Will the 360 continue getting better versions of EA Sports games?

Microsoft games chief Don Mattrick references two EA Sports titles in an interesting post-CES memo. Mattrick took over the position vacated by Peter Moore when he left to head up EA Sports. Within the memo Mattrick made a comment about how the 360 is not only seen as the console of choice for sports fans but how it will continue to have better versions of the same games as compared to the PS3.

…we will continue to be the leading choice for sports fans, with the next editions of Madden and FIFA looking and playing better on our platform.

While it is no surprise that the 360 is and will likely always be the console that has the strongest support from sports gaming fans this generation, it was expected that the PS3 versions would be at least up to par on a visual and performance level from here on out.

Recently EA reached 60fps on the PS3 with NBA Live 08 making the two versions virtually identical. Prior to that games such as NHL, Madden, and NCAA Football ran at only 30fps on the PS3 resulting in them feeling slower and less responsive.

In general the only separation between the two consoles with these games should be the controller rumble, achievements, and online features related specifically to the capabilities of the particular systems.

Whether the 360 versions will continue to have obvious advantages will remain to be seen. It is however curious to see a comment made by Mattrick, who stepped into Moore’s position, stating that there will be discernible advantages while citing games such as Madden 09 and FIFA 09 which are over half a year away from release.

I think it should also be mentioned that the architecture differences between the 360 and PS3 are a leading contributor to the performance differences. A Game programmed for the 360 and then ported directly to the PS3 is not optimizing the hardware available from the PS3. As a blatant offender of shoddy ports, EA should be picking up their act moving forward. Especially with companies like Naughty Dog, Epic, Insomniac, and the like, producing games at the level they are.

Funny how this comes out, and yet PS3 has online team play in NBA Live ‘08 and Xbox 360 doesn’t. Right now, I’m wishing I had the PS3 version.

Who does this guy work for? Exactly! MacDonald’s tells me their food is healthy too! I think NBA live is a prime example that going forward the games will be pretty much equal no matter which platform you have, and that’s the way it should be. I bet EA would state different the this goof-ball!

I’ll take a MS exec’s word with a grain of salt. If Peter Moore, former MS exec that he is, continually says the gap is closing, I’m inclined to believe him. FIFA 08 is a prime example of an EA Sports title that runs brilliantly on the PS3. So brilliantly in fact that they used it for all the tech demos before it arrived to retail.

Lomax, do you mean to tell me McDonald’s food ISN’T healthy???

What about 1080p most of EA’s games are 720p. I needed to buy NBA 2K8 to get 1080p. This sucks 1080p is the future not 720p.

I seems like a lot of ps3 fans are mad… good!
The responces on here make me laugh
Fifa is this on ps3.. nba live has more ppl able to play at the same time…

Too bad EA servers suck, and having 10ppl online in a match would be filled with sohh much lag, that I’m not even gonna pretend it could happend smoothly when I cant even get thru a game of Live w/out lag.

Also, if EA is soooo lazy,
    Then why did All-Pro-Football 2k7 also run @ 30fps?

    I rest my case…

Theirs no logical hardware reason they should. Simple fact is the PS3 has the best home hardware out. But it is finicky. And when you get your hands on anything that you have no clue about, and are told to do something with it now. Problems will happen.

Madden does not have the luxury of delaying till next year, or for 6 months. The had to throw what they had then. PS3 stuff will improve the most out of the three over this gen. Its jumps will be much larger than the jumps we see on the other 2. Thats a plain fact also. And the user base will creep up, or at least be on par with the 360 by mid 09. And probably pass it in a few years do to its BR and tech. So not only should Madden look as good latter. It should really look better on the PS3 eventually. Just by the simple math of hardware. But will see? A even game in 09 would be a start.

But with the user base bound to jump. And a eventual hold on the gaming industry for Sony once again coming. If trust is lost, and EA spends a few to many years kissing butt, to the machine that will eventually be last. Their gonna loose a tun. Maybe even more than Micro pays them for the extra attention :P or non attention they give the PS3 version.

But I have to say, a lot of PS3 owners wont buy EA no matter how well they improve. And that could be a major blow for them, tilt they get some true trust back. Alot of other games are gonna look just amazing on the PS3 in 09, in the hands of many of new users. While EA may look like a idiot making PS2 looking games. You gain trust, you gain years of money. You loose it, you could fall to other sports titles “despite having a NFL license.” Ask Naughty Dog how good they feel about the future of their company, now that they paid attention to the PS3. And although Uncharted did not break sales records. Their in the drivers seat to sell a tun off of sequels, and the Uncharted game engine.

Courtdog..why don’t you go suck on some sweaty nutsack or whatever dogs do nowadays (lick their own asses?)! 360 owners are nothing but a bunch of haters who are smirkin and talking shit because they have better games now. Didn’t you learn anything in life yet? XBOX 360 won the battle now but PS3 will win the war. Why? Just look at the hardware fool!

Its not how you start but how you finish. *I wonder if Courtdogs XBOX had suffered the ring of death yet?

honestly until recent the PS2 still sold more games than all of the next gen consoles……I see a great reason for favoring the ps3 out of the starting gate, because it appears to be “in it for the long haul”.
I now that the PS3 is finally running games at equal frame rates with the 369 we can finally get a fair argument at which is a better console for sports games.
Hopefully, next year, all pro 2k9 football, madden 09, NCAA09 and mortal kombat 8 will show what the ps3 is capable of.
