NCAA Football 09 full drive video
May 15, 2008 by pastapadre

IGN has released a video of a full drive in NCAA Football 09 as Boston College takes the ball down the field on BYU. The video runs for approximately 4 1/2 minutes and can be viewed here (make sure to watch in high-res).
The game looks to have been tightened up some from the build we played a few weeks ago. It is really difficult to judge though until getting hands-on time to actually compare the feel. That really can’t be analyzed much through the videos especially in short bursts where the circumstances such as difficulty level are unknown. A couple things to point out is the missed arm tackle on the early run and the diving catch at the end, both of which look really natural.
This is the most substantial gameplay footage released thus far. Be sure to leave your thoughts on the video in the comments.

It’s IGN in case anyone can’t get the video link to work
I wish we could make a game this good.
Dissapionted that there were no footprints left in the snow like madden
Game looks really sweet…
Um, were sure thats NCAA 09? If there were any changes they were, at best, minuscule. Its good to know that EA has made absolutly NO worthy changes to the presentation, i mean no one wants solid in-game presentation. I actually think Madden will be the better game this yr and i thought NCAA 08 was like a step away from being great. Cant say im shocked tho.
You may have noticed in the video that the teams have an option of different sock types i saw some low mid and high socks not huge but its better than nothing I guess.

Thank christ for that, too. I was beginning to think that maybe they had wasted all their development time working on gameplay issues.
This is disappointing to say the least. I wasnt impressed
I almost think EA is just f’ing with us. I mean they cant be serious. Im praying that that video is just an early, “sped up” build, i mean that really looks no different than NCAA 08, same player animations, same player celebrations, same commentary. For the most part, i enjoyed NCAA 08 on the 360. I thought it was a solid improvement over NCAA 07 and thought EA was just a stones throw away from having a great football game with an atmosphere that would just suck you in and keep u there for hours. I mean i remember hearing the reps at EA boasting how 08 had the smoothest gameplay ever and that they really had the gameplay where they wanted it and once i played it, i thought so too, so i said to myself all they have to do is give me a big time college presentation and they have a winnner! I mean, for me, all they had to do was give me a better presentation, just draw me into the experience a little bit more and id be set. Going by that video(and i admit thats probably not a true indication of what the game will feel like once i actually try it) it looks as if they literally just sat on their hands and watched the calender waiting to push out NCAA 08 with a new 09 sticker slapped on it. Again, I’m not at all surprised, i mean its EA after all, but that still doesn’t keep me from being bummed.
Its lookin good. I was a little iffy about him being able to complete 4th and long out of i-form with a crossing route, looked to me like it should have not been completed(but no big deal). And tha letearl pass WTF was that, that was real weird. Another thing im hating is the same old comm. its been tha same since 03, come on EA get some new lines or new people. Im not bashing the game, im a huge fan of NCAA football, im gonna buy it, but there still things to fix.
No comment until I can see more gameplay detail and get some more info from Pasta about the games new features.

I agree totally. Where’s that “college atmosphere” they’ve been touting?
i watched the video. there are some good things but also some bad things. I like the arm tackles but again like the madden video there didnt seem to be any new animations for tackling, and only one or two gang tackles wen those should be happening nearly every play. the weather looked very good but i to noticed no footsteps. the crowd appeared the be the same as last year, and the lighting didnt look like what they have said it would look like. the presentation was nearly the exact same thing as well, which is a big disappointment for me. im tired of the same angled camera shot from the sidelines swooping in from the stand to just show the same crowd over and over again. The cheerleaders and mascot were nice touches, and the player models look very nice at this point. another thing that bothered me was no pump up the crowd. I though they said that was coming back, that home field advantage was coming back, i figured we would see a little bit of it during the game. gameplay seemed pretty smooth but eerily similar to last years. alright not a great video but certainly not horrible. there were a few good points but hopefully this is still way early in the process and they can show off these other “announced” features that seem to be vacant so far from the game.
yeah this game sounded sweeter when you read about it now that we actually see it it doesn’t look to great but it is an early build so hopefully it will get better and probably will. I will buy it anyway though.
hey pasta can you let me know and other people too because to me the player models seem to have their pads like shoved up to their necks if you look at the new pictures on operation sports it might be just me but are they going to stay like that?
all i have to say is bring on Madden going off that video. That video just made me mad knowing i have this game reserve paid off already.Im going to cross my fingers to hope to see better but as of right now im pissed
what kills me the biggest thing about college football in real life presentation wise in real life is college gameday pre game show.Im wondering with the espn barnd under there belt y they havn’t used that.Im tired of hearing Corso same old lines get these dudes in the studio and make more lines for the game.If im not mistaking these games hold more space then PS2 disc so keep half of the old comments and make ton of new ones.I mean NCAA football is big on ESPN this is the game where the ESPN contract should be use the most.
It was ok.
Pasta, if this is a later build than the one you played then it seems as if they have fixed the following:
-Fewer shots of the cheerleaders
-Fixed the INT issue.
I know it is hard to tell from that video, but it seems as if EA is listening and doing some tweeking.
One thing I noticed, after the play ends, the play clock starts at 40 seconds. However, after a few seconds the play clock goes down to 25 seconds.
Am I missing something in the NCAA new ruling, or is this an EA glitch??
Thanks

Same player animations?…Couldn’t disagree more. I think they look fantastic on both sides of the ball. I do, however, see what you’re saying about the presentation. I expected better, but I’ll reserve final judgement until I see a bit more. I think it would have been more beneficial to have seen a drive in a better environment (i.e. the swamp).
Oh, and online dynasty? SOLD!

