay

Tim Lincecum

Mark Buehrle

2K actually has a few that are better than The Show this year. Most I think are better on The Show but both games are hit or miss.

  • BigBlue5

Wow I know that The Show's visuals are by far superior to 2k's, but here it looks like 2k10 has the upper hand.

    • t. daley

That is b/c Pasta doesn’t know how to do a comparison. His pictures are utter crap. Screenshots are bull shit. Use video capture and do your comparison using each players walkup and at the plate shots. Then you can capture the whole picture of the visuals. Pastas Pictures are rediculous. Every picture of the show players is a tighter camera angle and more in the dark. How exactly is this a fair comparison pasta.

      • you’re stupid

pasta explained why he did that.

It’s because on the show the player’s shoulders are so ridiculously broad that everyone looks like Arnold Schwarzenegger.

So The Show’s pictures would have looked even worse, not better.

  • rondoman

    Wow.

2k has some better ones I agree.

Though the worst is 2k's Mark Buehrle as a Latino.

  • Adam

2k has always done better on the faces. just because the show has been a better overall game recently doesnt mean you have to be biased.

  • BU1B22

some of those screens r really impressive…the longoria one for the show looks amazing…too bad 2k couldnt make a better one for their coverboy. the shows alfonso soriano looks absolutely retarded though. looks like his head is bigger and wider than what a normal human should have

  • http://twitter.com/Shaunheiser Shaun Heiser

2k's version of Roy Hallladay looks like Carrot Top with a beard.

  • Jamin

I think that both Longoria's look fine.

  • Sidewinder57

It looks kind of 50-50 here. Both Longos are pretty impressive but you can really see the work The Show did for Joe Mauer.

I like that early voting isn't going down game loyalty lines. The Show is overall superior in visuals, especially when in motion, but I was surprised how many faces ended up looking better in 2K10. If I included the shoulders (because there are so damn wide in The Show) the heads would look worse in The Show because of that.

Wow, I voted fairly and agreed with everyone's opinion. Meaning, each vote I casted which was on all of them was in the majority.

  • Angry Guy

wow both manny's look pretty bad

I want to know who actually voted for the 2K version of Mauer… and the Show version of Soriano… IMO those two should be unanimous.

  • soulrak

Pretty much 50/50. It's really hit or miss. The ones that look better, look really better & vise versa.

  • Trojan92

    Pasta,

I agree, I'm huge Show fan, and I have to say 2k 10 has stepped up their game, I call it a draw across the board. Good job 2k!

  • Kevin

Funny how both cover boys Joe Mauer and Evan Longoria probably look the best out of any of the faces. Usually that's how it seems in video games. The cover athlete always gets the most detail and then everyone else follows. Which makes sense I suppose.

  • acerone

seems like he is a tough one. he always looks funny in baseball games

  • blondeviking64

some of the ones that people voted for 2k on I didnt agree at all. I thought the players looked cartoony, for example Lincecum. But 2k nailed Soriano and the show totally nailed Mauer. Some were a neither like manny ramirez. He was a full on nope to both Id say. not even all that close in fact. Game faces must be hard with that many players.

  • Cody

Would appreciate if some of the screenshots weren't from different angles. For instance, I think the Evan Longoria on The Show is better, but it's hard to compare when you use a superior viewing angle on The Show image as compared to the angle on the 2K image.

  • Cody

Also, just wanna say The Show's Roy Halladay looks like Kerry Wood to me. Not that 2K's is impressive either.

  • wangchung2nite

Why does everyone in The Show have Dracula eyes???

  • Mark

The Show needs to step it up with their player faces. Soriano is not even close in The Show compared to 2K10.

  • HustlinOwl

    50/50

  • Sportsgamer

While the show is more impressive overall in graphics, the faces look imo bad on The Show. They dont look right. 2k's look more human.

2k10 has a couple of good faces, Soriano for example. BUT, what about bodies? The Show is spot on. Other players like Jeter, A-Rod, Big Papi, Mike Lowell, and a bunch of others blows 2k10 away. The jerseys in 2k10 are awful, all the numbers on the jerseys are HUGE! Whats with that? And the gameplay isnt even a question…The Show stomps on 2k's balls in that category. 2k10 is an arcade game, pretty much like The Bigs but with more realistic presentation. I want my sports games to resemble the real thing and The Show is the only game out that comes close..

  • fail

    both games look bad imo

  • notreally

Nothing like The Bigs you might want to play it first before comparing it to something else. If you want something that is resembled to rl then 2kwins with commentary and presentation/overlays.

  • VoiceofReason

Aside from Papelbon, Soriano, and Lincecum (former 2k cover boy so they should get him right), I gotta give the edge to MLB but in all honesty both games have room to improve. The Manny ones need some work from both companies.

  • VoiceofReason

Agreed on the cartoony look, kinda has a super mario look going on lol.

  • Jd

    The show had prettier ones.

  • MattHolliday_7

How can people think 2k's Lincecum is better?

  • HustlinOwl

do fans next, that should be good lol, or better yet do the draft and the cloning taking place

  • nike21

2k have the edge on this one……they've got Lincecum, Longoria down…..damn Papelbon's looks he's allergic to peanuts on The Show…..overall visuals goes to 2k this yr

  • okafor43

Im shocked too by how some of 2k10 look better especially compared to last year, but why does 2k have the dull looking batting helmets while the show has shiney crisp helmets.

Nice captures. Definitely shows that both games are hit and miss when it comes to rendering the faces. It would have been nice if you could have provided real world pics to go along with the game pics. Definitely would have shown that both games struggle to render their real world counter parts in varying degrees.

  • pollster

    Pasta,

When you do these types of polls, could you exclude which one is from which company until after the poll has been done. Also, including real pictures of these guys would help. I have no idea who some of these guys are. This would give an impartial poll with real results.

Same here. Like most everyone, I think I alternated between The Show and 2K10 on consecutive sets of images. I must admit it's nice to have a bit of a rivalry going this year, not just a “competition” because you have two baseball games. Very well done by both teams.

  • 65South

Good point. I was thinking that when I was voting. 2K's Soriano looked tremendous in comparison to The Show's.

Pasta your screen shots are total bullshit. They all look shitty. For starters why are all the Shows screenshots much closer than 2k's. Its obvious that the faces will look worse the tighter the camera gets. Also the lighting in the screenshots you picked are largely different for both games which will have an impact on how the pictures look.

Why don't you render the players walkup or at the plate photos to do your comparison. I am sorry but these pictures are complete bullshit. I play the Show on a 52″ 1080p HD TV and none of the players look as shitty as your screenshots. EPIC FAIL Pasta………TRY HARDER.
