Confirmed: UFC 2010 Requires Code for Online Play

by
Posted May 19th, 2010 at 4:35 pm

Earlier this week word started leaking out that THQ would be including a unique one-time use code in new copies of UFC 2010 Undisputed. This code provides access to all online play functionality. If a used copy of the game is bought or if the game is rented, one would have to purchase a code through the marketplace.

THQ still has not commented even on the existence of this code program, which means amongst other details we are still left to wonder if there is any sort of trial period like EA Sports will be offering (looks unlikely) or what the cost will be to purchase a code (probably $10 or $15).

(Update) With the news no longer able to be concealed THQ has released a statement which can be found in full at Destructoid. The statement contains some odd wording including “additional” and “second-time buyers” which raised my antenna that we may not know the true extent of this code program yet. According to the statement the cost will be $5 but no mention of a trial period is made which likely means none will be offered.

Well this is not cool considering the gaming industry as a whole has been sub-par since all these exclusives started. With exclusives seemed to come more and more need to patch games, now this. The gaming industry is really getting out of control. Nevertheless, I will be waiting on MMA to come out, not because I’m going to buy it but because UFC will almost definitely have a price drop when MMA comes out to try and keep it from getting business. We must use our business savy since they surely will

It amazes me that we pay 60 bucks for a game, then we have to pay extra to for add ons, then we have to pay extra to pay if we buy used games. Every quarter these companies have reported increases in revenue so we know they are not losing money, they are just getting greedy! They have never needed to charge extra money before next gen so why now? If they would simply reduce the price of games 10 bucks then it would increase the amount of new games purchased at launch. remember 2k sports delivering a very good quality product for only 29.99??? if companies are losing money then how are they still in business and they don’t even have the NFL license. All I know is I used to buy new games all the time, but since the prices went up I have become a used game buyer!

Knowing they were going to do this all along they really shouldnt have tied in Gamestop to fighters again. Now not only do you have to get it new but you have to get it at Gamestop. Oh yeah and if you want everything you have to get the PS3 version. New-Gamestop-PS3. That is how you get the full game for your $60. Ridiculous.

Power to the players, right? I know thats a Gamestop complaint and not necessarily THQ but I hate how it’s “power to the players” and yet they force you to shop at one store. Hm.

If this is the case then the game should come with a $10 discount if bought used. Most used games are only a 5.00 difference from the retail price. They would basically be making a profit off on used games over the retail.

I completely agree with you if gamestop wants it’s used game sales to stay the same then they might have to drop another 5 dollars off

Funny the faux outrage when EA announced the Online Pass. No one seems to mind much here. And EA gives a 7 day trial for each game which from that screen doesnt look like will be offered by THQ. I buy my games new anyway so Im not upset with either company doing it but just find reactions hypocritical.

Wow didn’t see this coming. I guess every company is going to nickel and dime us to death. They need to lower the prices from 59 to 49 if this is the way the gaming industry is going to operate.

What? That’s the same thing as buying it new. They need to lower the price of new games to $49. They are really trying to stick it to the people who uses Gamefly.

Why would they lower the price of new games? The code is included with a new game, so it’s embedded in the price. Used games are going to have to lower their cost in order to sell. Sellers of new games have no reason to change their cost.

No issues with this at all. Used games will have to drop in price, as they should have before.

  • heisman988

technically you could wait until the fighters are released to the PS Store later so you wouldnt necessarily have to be tied to buying the game from one store….granted it may be months later but thats not forcing you to do anything.

So what man. 360 gets exclusive shit all the time. Sony and Microsoft pay big bucks for these little bonuses, how you going to knock the business man for getting his money. It's not like the fighters are some premium lvl bonuses either. If the game its glitched up like MLB then I will ride with you, but you just being a sissy right now