If the game doesnt get any better, dont buy it dude. You can cancel your pre-order. I mean im not saying cancel based off of this video, but why do some of you, even tho you are dissapointed in the game, insist on purchasing it any way???
Pasta I noticed there was a pop-up that said slide protection B to cancel. What is slide protection/how does it work?

They added cheerleaders… Duh. Don’t you know that that is what college football is all about? /Sarcasm
Its not that early in developement anymore that excuse is gone that game is basically finished what you saw is what your going to get they may add the teams logo on the cheerleading outfits but thats about it (haha) yeah the brainiacs at ea left that off I mean how hard could it be but i guess its really hard oh wait they did it on the old gen version ncaa 09 is madden 08 lets just face it no need to dodge around it and im sure most of you agree. Lets see no refs no logos on the cheer outfits and i think pasta said during bowl games no patches or field logos and no college gameday even though they have the guys for it they just gon show maybe 3 highlights at the end of the game that probably wasnt the top 3 plays anyway I mean im gon buy it cause there is no other option but what do we really have to look forward to updated rosters? Well the new running style is great but why run an 80 yard run and fumble b4 you get to the end zone (EA)
good animations looks like you can really run, if you ever played football in real life u see how this is closer to the real thing cutbacks your agile. ncca 08 felt like running with your grandmother but this it looks you are a D1 athlete
the real presentation will be seen at the begginging and end and well see
NEW PLAYS
idk if its just me but lookin through that playbook i was excited brand new plays!
people complain way too much about the commentary. there isnt an infinite amount of catch phrases to use with every single play.
yes you’d like it to sound more natural, but aside from getting multiple announcers which i think would be a waste of resources anyway, i dont think 50 or however many new lines makes much difference in the grand scheme of enjoyment.
As long as I can run the spread option with the Oregon Ducks, I’ll buy the game!!! But seriously… I dunno, it looks “okay” from that video. I would like to see more game play videos in better weather though. I think the game is going to do well because of the Online Dynasty feature, the roster sharing, and the wide open running game.
I just feel that year in and year out, EA Sports concentrates on the wrong things. I’d like to see more attention to detail. Like some of you have said, no patches on jerseys at bowl games/ field paint at bowl games. Also the repetitive analyst dialog. We’ve been hearing the same ‘ole crap for 5 years!! How is that not a main focus to the realism of the game!?!? And what about eye black? Why wasn’t that in ‘08?? I hope they pay attention to the small things in ‘09.
Like most of you, I WILL buy the game this summer. Without the Online Dynasty, or sharable rosters though, this game looks a lot like ‘08. But I’m still excited to run Chip Kelly’s spread option attack with my Oregon Ducks! (oh, and they better have added their ALL BLACK UNIFORM!!!) Pasta, can you confirm Oregon’s all black uni?

