Maroney and Loeffler Upset With Their Representation in Madden 11

It never fails that there will be players that publicly speak out against their Madden ratings. Many go about contacting EA behind the scenes in an attempt to get their ratings boosted but others aren’t shy to go on record about it. Two as of late have cropped up. New England Patriots RB Laurence Maroney is one while Minnesota Vikings long-snapper Cullen Loeffler has a completely different gripe.

In Maroney’s case his gripe seems to be centered on his speed rating, something that seems to be a point of contention more than any other category among players as evidenced last year when TJ Houshmandzadeh made a big deal out of it. Ironically Maroney has been absent from the last two preseason games leading to speculation he has fallen way down the depth chart.

“They got me terrible on Madden, man. I wanna tell Madden that too… You know what’s crazy? When I had my little shoulder problem (in 2008), I was 93, 94 speed on Madden. After my shoulder, I came back at about 88. What’s my shoulder got to do with my feet? I know I ain’t that slow…Madden trippin’ on my speed, you know I’m not an 88. He got Fred and them faster than me. I know they ain’t faster than me.”

Cullen Loeffler though is upset that he isn’t even included on the Madden rosters. The long-time Viking is entering his seventh season and has never once appeared in a Madden game.

I don’t even play it, mainly for the reason I’m not in it,” he admitted. “I feel disrespected.” Though Brett Favre jokingly exclaimed “I think it probably makes the game better…Who the fuck is Cullen Loeffler?”

The problem of course is that EA has hamstrung themselves by including only 53 man rosters with some of those slots ending up being taken by players on IR. That has always meant that specialists get shafted in favor of players that can better contribute in the game. It’s why there are sometimes starters playing special teams and long-snappers, such as Loeffler, are omitted because they would essentially be inconsequential. Pretty much any player can snap in Madden with no difference in the result.

They should be upset with the game – period. Ratings that don’t reflect an actual player’s skill set are just one of the many problems. We need NFL players to voice their opinions on this year’s atrocity.

LOL…I watched the long snapper this morning on Cold Pizza (I hate the 1st Take name and concept) vent his frustrations.

When is the patch for the stratedgy pad changing it back to the old audible/adjustment system coming out?

If this was ps2 I would be mad but this new stuff blows I wouldnt even care

long snappers do need to be in madden. there should be bad special teams snaps too, that screw up the kick or the punt….if its in the game….

  • http://GoMadden.com GoMadden

I agree on bad special teams snaps. Would add another dimension to the game. In Madden 11, sometimes you’ll get a bad snap from shotgun, and the ball will go too high, too low, or to the side, each with their own recovery time to begin throwing. Same thing should be for kicks, which could make going after the punt actually useful once in a while.

As far as Maroney’s issue, he can take it to Donny Moore all he wants, but the fact of the matter is it’s his opinion. He makes the ratings with his opinion, stats, injuries, all that in mind, but there’s no facts to the ratings on the game. I hope that at least in Franchise next year they give us bigger rosters.

I’ve noticed Madden ratings can tend to be more influenced by position on the depth chart than actual skill. You’ll see guys who are low in the order have a lower speed rating almost as if Madden needs to justify them being there. Maroney’s a good example of this since the Patriots have about 20 running backs and they probably one to be overwhelmingly dominant in the game. It’s not the case with everybody but it is confusing to see it on occasion and I don’t blame Maroney for complaining.

EA needs to expand the rosters, it is starting to get ridiculous. After each week in preseason you should have to make cuts until you have your final 53 man roster for the reg season. Get with it EA, it’s pathetic that it isn’t in yet.

In general, there should be more animations that give the game a sense of “unpredictability”. Bobbled snaps… tipped catches on offense and defense… Things that make the game feel less scripted, but yet don’t get unrealistic (Madden already has enough animations that do that.)

  • Rda03c

Considering Ian and Phil’s track-records, if they added that dimension, it would probably happen 1-2 times a quarter, giving it one more layer of arcade style game play.

  • UBetcha

Funniest thing Brett Favre has ever said.

And your shoulder doesnt have anything to do with it Lawrence, they changed the way they do speed ratings last year, remember? Oh………and youre not that good.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Corey-Ragland/13752595 Corey Ragland

Maroney’s ratings could be because of when they readjusted all ratings to put a bigger difference between good and bad players couldn’t it? I believe that happened in that time. But as for Loeffler, Madden just needs to FINALLY add in how IR works. If IR worked like it really does then there would be no reason not to include long snappers

You would think that a players speed is the one metric that Madden could get right every year. All of these players have recorded 40 times and its an easy metric to translate into the game.

Its a bit immature for a grown man to cry over his ratings in a video game but if he feels that strongly about it maybe he should record a 40 time for tiburon so they can justify the increase.

Hey we got gameflow and strategy pad……..>LOL

  • holla at ur boy

A MAJOR problem is that each team requires 10 OL … many teams carry less than that. Therefore the 53 man rosters are never accurate.

  • Anonymous

It funny though. There’s like 27 or so ratings in Madden and that is the only one that players ever complain about. I would love it if every linemen would complain about their THP or KPW rating. Now that would be funny.

Rating is all speculative. It is completely impossible to get them anywhere near correct. Its not like Donny Moore is running his own combine and recording data on every player in the NFL. This is nothing new. Ratings are what they are and have been that way for 20 years.

