Exclusive interview with Peter Moore this afternoon

February 12, 2008 by pastapadre

EA has granted an opportunity for an exclusive interview with Peter Moore to discuss the breaking news that the exclusive license with the NFL has been extended. This will take place early this afternoon so a brief recap will be available soon after with a more detailed transcription of the interview sometime in the evening hours.

If you have any suggestions for questions to be asked or concerns to be addressed feel free to post them in the comments or email them to me directly. Please keep them all related to the topic of NFL exclusivity. They’ll be taken under consideration but there are no guarantees that each and every one will be discussed.

This is a pretty unique opportunity to have a direct one-on-one interview. Thanks to everyone who got some thoughts in to me for this. Check in later today for the summaries.

In the meantime Jon Robinson at Gametap has posted an interview he conducted with Peter Moore on the news. Check it out here.

Exclusivity has made both baseball and football games worse. What is next, the NBA? This is a dark day in sports gaming

    1. Why do you need the exclusive license, are you afraid of competition?

I’d just like to know if they do anything differently developmentally when having an exclusive license vs when they have competition

Does the license allow ea not to try as hard?

Congrats. on the interview Pasta. Can you ask peter if he plans on making the ps3 game better this year, I know alot of ps3 players are angry with EA over this, and what can he do to get the respect back from the ps3 players. Thanks Dude

    Pasta-

I’d like you to ask him about presentation, as well as atmosphere in Madden from here on out.

I want to know why EA has had the exclusive NFL liscense now for 3 years, and we have yet to see ANY presentation upgrades (all we see are downgrades) since the deal hit.

Where are multiple NFL announcers per game? Where are all team alternate/classic jerseys? Where are weekly wrapups with highlights? Where is the broadcast presentation we all want? WHERE ARE THE IN GAME STATISTICAL OVERLAYS!?!? Why is the Superbowl presentation generic? Where is the “NFL Films” option where I can create my own highlight reel and upload it to the servers, complete with music? Where are online leagues (didn’t 2k set up the framework for that 5 years ago on last gen systems?)?

Basically, why do you even have the NFL liscense when you don’t integrate anything that it involves into it? It’s almost like the ONLY reason they got the liscense was to just put competitors out of business, instead of actually utilizing it. Honestly, Madden 09 will be the 4th Madden on Next Gen, and if this one doesn’t give us any of the presentation (or even something as simple as all alternate jerseys), then I think we can sum up next gen football as a total failure.

Hey, thanks for giving us the opportunity to ask Mr. Moore some questions.

I’d like to know when Madden is going to start really utilizing that ESPN license the way 2K Sports did all the way back to NFL 2K4. That game was saturated with ESPN - the Chris Berman pregrame, postgame, and halftime shows; the stats overlays; the replays; Suzy Kolber, etc. etc. But EA has had the exclusive ESPN license for 3 yeras and all they’ve out into the game is a measly little ticker.

    Why?

    Thanks,
    Mike

Getting some good suggestions so far here and through email, appreciate it. The presentation/atmosphere topic is something I’ll definitely bring up.

    agree with this post.
i dont know how much Moore will know since he’s not solely involved with Madden but maybe he can know.
    one more though:

With the new Euphoria engine, is there any chance we see EA try to partner with Euphora and incorporate this into there games? It would be great for multiple games including Madden, NCAA Football, Fight Night, even NBA Live and NCAA Hoops.

    1) Since Madden has received the NFL license, there are concerns that the game has been stagnant without competition. Some examples of this are the lack of presentation, the game being released with major gameplay problems (one of many examples: fumbles and interceptions when Madden was released), and an overall lack of innovation. What will Madden do to innovate without any competition? And when you say that “this won’t be an ordinary Madden year“, are you hinting at a new gameplay engine? Or other bells and whistles in the game?

    2) Is NFL Tour an example of the direction that EA Sports wants to go in with regards to the exclusive license?

    3) The Wall Street journal reports a 10% decrease in sales for EA Sports over the last year. Was this expected, considering EA Sports holding the exclusive licenses for the NFL, NCAA football, FIFA, and the Premier League? And do you think this decline is due to a) backlash from unhappy gamers due to the exclusive licenses, b) lack of innovation in EA Sports titles recently, c) the perception that they are paying $60 for roster updates with a few extra additions or d) other factors?

    4) You say that the NFL contacted EA Sports and presented the opportunity for an exclusive license. Does EA Sports ever pursue exclusive licenses when not presented to them (for example, FIFA, the Premier League, Bundesliga, and rumors re: the NBA)?

    5) How do you address the belief of many gamers that exclusive licensing is a net negative for the development of sports gaming?

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is terrible news cause once this deal occured Madden has been garbage pretty much. Even though with him at the lead I have some hope I guess.

But I would really would like to have seen what 2k could have done next gen with the NFl game. They seem to capture player authenticity pretty well. And would have been nice to see the Nfl game with signature stuff for certain players.

Question: What is the future of Head Coach? and will their be one this year?

Ask him about all the trouble with the glitches, and unplayability of Franchise Mode (until the patch came out) of Madden 08, and what he’s going to do to ensure that there aren’t any game breaking glitches in Madden 09. It just seems to me, that with the NFL extending the exclusive license, that EA will be able to get even lazier with their product…which doesn’t fair well for all of us who had severe problems with 08 this year.

  15. Mark on February 12th, 2008 11:33 am Quote

Why don’t they use ESPN? 2K did a great job of integrating an actual broadcast in the game!

Will they get rid of that annoying radio announcer?

Will there be referees on field? Chain gang? Better Sidelines?

Better throwing, running animations? Very robotic looking…

Will madden football ever be very good again?

Why am I having more fun playing all-pro football from 2K which cost me $10, then I ever had playing madden?

  16. Mark on February 12th, 2008 11:35 am Quote

Do you know what a football game should look like and play like? Everyone else at EA hasn’t figured it out yet!

How about signature animations? I want to see quarterbacks with player-specific releases….

Pasta can you ask what is the possibilities of just scrapping the whole next gen engine and porting over the Ps2/xbox version (with upgraded graphics of-course).

To me it seems like this new engine has set them back big time. But when I pop in the ps2 version the game is amazingly fun. And not broken.

pasta must love this news even though it’s absolute garbage for gamers.

ask him to make a sim football game for hardcore fans, and tell him madden is over-rated and very glitchy every year guaranteed.

ask him what he has to say to all the people that hate the exclusive deal.

I didn’t even rent madden this year because the demo showed me it was ‘07 all over again.

  20. Details on February 12th, 2008 1:02 pm Quote

    A lot of great questions.

Please, Pasta, press him on these issues.

Year after year, Madden won’t add OBVIOUS features. Why? We get arcade-like weapon icons and no referees on the field. Flash over substance. That’s a bad approach to making a sports game. Why should we believe Madden 09 will be any different?

just got done with the call. We talked for over 20 minutes. So what I’m going to do is post up some of the topics that were talked about here shortly, then hopefully by later tonight the recording will be ready and people can just listen to the entire thing.
