Clearing Up How GameFlow Works Online

A comment I made on Twitter the other day struck up a discussion that made it obvious the implementation of GameFlow for online play in Madden 11 hadn’t been clarified completely. GameFlow play-calling will remain as an option for unranked games, and can be either turned on or off for Online Franchise, but GameFlow will be activated for all ranked games.

With GameFlow turned on either party can access the full playbook it just requires a button press in every instance in which the desire is to reach it. So in an online ranked game if someone wanted to browse through their playbook for every play call they would be able to do so, however it would certainly seem to become an annoyance in having to hit that button after every single play. It is important to stress that having GameFlow on does not mean the full playbook is out of reach. It is up to the individual whether to take the suggested play or delve into the full playbook.

My main concern with this is based on one party or the other throwing off the balance of things. Should I choose just to utilize GameFlow for my plays yet my opponent continually goes into their full playbook it is going to mean waiting around for however long it takes them to select their play. The increased pace of the games, being touted the biggest advantage provided by the GameFlow feature, essentially then is negated.

I really hope Madden doesn't have exclusive rights to the NFL license after their deal expires in 2012 (I believe). NFL games need some competition.

  • http://40nickel.com DocZulu

Thank you for the clarification. For some online sites (e.g. sim style leagues that value diversity of playcalling) I can see gameplay going either way. In a casual pick up game online gameflow would be perfect.

  • Drock450

So for online franchise, is it going to be determined league wide by the commissioner on whether or not GameFlow will be activated, or will individual players get to choose? And when the hell are they releasing more details about updates to online franchise!

  • alex

Thanks for the info on this I noticed confusion about whether GameFlow meant you couldnt get to the playbook.

  • Nef77

How hard is it too understand? Gameflow = Ask Madden 2.0

  • http://pastapadre.com/ pastapadre

Well the commish can either set it to “On” or “Off”. So if its set to “On” then either player could use it or hit the button to get to the playbook. If “Off” then it would be no different than choosing plays last year.

  • http://pastapadre.com/ pastapadre

Not exactly…the ability to build a GamePlan sets it apart.

  • Drock450

    Thanks for the clarification.

Yo Pasta if you do ANYTHING at E3 it better be to find out if Madden is going to have free agency and slary caps in Online Franchise….anything else would be UNCIVILIZED LOL. Yo man do something for your supporters and get this info. I'd hate to make it 3 years without Madden, but I spent that 120 bucks on a fat sack so I can't complain too much….

Vision Cone, Pro Tak, “Beyond TV Presentation,” Game Flow — just the latest in a long line of gimmicks from Tiburon.

Tiburon is a bunch of talent-less hacks and has got to go. Period.

  • BeatJuggle

Here's a video that sums of Madden 11's game flow system: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7hEOhsl8eA

  • richie

I like gameflow but think in the ranked games they should keep it the same for both sides. just gameflow with no going to the playbooks. now these games are going to take an hour still and just make people get upset they have to keep hitting a button.

  • Amen Ra

Vision Cone, was actually a very good tool, but the no-talent QB run 50 yards and throw clowns got pissed and EA took it out. I agree with the rest of your thoughts on the bogus features. Whether or not Tiburon sucks is all in the eye of the beholder. I'm not convinced anyone else would be doing much better

  • Drock450

100% agree with you, I'm hoping online franchise looks a lot more like off-line franchise this year. Scouting of rookies, salary caps, free agency, etc.

  • http://pastapadre.com/ pastapadre

Id imagine we'll hear about Online Franchise by then, if not I'll see what I can dig up.

  • http://twitter.com/fittedhatlow Angel Navedo

I imagine things will improve once people grow accustomed to developing their preferred plays for Gameflow purposes. The hardcore folks are going to complain, but they do every year en route to making this a top game, so I'm sure it doesn't matter.

  • http://www.MaddenUniversity.com TNT713

I think it really depends on how substantial a player's game planning is pre-game… If someone actually does their due diligence and sets up a game plan beforehand, GameFlow will be a great addition. Seeing how most people use less than 15 plays per game, having 15 per situation seems like overkill…

    it's going to be interesting.

  • joe

yeah but the morons at EA never fix offline franchise.. Pasta please tell that idiot ian to make fixing offline franchise a priority.

  • joe

priceless.. they keep trying to reinvent the wheel.. how about fix whats broken 1st, jackoffs..

  • http://pastapadre.com/ pastapadre

True. Certainly there will be those that utilize the feature to the fullest degree. But casual players who jump online are less likely to do that, and will probably just go with what is called or slow things down by going into the full playbooks. So the overall experience doesn't necessarily improve, but strategically it could come in handy for those who go deep into setting up GamePlans.

  • soupmama

Very very good point that I hadn't thought of. Since i game with friends it won't be such a big deal… we may make a rule that you use gameflow to keep the game pace fast except on pivotal plays….

    Very good point tho

  • soupmama

Definitely, the more you put into this feature the more you'll get out of it. I really like it that they provided very specific information early on regarding this feature.

