2K Sports Thinks NBA Elite 11 “Looks Awful”

Last year both NBA games had their share of issues but 2K Sports and EA Sports engaged in an ugly campaign meant to put down the competition’s product. The back and forth included 2K questioning the first patch for NBA Live 10 and its inclusion of community feedback. EA Sports retaliated with a blog showcasing complaints about NBA 2K10 and all the people who were selling it on Craigslist. It was an embarrassing series of events that ended up making both companies look bad and created the perception they were worried more about the competition than making sure their own products delivered on promises.

Could the bickering for this coming year be starting already? In response to the NBA Elite 11 footage posted late last week 2K Sports representative Ronnie Singh had this to say:

Wow that looks awful. And you were worried.

Both companies have stated that the public bickering between them would cease and full concentration would be on putting out the best products possible. This statement suggests otherwise and that animosity is clearly still present. I don’t think anyone would have expected either side to be talking about the competition publicly after the backlash that came with their actions last year but here we are still in June and it has already taken place.

This is essentially the only major sport that includes competition these days. It’s arguable whether that has led to better products the last few years but there is more hope for just that with EA Sports scrambling by reinventing its franchise and 2K Sports resting comfortably as the leader in the market with Michael Jordan as the NBA 2K11 cover athlete.

if it says that someone liked your comment, that was me; i accidentally clicked on like instead of reply. madden 10 is 5 years and 1 generation later, and has much worse presentaion than 2k5. the fact that we're comparing a game that came out last year to one that came out in 2004 proves that 2k5 still at least holds a candle to madden, and that ea has produced crap football games this generation. i have to agree with you that ncaa 11 looks really good, but quit with the homophobic rants. it's getting old and it makes you look like a 12 year old (apologies if you actually are 12 years old).

I still don't even see why people are even judging that video. Its obvious whoever was playing was a newb and there is an actual dev video out there that is 7:00 min long and looks waaaay better. Almost seems like they're scared……..

2K Ronnie is a douchebag. I have followed his postings on the 2k site and it is clear to me that he is definitely worried about the competition this year. Him making a comment like that on unfinished game product is completely indicative that he is worried that EA will further close the gapwith 2k especially since 2k admitted that this years game would focus on the “POLISH” which is code for “GIVE YOU LAST YEARS GAME AGAIN ONLY FIXED.”

This years battle is going to come down to those 2k fans who are inclined to own both titles. If a 2k fan has the desire and the money to own both titles and EA presents a stellar game then they will indeed own both games and EA's numbers will climb. You cant expect 2k fans to come over to EA regardless of how good the game may be if they are only going to buy one game. Inevitibly they will choose the game they are used to and most comfortable in playing. It would take a drastic move by EA like reducing the price of ELITE to force this issue, much like 2k did back in 2k5 when it lowered their entire sports line to 19.99 with hopes to get people to try their product. It for the most part worked and it certainly captured EA's attention and was the driving force behind the EA's exclusivity license with the NFL/NFLPA/AFL/NCAA

Oh I agree 100% about them not utilizing espn in the past. The game has sucked until recently. But realistically, if you have someone who knows nothing about video games with no biased agenda watch them back to back a vast majority would pick madden 10. I know it’s unfair based on 5 more yrs madden has, but it’s true. I’ll say again, if 2k could still make NFL games, I’m sure it would be no contest

Oh and to anyone who thinks I’m gay for EA, I fucking hated EA until last yrs Madden. There were remarkable improvements last yr. NCAA 11 demo is the shit. NCAA 10 sucked ass. Back when 09 came out (in 08) and u couldnt even play franchise without it freezing I was ready to give them up for good. Madden 08 and 07 were ridiculously bad. If 2k could still produce a licensed game, It might have put EA out of business. It is a shame it took EA sooooo long for them to make a good game.

Yes, the character models are not as good as 2k, but the controls for Elite are the real selling point. And they are actually showing how it has changed and improved. 2k on the other hand hasn't released anything other than a crappy trailer that doesn't even show new footage, and they announced that MJ will be on the cover. To me, that says that they aren't even trying to actually improve their game. Honestly, 2k10 was full of glitches and bugs, and the AI was absolutely terrible. There were so many issues with losing control of the player, especially on defense. Those are the things the need to focus on, not who the cover athlete is. Their new presentation was 75% recycled from 2k9, and the few new things they added seemed like they were thrown in at the last minute. Again, my point is that EA is making an honest effort, and to me it looks very promising. The dribble moves look great, and from the demo video, it looks very responsive. Granted it needs some work, but they have plenty of time. But for Ronnie to say that when they haven't released anything, and 2k10 was a joke from release, is ridiculous. Also, on a side note, They need to fix the uniforms in 2k. Every player looks fat because they make the jerseys too baggy. And both games need to fix the shorts. Not everyone wears their shorts knee length.

