Yeah I expected it to be stronger. Either they paid all that money to Don King (1+ million) and couldn’t spend it on the fighters or the next Fight Night tied up most of the big names. It definitely would take a hardcore boxing fan to recognize most of these names (the current fighters).

I know, suuuuuch a disappointment. LOL. Ever occured to you that Prizefighter is actually trying to cater to REAL boxing fans? Notice that this roster is actually considerably bigger than FNR3’s, which had 25 licensed fighters? Then you to fill up the weight divisions, they had 2 De La Hoyas, 2 Holyfields, 2 Toneys, 3 Roy Jones Jr’s, 2 Barreras, 2 Morales’s, 2 Gatti’s, 2 Robinsons, 3 Durans, 2 Ray Leonards.

The trailer was impressive to say teh least. The environmet and crowd was alive. Hooded/non hooded robes, refs, movement was good. Although the roster doesnt have big name, this is a must buy for me. Real boxing sim to say the least.

    Okay,

Let me preface my comments with a hope that this game has some ridiculously good story/career elements and a decent control scheme.

Now, based on this roster, and the fact that button mashing just doesn’t cut it in boxing games (for me at least), does this look to anyone else like its going to be a complete 2K flop.

Lets start from the top. There are only 2 legends in sports that deserve to have their names be associated with a sports title, and Don King, certainly is not one of them. I’m talking about John Madden, and to an extent, Tony Hawk. Just the fact that 2K would be silly enough to think that Don King is somehow going to help them sell video games is hilarious. The man (IMO) is a crook (to say the least) and really isn’t relavent in the world of sports. And they drop this roster of of nobodys? I watch HBO boxing every single time that its on, and I can only recognize about 1/3 of these names.

The flip-side to this story might have to do with exclusivity liscenses…and how (IMO) they absolutely kill the sports gaming industry. I get it from a business standpoint, but from a strictly consumer standpoint it just brings the potential for the best sports gaming content and experineces yet, to a complete standstill.

With some decent names associated with it, this title would have, at-least, gotten my attention. At this point, I am struggling to see how this game can overcome itself and become a success.

I think the story mode is pretty intriguing. You can even get the feel of how that is going to go from the trailer. The footage makes it look like its not very fluid, in the same way Fight Night wasn’t, but I’ll have to see actual gameplay instead of replay footage first before making a determination on that.

  12. The Saint on April 12th, 2008 12:22 am Quote

All fanboyism aside, the trailer was emphasizing the side-stepping aspect of Prizefighter, which 2K is obviously proud of. However everytime it was shown in the trailer, it was in slo mo, which broke the fluidity and made it look exaggerated.

  14. pastapadre on April 12th, 2008 1:11 am Quote

I meant to add that they’re probably going to market the game from the story mode perspective. So having a bunch of real current fighters isn’t as important for that reason. Even the trailer gave that feeling. Personally I think its kinda cool and thats what I’d be excited about the game for. I just can’t get excited about the roster of real fighters.

Wow, I thought that all of the fighters were made up except for the Legends, but those are all real fighters? Wow. The game LOOKS good, but lets see how it plays. I was almost suckered into buying APF 2K8 because it LOOKED good.

Uhh Pasta, have you heard anything about Fight Night Round 4? LOL! No but on a serious note I thought the trailer looked ok. I don’t think it quite matches up to Fight Night graphically. I was a little dissapointed with the roster but it will do. 2k always banks on their gameplay & attention to detail which is why I’ll give them the benifit of the doubt & buy the game when it comes out. I really hope the gameplay is superb because like I said the graphics aren’t matching EA. If 2k is going to put the money up to produce a boxing title, especially considering their current buy out situation & dropping titles to save money, then it better be as good if not better than EA’s title or else this could be the beginning of the end of 2kSports as we know it.

  18. The Night Owl on April 12th, 2008 4:16 pm Quote

As long as this game is TRUE SIM and not like that garbage Fight Night Round 3, i can do without the big names. The roster is solid but not spectacular, but 2K is known for great gameplay and that’s what they’re banking on for this game.

