Michael Jordan Signed for NBA 2K11

CNBC has been able to confirm that Michael Jordan will be the cover athlete for NBA 2K11. The possibility that he would be on the cover was first reported as a rumor from ESPN last week. In addressing the news 2K Sports did not go into detail on how Jordan would be used in the game but instead said there would be “some really good surprises”.

“It’s an honor to be featured on the cover of NBA 2K11,” Jordan said, in a statement. “I have no doubt that NBA 2K11 will be a big hit with gamers and basketball fans alike. I’m looking forward to getting back out on the court, virtually.”

In the report from ESPN it was stated that 2K had hoped to include Jordan as a playable character in the game and that statement from him basically confirms that much. Whether or not they will be able to sign other players from his time or legendary players to go along with him remains an uncertainty though it would appear likely to happen to some extent.

Well after Kobe made the 2K10 cover there was one way 2K could out do itself on the cover in 2K11… sign Jordan. 2K12 will need some supernatural being on the cover to transcend this one.

P.S. Looking forward to two kick ass basketball games in 2010!!!

    • JUST_DO_IT45

yea in 2012 lebron will be on da cover

  • http://pastapadre.com/ pastapadre

Yeah I was going to say, how do you top Jordan? Add Pippen, Magic, or Bird onto the cover with him?

    • Jasonh_86

They should do one with Jordan and Pippen; it would be so awesome! I’m proud to say Pippen attended my current University.

      • Anonymous

And I’m proud to say MJ, Pippen, and the rest of the guys represented my home town to the tune of six titles.

  • NatureBoy2323

It will be great to see MJ in action again. Even if it is just in a video game.

  • Timmy458

I'll be interested about the “some really good surprises”. I would like to be able to play as Jordan and do some of his signature plays and games during his career kind of like a Madden moments except with Jordan.

Was just thinking, we don't know the terms of the deal. I wouldn't be shocked if this was a multi-year deal with Jordan. 2K in the past has kept cover athletes (Jeter, Shaq) for a few years in a row so I could see that happening here too.

    • Bigeasye89

Theres a strong chance it is a multi-year deals. Fans would be mad if it was just a one and done year. I could see him being a multi-year cover guy. Look at Iverson he was on the cover for four years.

That's quite a signing. I'll probably pick 2k11 up this year after passing on 2k10.

I bet MessenjahMatt is relieved. He doesn't have to create him in game to make those epic vids anymore.

  • juan

    wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!! you know who.

  • juan

man, now there is no hope for elite.

  • mikesatx

VERY NICE!!! The Best Has Returned to the court! Eat your heart out LeBron!!!!!!!

Good stuff. If they add some more interesting game mode or features, this game will be solid

This may be the best cover signing ever.

  • 65South

HOLY SMOKES! No way in hell did I think they would pull this off. When I saw the articles that mentioned 2K Sports was going after Jordan, I thought ah nice try. I thought they were going to shoot for the moon and hopefully land on a superstar of the current generation. But I be damned if they didn't pull this off.

Seeing the way the legend's name sells shoes alone, I can't imagine what it will do for a game that has already has a pretty good grip on the genre. I personally skipped out on 2K10 and went with NBA Live 10, but this already has me thinking about what will be in store for 2K Sports under the Jordan cover. You just know they're planning to step up their game to match the success of landing the greatest the game has ever seen.

    WOW.

  • 65South

Couldn't agree more. I really don't think there's a way to top this honestly.

  • Steveheredia

wow…..wonder how much this cost……he never even did a cover for EA years ago. i guess it's sorta like EA gettin' the NFL license once nfl 2k5 started to come on strong. and nba live (elite) has been improving. pretty good move….

  • Amen Ra

    NBA LIVE/ELITE IS OFFICIALLY DONE!!!!!

  • Timothy Daley

Big Whoop!!!. Jordan on the cover means what?????????? Absolutely nothing. Its a picture on a box. As far as him being a playable character……..aren't we through overhyping Jordan yet. Hes a hasbeen, a ledgend. Who care if he is in the game. Sure its nice if you like playing with ledgend teams but really I ask you, Is signing Jordan and indication of anything related to fixing the fact that 2k repackages the same game every year and the fact that they cant get online right and they hardly update/patch their games.

As usual 2k uses smoke and mirrors to distract and mesmerize there loyal lemming fanbase into thinking that there annual repackaged game is the end all be all to video game basketball. Be smarter 2k fanboy and learn to see the forrest thru the trees.

  • Amen Ra

NFL2K5 was actually a threat to Madden. Live ain't scaring nobody.

  • buckeyeboi

Wow this must be devastating news to EA Sports especially because he used to be signed with them back in the day. It looks like it's a wrap for EA in the basketball world!

ITZ ONLY RIGHT DAT DA BEST B-BALL GM N DA WORLD SIGNS DA BEST PLAYAS N DA WORLD

KOBE 1ST & NOW MJ HIMSELF

    IT AIN'T EVEN FAIR 4 DA COMP 2K = $$$ MAY

  • MoneyMayweather

How? This has nothing to do with NBA elite why are you trolling?