Supposed to be right around the start of the NFL season. So probably the second week of Sept

  • http://pastapadre.com/ pastapadre

There is a difference though between 40 times and game speed.

  • http://pastapadre.com/ pastapadre

    Good point as well.

  • Kyle

True that. A lot of teams have swing tackles and players that play guard and center. Also Dallas runs with two DT’s. They are a 3-4, so they plug min Spears when depth runs low.

  • Anonymous

    2 dt’s in a 3-4?

  • sheredia

i agree…..do something different for a change. think out of the box. not too often, but every once in a while would be kinda cool. they do claim “if it’s in the game, it’s in the game…..”

  • ROTFLMAO

it doesn’t matter. Its all relative. If Player A is faster than Player B in a the 40 without pads then it is likely he will be faster with pads. The point being is that the metric is easily measurable and comparable.

I thought that was abundantly clear. Maybe not. Here, try rating a player awareness rating accurately. See what I am talking about now?

  • Bobbby83

yea two dt’s and and the end spears can also play dt if there is ever need of substitution

  • ummm

Speed is the only rating that matters on Madden for every position besides QB.

    • woogie boogie

and Offensive Line, there all that matters is strength

  • Anonymous

    only 1 dt in a 3-4 dude

  • http://twitter.com/TheCrow471 Cody

Maroney shouldn’t be upset, he’s a damn bowling ball in the game. Even if he is slow.

  • gayzville

don’t hold your breath. And where is injured reserve too? I honestly think they don’t even attempt to make this game good, but spend all their time fucking each other in the ass.

  • http://twitter.com/TheCrow471 Cody

    Double post fail.

  • gayzville

Madden still doesn’t have a true 3-4 in their game and it’s been popular in the NFL for over 10 years. Not to mention now more than half the teams in the nfl use it. the people in charge of this game are so fucking pathetic and worthless.

You know, oddly enough, I think the lack of a general overall rating might help Donny Moore get it right. He can’t just set a player to an “appropriate overall rating,” he would actually have to pay attention to his attributes. That way nobody gets screwed or overrated in certain categories. For example, if a guy plays like an 85, that’s good but not great. Currently, Donny reduces the guys in stupid categories like awareness to lower his overall from say, a 93, to an 85. Without that overall rating as a benchmark, he would actually have to pay attention to specifically what a certain player is good at. But this would never work with EA sports because it requires actual work

  • Bigj

there is no defense in madden at all. if you play as a 3-4 team you cant get any pressure on the qb no matter how many players you bring. in the 4-3 same way and when you do get to the qb, he makes a sick throw as you have him wrapped up to get rid of the ball, which i believe was fixed with a patch (or at least attempted) last year, funny how it’s an issue again this year. any time im up against a qb rated over about a 80 he will be like 27 for 33 for 486 yards. to make up for the unstoppable passing game they just made the cpu throw a ton of interceptions. picked off peyton manning 5 times but he was 37 for 47 for over 500 yards and they only scored 9 points.

  • Juice

Actually, if you notice, they don’t say “if it’s in the game, it’s in the game” anymore. They say, “EA SPORTS, it’s in the game”.

They realize it’s a false advertisement to say that.

  • 4×3=12

im soooo glad they fixed the quitting in online im 2-0 both my opponets quit. Hit me up PSN:PackDuDe425-Green Bay all day

Haha…I deal with that shit all the time. Every time I even get my hands on a QB somehow he gets a throw.

The worst though is making a tackle with Patrick Willis. But I missed at least 8 tackles with him and at least 4 of those should have been for a loss. Apparently Patrick Willis can not tackle Justin Forsett. Bullshit!!!

Right, and how about a practice squad? I know it’s not super important, but it should be in the game.

  • walkergodeep

RATINGS DONT MATTER IN THIS GAME EXCEPT SPEED THATS ALL MADDEN CAN DO!!!

  • walkergodeep

YEAH UR RIGHT THEIRS ABSOLUTELY NO PASS D IN THIS GAME NONE AT ALL…DEION SANDERS WOULDN’T BE ABLE TO COVER IN THIS GAME!!!!…MADDEN ALWAYS SEEMS TO F@CK SOMETHING UP EVERYTHING ITS SOOO ANNOYING!!!

  • Montes Rafael

it jsut shows madden sucks and suck at ratings… and lots of work needs to be done…

  • Montes Rafael

to me there needs to be a difference between a nose tackle and d tackle in madden… just my opinion tho… like it should be a different position…

    • N/A

It really isn’t a different position, both are Defensive Tackles. The position just gets called a “nose” tackle once a team is lined up in the 3-4 defense.

It’s kind of like High School or College football with the “split end” position, or the “half-back” position. It’s really the same positions as a Wide Receiver or Running Back, but are called different things according to how they are lined up.

If you want to play the 3-4 then draft or sign a Defensive Tackle with the attributes a 3-4 team usually looks for in a “nose tackle.” (i.e. short, strong and hefty).

  • PR1MO

All of you people need to quit complaining about Madden. If u dont like the game then dont buy the damn game. Its a video game, not human cloning for GOD sake. Shut up and play or just play something else. Stupid a$$ people always complaining like little bitches…..

  • Allmaddenking

Some people are faster when they are in a game. Some are faster when they have a ball in their hands. and What happens if player A is a sprinter and b is a football player. The pads will slow the sprinter down more than the football player will right?