Yeah, Larry Holmes , Joe Louis, Archie Moore, Rocky Marciano, Floyd Patterson. Nothing but All-Time greats and Hall of Famers.

Joe Calazaghe: Unbeaten 168lb Champion, Top ten pound for pound fighter

Kelly Pavlik: Unbeaten 160lb Champion, top ten pound for pound fighter.

I wouldn’t call everyone on the list “BUMS”

They also have some good young talent on the roster. Personally, i think it’s refreshing to not have the same old tired names from Fight Night. It’s a new game so why not have some current new talent.

Play your cards right and your career will take you from Atlantic City to the Bright Lights of Vegas and ultimately to the Heavyweight Champion of the world.

    This sounds good too:

    * 22 arenas including the Garden, Trump Taj Mahal & Boardwalk.

    * Boxer adreneline and the crowd factor into your shots. Also there seems to be an emphasis on angles and footwork.

Just because Don King promotes someone doesn’t mean they are required to be completely associated with everything he does. 2K on paid for Don King’s name and likeness only for the title of the game; but he’s only a promoter, not an agent. The boxers/agents choose who they want to promote the fights. Much less, you can name guys on that list who AREN’T promoted by Don King.

On a side note, seeing as FNR3 hit Greatest Hits recently, it’s likely that they would have already signed certain boxers up to be in the next iteration. The list isn’t bad, as there are definitely some quality boxers and contenders in there. I guess I personally would have rather seen Calzaghe show up in a Fight Night game.

I was drunk and for got that Tarver is doe, Roy Jones is over 40 and done, James toney is fat and also done, I spelled hatton wrong and forgot that his future is questionable, winky’s knee’s are done and he is also boring to watch mostly and done, bernard is uber-boring and dirty and should be done forever especially after next weekend,

prize fighter not only has more boxers, but more current CHAMPIONS- In FN round 3 i had to creat Wlad, and Calzaghe as well as many others. The list of fighters is better than any other boxing game, so I cannot be dissapointed and I’m sorry for being an utter moron

  29. The Saint on April 14th, 2008 10:33 am Quote

In all fairness to FNR3, it has a solid engine. If the only thing FNR4 does is to get rid of the parrying, FNR4 would be 10x better.

  30. The Saint on April 14th, 2008 10:42 am Quote

Also, to me the biggest problem I anticipate Prizefighter will have is some awkwardness in the controls. It might not be as accessible as the FN games and could have to force players to do some awkward button combinations involving the shoulder buttons, but that’s it.

PS3’s got a heck of a lot more going for it than the Dreamcast. I think the main reason it was excluded for Prizefighter are the extra costs that 2K Sports can’t really afford. Too potential problems. It’s hard enough to make a brand new game with a brand new engine to work for the 360,let alone for the PS3, known for how difficult it is to make games for. Also, I’ve said this a dozen times, but the ONLY solution to button mashing is a realistic stamina model. Players should be able to throw as many punches as physically possible. The problem with FNR3 was it’s possible to throw 150 punches per round without getting tired. Players should be able to button-mash, and pay the price.

Pasta, button-mashing has nothing to do with the control scheme, when referring to these boxing games. Even if you use TPC in FNR3, you can still “button mash.” Button mashing is being able to punch at unrealistically high rates without any consequence. If a player wants to throw 200 punches in one round, he should be able to but then suffer the consequence of punching himself out. In FN 2004, at least there was a realistic punch output and when you threw flurry after flurry, you will reach the point where you can only throw one punch at a time.

Now if EA only spent a small fraction of what they spend on advertising, on actual gameplay research and development, there’d be no incentive for them to buy out 2K. Madden is a broken game, especially the last one. EA’s only true competition is 2K Sports when it comes to the sports gaming division, where 2K embarrasses EA year after year after year. How does EA respond? By monopolizing the sport. If EA ever gets the monopoly, EA employees like you should celebrate, but it will mark the end of sports videogames as the consumers will have nothing but garbage.