2k will never reach the 90 plateau on Metacritic simply because they keep releasing the same game every year and they never infuse anything worth of the higher scores. The same thing happens to most sequels in games too. The critics are wowed by the first game but when the second game comes out the critics are less enamored since they seen it already. Is it fair, no, but that is how it is with critics.

So what?……are we to discern from these to statements that Graphics only matter in bastketball games but not in Football and gameplay only matters in football but not basketball.

What does any of that have to do with gameplay, which by the way is most important. NBA players are drenched in sweat throughout the entire game and EA chose to represent in the game. What is your problem. You douchebag 2k fans complain about lack of different sneakers in 2k and have the nerve to complain when EA chooses to put sweat on the players.

And 2K's hoops game, while better than EA's, is not perfect. I read somehwere (maybe here?) that they still use the same online structure that the used for NBA games released for Dreamcast…

The video looks much improved, and i know its only the beginning but looking at that one drive to the basket where jennings was defended, it looked like the defence had no options when put into a situation like that, he just got run over with no affect on the offensive players shot. It wasn't altered, affected or anything. To me the dribble moves look very similar to live 10's. The shot mechanic is a good idea, but it seems like a shot meter, similar to playstations NBA game. If I am understanding this correctly, if I know the shot release for a player like Kobe, I would be able to make every single shot if I master his release, unless a defender blocks it. That seems unrealistic. I will rent NBA Elite to try it out, but I still prefer older basketball games' (live and 2k's) shot mechanics. The one thing I do like is bank shots in elite, because not all bank shots that go in will look the same, hopefully. Despite all this, right now in my opinion, elite doesn't look good, considering what I said above. I mean, how hard can it be to make Jennings shoot left handed? I know it's early but at least show a right handed player shooting right handed. I hope they didn't do that on purpose…

Wow, this headline actually made me laugh, not because I'm sticking up for either side but just because he would say that. It just sounded funny.

I don't really have much to say about the Elite vs NBA2K deally but I will say that Elite has a heavy lead on getting my dollars, this year. I liked what was done with Live 10 and haven't liked what 2K has been doing with their NBA series for a while but just tolerated it since Live was weak for so long.

Last year, only Live 10 got my money which is a first. I usually try to pickup both but 2K had me for a while where I didn't buy Live. Live 08 kept me away from 2K8, even though I had both and 2K9 had me all the way where I didn't even mess with Live 09 because I didn't think Live 09 stepped it up, much, based on the demo. Live 10 sold me and I like the direction it gave to lead to what Elite 11 is doing.
We'll see how this year goes.

I had Madden 05 and NFL 2k5. I preferred madden because of the competetiveness when playing with friends.
In 2k5 any child could average 200 rushing/Kick Return yards per game. They let you boost by button mashing and then when a defender comes, you quickly charge up a circle that lets you break any tackle? It was not a bad game at all but people are holding onto it too hard. I don't think madden is horrible but it really did start to fall a bit after 2008.

About 2K and live, I owned both Live 05 and NBA 2K5. 2K was too easy for me so I left it for the bigger challenge back then. I would rather get live today because I have more fun. I rather good controls instead of creepily hunched/bulky shoulders, floating jerseys, and great faces. and if they can make Elite look like 2010 but play a bit more like 08/09, then I'd be the happies man alive.

the game gives you full control and even the control in live 10 was way ahead of 2k10.
it gives you so much control that if you drive right its up to you to put the ball in your right hand.

thats where 2k would put a canned crossover in. 2k has stated their direction and its clear it the same direction live 10 had.

so this is funny. even wang said he left 2k because it had reached it ceiling, could progress no futher and ea had better tech.

have you seen the 7 min gamespot demo? if pasta put that up you would all see the hype for the early buiild is well deserved.

about the 1 on 1 vid that looks terrible because it in control of terrible players. gone are the days where the fact that im a good player doesnt mean anything. skill in elite will show due to full control.

where 2k i could lose to anyone with turbo and lebron.
