Recent NBA Elite 11 One-on-One Footage

At the cover athlete announcement party earlier this week those in attendance got a chance to try out NBA Elite 11. Out of that has come a video which shows the game in action presenting extended stretches of play with Lebron James going up against cover athlete Kevin Durant.

The quickness and responsiveness comes through at the same time displaying a lack of momentum and weight along with a sense of frantic action that doesn’t always fit within the context of what is taking place. One has to wonder if Elite isn’t shaping up to be a game that centers on the individuals (ie take Lebron and just do a bunch of dribble moves to get to the hole) as opposed to playing as a team. That would seem to be a reasonable expectation at this stage.

As mentioned previously all that has been put on display to this point has been through one-on-one which has certainly raised concerns about how everything will mesh in a full game environment. It appears right now EA is either using the one-on-one as a way to teach the fundamentals of the new controls or they are avoiding showing the game in full form for strategic reasons. I like the idea and direction they're taking, but it doesn't seem to be showing in the game. Also, when I hear “Real-Time Physics,” I expect something like Natural Motion gave us w/ Backbreaker. This still looks like canned animations. Pasta: Any word on when or if that's been implemented?

A little too fast, the pace needs to slow down just a bit. Hopefully they don't omit signature shots! Definitely looks like it will be a game about quick reactions and reading the defense, should appeal to sim heads, casual users maybe not as much. Could make online leagues a lot more interesting, and there could be a lot more recruiting.

To clear something up, word on the OS forums is that the footage of Cousins and Wall is of them playing NBA Jam (Wii platform) which was also showcased at the draft party. For some odd reason they edited the video to make it look as if they playing Elite. Believe as you may but a couple of OSer's have been confirmed to have attended the event so I trust the credibilty of their statements to a great extent.

They do move a bit fast but NBA 2K moves way too slow. Try running a fast break on there at the same time as one on TV. It’s way to slow for me.

You gotta love the collision detection so far. For people who haven't read up, no sig anything has been on these one on one demos. As long as we don't have serious morphs to where body and hands don't matter then you have to believe that Elite will be very solid. I've played ball at a very high level and without question Live10 was the better basketball title. So pasta you were correct when stating that. And I'm someone who's been a 2k guy all before. If you have real physics then what else can you complain about. On defense I want to be rewarded for contesting shots, and not be punished from some pre-determined animation. I'm not going to throw all my money into one pot yet with Elite, but having not seen any gameplay from 2k yet worries me. And we all said that last yr too. They didn't show any gameplay until very late and it was the same damn game as last yr maybe worse. And if your someone who's played basketball at a decent level you would be able to recognize that the best sim game 2k put out was clearly 2k7. Anyway liking that Elite is going to switch it up.

ughhh i wish sony would just come out with a bball game with the same amount of polish as MLB THE SHOW because I am tired of EA and 2K bball games. This just looks bad. the animation transitions look more erky jerky than live 10. It's early but I'm still in the no buy mode for this game.

That's why I said with the same amount of polish…. just using that as a reference point because they have the best sports game in the industry. Which shows they actually care that their product is received in a good way. That's the reason they stopped making a bball game in the 1st place, but whos to say they didn't just take years off to make a better, polished bball game. Note: sony's bball games did not have the same amount of polish or detail that MLB THE SHOW has, that is why I added: with the same amount of polish as MLB THE SHOW.

just compare the screenshots between 2k11 and Elite, its not even a competition. I dont know what 2k's gameplay is gonna look like but it can't be too hard to beat this…now all we need is NFL 2k11 (longtime EA fan until 2009 when i played my first 2k game)

Canned animations are in Backbreaker as well. The throwing motions, running motions, juking, etc are all captured animations, not generated on the fly, just like the dribbling is all captured animations. The Natural Motion engine, where the canned animations are gone, is when contact occurs.

My guess is that the Real-Time Physics will occur on drives to the basket where a player goes strong to the basket and the defender and him collide in the air or on charges. I wouldn't expect the Real-Time Physics to occur all that often and my expectations are that it won't look near as good as the backbreaker collisions.

True and I understand what you are saying, I was giving my immediate reaction. This is an early build and a work and progress, but I’m hoping that when 5-on-5 footage comes I’m as impressed as I was w/ Backbreaker. The NBA games need something refreshing and Elite may offer some of that. I just wasn’t as blown away as much as I was hoping to be on first sight.

Baseball is much easier to replicate in video game form, than other sports are, such as basketball and football where a lot more contact occurs.

However, I understand what you are saying, and it would be nice to have a basketball or football game of The Show's quality.

Definitely agree about baseball being the easiest of the major sports. Not saying its easy, but definitely the easiest relatively speaking.

What are the other games that are held in the highest regard? There are probably one two being FIFA and NHL. So its easier said than done to create a fully featured game with excellent gameplay. Even those, and The Show, have significant areas where they can improve.

That's possible sure. I think the difference here is people know what they're getting for the most part with 2K. With Elite this is a huge fundamental change and we still don't know at all how it'll fit in the 5v5 environment.