Actually I liked the kicking stick in APF and would like to see a form of that instituted for Madden/NCAA where the kicking game has always been too easy. Did you even read my impressions after playing APF?

I also didn’t like the pitching stick in MVP NCAA Baseball. I think it felt pretty natural in Fight Night although I’ll say again I was not a huge fan of the game overall.

I tend to like the stick for secondary things (like freestyle moves in Live) as opposed to relying on it for the main actions.

i have seen another roster on wikipedia and other sites. and it has mayweather and tyson and so on. but i heard some of the names will be fake. and ali is in it along with foreman. but they dont have mosley and cotto even oscar and hopkins. they took all the people from fight night out. and put al the people in. they need both combined. they should have downloads available for updates and suff. this will be a good career. but it seems a little cheasy like fight night. the trailers fihting looked gay. graphics are alright. this was supposed to be a sim.. i hope it is

When does this game come out in the UK?

I also think that the roster is pretty good but there are a few big time fighters that are needed such as:
    -Klitchsko
    -Mayweather
-Hatton(even tho hes not that good)
    -Jermain Taylor
    -De la Hoya
    -Cotto
    -Trinidad

the list above by the way is of jus present fighters
i think that these shud be some legend names on the roster:
    -Foreman
    -Tyson
    -Gatti
    -Barrera
    -Lennox Lewis
    -Ali
    -Sugar Ray Leonard
    -Jake Lamotta

i will defenatly buy this game becuz i am a big boxing fan i just hope it does not dissapoint me.

well, i gotta add a little critisism to this new 2k game.. graphics, story, gameplay looks great, but, like everyone else, the roster is so terrible.. no de la hoya, sugar ray lenard, roburto duran, bernard hopkins, james tony, jake lamatta, sugar ray ROBINSON, jermain taylor, or anyone else that is great that i might have missed.. how can you forget them?! i mean, de la hoya just fought may 3, he still around today and by far a fan favorite.. this game would be the ultimate boxing game if those fighters were included in the “classic fighters” list.. they take out some and add george forman, mike tyson, lennex lewis.. and a few other great names, which im excited to try out, but it is almost depressing that they didnt include some of the fighters that MADE the sport.. sugar ray leonard was the muhammad ali of the welterweight devision.. no rivalry fight between hearns and leonard i guess.. just sucks. i will be adding another forum as soon as i try the game of course.. but i agree with the other 90% of you out there that are PISSED about the roster too.. lol kinda a joke

First off, EA does not make better sports game, they’re just good at marketing….and if you pay closely attention to Live and Madden, the only thing that changes is slight gameplay and features, which take away from the graphics. EA wants to monopolize. For example, NCAA football can’t include a simple aspect of the game such putting a referee on the field for gameplay. And how long has that game been out? I’m assuming those who say the list for prizefighter is WEAK are those who don’t know boxing plus I think the whole thing about including legend fighters is stupid and boring, WE WERE NOT BORN THEN. The middleweights in this game are GOOD, SOLID fighters. This list is better than Fight Night line up. Maybe FN graphics are better but I bet the gameplay of Prizefighter is better. FN3 was a good game but the fall and knockouts were not real!!!! I’m sure FN may be better but don’t be pissed at a roster when you don’t know the sport.

This roster of fighters looks very good to me and is not whats concerning me! ( Prizefighter has a great list of fighters that are actually still fighting!)

However I highly doubt this will be anywhere near as polished as Fight Night. Say what you will about the very unrealistic counter mechanic, its the best boxing game that has ever been created.

The guys who are devoping this also made the Rocky games on Xbox. They were decent and playable then but far from impressive.

Fight Night has a gameplay mechanic which works! The only aspects that this game can exceed fight night on external stuff. Such as a better CAB, deeper career, more arenas and more fighters! Also better mini games for the training! ect All this plus a decent gameplay mechanic will equal a good experience!

I HOPE I AM PROVEN WRONG AND THE GAME TURNS OUT TO BE GREAT BUT IM CALLING IT NOW! THIS GAME WILL SUCK!!