  • Daniel

Thanks for that original statement. I don't think I've heard that before.

  • http://nfl-ncaa.forumactif.com/index.htm Double C

But will we be able to setup gameplans for quick online ranked games?

  • jusmegamer

Seriously this is stupid, why would I want the A.I. picking my plays being that they are so phucking dumb in every other phase. It's no different rather you select plays to gameplan or not because they are still going to point you to best play in there opinion. I never want the A.I.'s opinion. This is overly hyped. Basically ask Madden to the 10th degree. I know I will be picking NCAA over Madden this year. Plus NCAA you can play better defense. Madden has no defense at all

  • Mykal94

Thanks for the original comeback. I don't think I've heard that before.

  • kwas686

LMAO what NCAA have you been playing plzz

  • Ghu55

Thanks for that original discussion. I don't think I've heard that before.

  • John

They have the license through 2012 so it wont be up untill february 2013

  • Erick

    I like Taco's. lol

  • http://twitter.com/Bgamer90 Bgamer90

Alright. What confused me was the whole, “you and the other user have to agree” stuff that they said in the chat about gameflow.

Thanks for the clarification. To be honest, I don't think this will go well for ranked games… I can see it being somewhat annoying to press x each time to get into the playbook and also as you said pasta, if someone is using gameflow and the other goes into their playbook all the time then one of the main points of the gameflow feature (to save time) will be lost.

To be honest, I think gameflow and gameplanning probably should have been put into the game for Madden 12…. seems like they somewhat rushed into this.

  • mitsurugi

this is bull#$%….just make it an option to be on or off…I don't want to have to hit an extra button…already with the damn accelerated clock its tough to get to the line and make any adjustments…and I can usually pick my play within 4-5 seconds if I dig into the book. Many people I know have resorted to using no motion or adjustments at all because they get too many delay of game penalties….I DONT WANT EA CALLING MY DAMN PLAYS….WTF is wrong with them….and every other jack@ss that likes this feature….learn about football and play the game….what fun is it to run what they call….absolutely NO STRATEGY….just great…way to F'ing go EA!!!!

  • jos33

    supposedly yes

  • Dan

    Soft or Crunchy?

    • Kray85

      Soggy Taco….NOM NOM!!!

  • t. daley

You all think that competition would certainly improve the football landscape and on the surface that would be true but what you are not considering is how good would any of these games be. Different doesn't equal good. Madden has been at this for almost 2 decades and yet you still complain. Do you honestly think that some new company will get it right, by your estimation, in the first year…….the second year………or even the third year. I say absolutely not. The only thing you will get from a new company is a new look and that is it.

Your complaints about Madden is the equivalent to lets say telling Mercedes to change there logo or for BMW to get rid of its trademark grill. Everyone is asking for Madden to change who it is. The real problem is that everyone has grown tired of driving the same old BMW or Mercedes and they want to drive a Porche. The only problem is that that Porche would most likely result in driving a Pinto.

  • graham

Stop crying. spend 30 min and set up a gameplan that works to your liking. if you only have 5 plays that you can run with succes than only put them in the gameplan. Evry year all you hear is its the same game and when they change it just a touch the sky is falling. This will be a great feature, if you actually use it.

  • PastaYourGettingWeird

What do you mean slow games down??? Nobody has time to play anymore??? Quit lobbying for FASTER games Pasta. Just because you don't have 40 minutes to play one, doesn't mean I want my games to be 10 minutes.

SLOW THE GAME DOWN What is that?? Have you ever heard of clock control or grinding drives?? STOP IT PLEASE!!!!!

  • tam tam

I have to agree! The true fan of Madden would never want the games to be shortened to the point were it feels like an arcade style game

  • lower the rooks

Better defense?? Shut up bro turn up your skill level or something BUM

  • lower the rooks

Just dont force us to use it if we don't want to and I am happy.. The extra button push is a Crock if you ask me.. I know it doesn't sound like much but when it is 100 times a game and you play over 1000 games of madden a year thats a F^#&ing a lot!!

This is going to be an Uncapped year in the NFL, why would there be a Salart Cap in Madden? Probably the plan all along as to why they didn't develop it.

  • Weaz

Even in an uncapped year they still sign contracts brah, unlike Online Franchise. :smh:

  • paul e.

yea, this is why i cant stand sports video game fans. they're the only group of video game fans that dont want their games to be innovative. they want the same old BS every year. if you change one thing they cry and complain to change it back because they cant stand to ever lose a game.

  • jusmegamer

Bet u would not tell me to shut up if I was in your face. Another weak internet gangsta

  • Might Boom

Again, this feature is nothing short of a MONSTROSITY. I am one of the players that will pick my play EVERY down – I can just feel the noobs falling on their defaults and giving up because I want total control over my win or loss. I hope these backwards developers get fired for this crap from all the negative backlash they WILL receive when this crap is released.

It will be a fine day when EA loses its NFL licence.

Pasta: STOP lobbying for faster games dude… WTF. Most Madden fans, including myself, want a strategic battle that lasts longer than 10 minutes!