  • MoneyMayweather

why do you say that? usally people who say things like this have a reason.

  • Joe Dener

Hmm, whats the big deal? They will have a cyberface for Jordan in 2k11 so you wont need to spend 5 seconds downloading one of the hundreds of spot on Jordan CAPs. Big deal. If they are going to do some kind of retro NBA thing with full legend teams, ACCURATE GEAR (short shorts) arenas, etc, then that is a different story. Until then people are just shitting themself over having a Jordan cyberface.

what this could mean is that they could use him to oversee the game and make sure it is top notch you have to try to look at the benefits of signing MJ. I would think they would want him to oversee some of the things in NBA2k11 but that remains to be seen.

  • NELL86

Thats nice in all but if the game still play like 2k10 they can put god on the cover and the game will still suck

  • http://twitter.com/Bgamer90 Bgamer90

Wonder if EA feels kinda betrayed… I remember using the “All MJ Team” in NBA Street Vol. 2 (awesome game btw; one of my top 5 favorite b-ball games of all time).

I wasn't planning on getting NBA 2K11 but I think I'll be keeping an eye out for it now seeing as how MJ will be playable in the game.

I might sound a certain way but ummmmmm i would defiantly buy 2k11 jus becuz MJ is on the cover.
I mean Jeez, MJ hasnt been in a nba game since who knows and nba fans like me have been waiting for him to return somehow to the virtual world.

Now trust me i know all of the problems with 2k10 and i made a mistake of pre-ordering it becuz i was so hyped with the things they were going to be doing with it (never again will i make that mistake with ANY game). And yes as much as there are positive, negative and even straight up in denial reviews about 2k10, that game needs a overhaul just as much as Nba 11 i mean elite. Some ppl might say “what?” “overhaul?” “wtf you talkin bout willis?” (too early?)

I'll tell you exactly what i mean:

Defense is atrocious (especially for your team), the animations in the low post are HORRIBLE, the isomotion has gotten out of control with all of these different type of crossovers to do that dont even work most of the time. The shot stick release is just………..wide open missed shots happen so many times that i've lost time counting. Auto post up. I think that is one of the most frustrating things on offense when your in control. The traveling animation. smh. just smh. Same thing with the charges and goaltending. They happen wayyyyyyy too much. And the graphic engine really needs a change. 4-5 years of the same visuals? c'mon man.

Sorry for the rant but i had to get that off my chest.

I honestly think Timothy, that 2k can fix most of these problems that me and you speak of.

And P.S. you're bugging if you think MJ is a hasbeen, buddy.

  • Jason Tha Horse

WELP,he wont be appearing in JAM now.=/

  • Bighousefan

I wonder if this means they will raise the price of the game to help off-set such a monumental signing? This is great, now they have to fix the game to play great like it used to, 2K10 had too many little nagging things wrong and online was just completely screwed…

I wouldn't be surprised if they changed the name and named it Jordan NBA 2k11 and made it the Madden of basketball. Have Jordan teach you the game and with his pull in the NBA he could do stuff like get coaches like Phil to lend voices to the timeouts. It would be crazy.

  • http://twitter.com/concity06 Quantae R

Your an idiot!!! Legends never die. Legends aren't has beens, they are forever will be legends. Michael Jordan is the greatest player of all time to this day. To say something stupid like that deserves a slap to back of the head.

I'm actually looking forward to seeing footage of ELITE. Euphoria(Backbreaker) is making huge ripples. Sounds like Elite has seen that canned animations aren't the thing anymore. Hopefully Ian( Now that they see Euphoria works with 22 people) follows suit. 2Ksports also.

This will probably end up making 2K11 it's best selling iteration. Cover athletes do have an affect on sales, not as great as game play or notoriety but it does play a factor. Had NBA Live went all out and signed Lebron James last year as their cover athlete they would have seen better sale figures. I know there are a ton of concious buyers who won't solely buy a game because of who and who isn't on a cover, but the cover athletes cater more to the casual gamers. Just my thoughts.

  • DaveDQ

The reality of having Jordan on the cover pushes the game levels above any competition. This is speaking purely in terms of marketing. You have two mainstream games, Elite and 2K. One is boasting new game mechanics with no history but what was Live. The other has the popularity of 2K Basketball and then Jordan on the cover.

Think about the first trailer for NBA 2K11 and the hype it will create. Again, this is just from a marketing standpoint, but 2K Basketball is already proven. It's a solid game and consumers know that. I happened to enjoy the last two years of Live, but when you consider the games past struggles to compete with 2K, changing the name to Elite and claiming a new game engine is going to offer very little in comparison to MJ.

  • Hungryandrew

I guess its time for EA Sports and their NBA ranchise to go take their long over due dirt nap.