Im with you here. If you’ve been reading the posts lately it I have been sticking with NCAA over Madden every year since the new gen thing. But this year I am keeping NCAA 08 and Madden might be the better game.
I think for me, the new broadcast team and presentation will make it a fresh new experience mainly because I just have not been playing Madden. NCAA 09 game play looks very similar to 08, except the linebacker’s reflexes seem toned down a little. that first near int was the players fault. The new player models look excellent now.
I dont think it showed the features off well at all
Looks good.
That particular video was hard to get a good read on the game from….I can definitely understand why sopme of the comments are saying it did not look very different from 2008. I’m somewhat at a loss here because the other clips on IGN - the ones that play during the video interview with the producer (showing FSU-Cal and USC-LSU clips) look remarkably different to me than that latest clip.
At the very least, that clip did not do much in the way of showing off the game in a positive light…
Very disturbing things:
- that funky lateral to the OL…it was bad enough in 2008 to see the QB making perfectly placed late pitches all the time…but RB’s too?!?!??!
- the 4th down attempt that was completed to a covered receiver…it did not bother me so much that the 4th down attempt was successful as it did that that play - the slants from I-Norm have ALWAYS had the exact same damn issue - the routes on the WR and the TE ALWAYS run into each other, EVERY SINGLE TIME for the last 8 years!!!! The WR route should be run deeper than the TE route and the two players should not end up in the same spot all the time, every time. This more than anything else I saw was disappointing because it shows a lack of fixing things that have been pointed out to the developers more than once already.
Videos can be used to show off specific animations, and the diving TD catch was certainly a nice new one, but like the spectacular catches and the bobbling catches and the sideline “keep-the-feet-in” catches, these things tend to happen so often in the game that they get old fast. I like to see it in the game, but will it be enough to kep the game fresh into October and November (not that it matter that much to me since I am still playing NCAA 2008 now anyway!!!).
I will have to spend some serious time with practice mode and the replay camera to see something more definitive…it remains disappointing though that the default gameplay camera is static, unchanged and uncheangeable since Madden NFL 2006 for god’s sake! I know that there are many, many complaints about missing features and the slow pace of returning older ones and even frivilous missing details, but the absence of multiple, selectable and user-defined playable cameras is the top of the list.
I will of course buy the game because despite its shortcomings I still find a way to enjoy the game and get my $60 worth of entertainment value from it every year and then some…it just remains disappointing to see the game stuck in a slow evolution instead of a ground-breaking revolution on this hardware generation. I doubt that a slew of gameplay refinements and online dynasty alone can change that.
That was terrible. That was NCAA 08. It was. And if there were new animations, they were the same as last year. EA is a joke. Please, some company make a college football game for competition sake!
Is Pasta not gonna speak on this?
billy wrote:
you obviously dont pay attention to detail. there are numerous new animations in this game.
Something that we all fail to realize is that the atmosphere at BC is not the same at LSU, Auburn, FSU, TENN (examples of home stadiums in other videos) they clearly had excellent home field advantage. Maybe EA is trying to show that it can show off different types of atmospheres. I dont was the atmosphere at Florida Atlantic to be the same as Florida State’s.
Also, I do agree though that the video did nothing but shed negativety over the game.
Pasta is not going to speak too badly on this because EA is his bread and butter (wink, wink)..Sorta of like the issue with NBA Live how much he touted it as being a good game, but due to contract interests could not mentioned anything good about the superior NBA 2K8 game.
It’s not his fault though, it’s just business..
What’s with the BC qb wearing that bulky lineman facemask???

man u go have to change your name man

slide protections is the offensive line sliding to the left or right to help protect the qb if u getting pressure from the right alot then slide your protection to that side and vice versa to the other side thats how that works hoped that answered your question.
pasta idk but it looks like ncaa 09 has that action cam like madden where u can see the whole field and all your recievers anybody agree?
Game looks terrible- same thing as 08. Honestly if I didn’t know that was 09 and saw it on youtube or IGN I would have thought it was 08.
Would it kill EA to put some effort into the presentation of the game? Why is it that entire drive we saw no statistical overlays, no drive summaries, and no instant replay + commentary on that amazing catch in the endzone?
Apparently we all were misinformed about our next gen consoles. Like someone stated earlier aren’t we supposed to have more storage than our PS2 versions of the game? So how come those games are hands down better playing, and have 10 times the content then what we are getting now? Is it really that hard to upgrade the graphics to hi-def, polish things up, and keep all the old content in the game?
Not quite sure how games like Mass Effect, COD4, and MGS4 are made, yet somehow we can’t even get a sports game with alternate jerseys, bowl patches, or any 1 of the dozens of features NCAA PS2 used to have.
i mean come on man it does look like ncaa 08.( with better snow) no footprints. same ol presentation. ahhhhh
Madden 09 looks better. Hooray for ActionCam.
Terrible. Not going to waste my time on the game. Use the be the only game I ever played. Sucks that EA just stopped trying to work on the game. All they’ve done is taken Madden and typed in new team names. Glad I kept my old PS2 and previous versions of the game so I can get a football fix during the season.
What’s up with the mascot game coming back but still no FCS teams?

definitely looks like it to me. this is very exciting for me and I even played 08 on an hdtv.
I swear that diving catch at the end was the same diving catch from last gen madden smh.

agreed! how many times can lee corso say “that was an excellent catch!”
and ea did add the post game show highlights, but they just havent shown it yet.
they just need to work on the pre-game stuff and it’ll be alright i guess. still, gameplay and graphics are what is more important.

lol, feel sorry for you. anyone that pays attention can see how much better the gameplay is on 09 than 08. but w/e. stick with your 08 (laughs).

please don’t get me started on facemasks!!! EA has refused to implement the new revolution iq facemasks, and CONTINUES to give quarterbacks those bulky (peyton manning/tennessee) face masks…so stupid!!
i think blake mitchell was the last loser to wear a similar one…thank goodness he graduated.
Same ol pile of crap they’ve been putting out for 8 years now. PLEASE let a meteor slam into the EA office and kill everyone inside.
I noticed they added BC’s zone blocknig scheme which is nice.
You guys are retarded. NCAA looks so much better than Madden. Every year Madden says, “Oh yeah this and that is going to be so great and revolutionary!” and every year it dissapoints.
I played Madden 08for a total of 2 weeks and I got bored. Then I get excited again for it this year and I read that you can only play an Online season for one year. How retarded is that?
Madden sucks and it will suck for a very long time until 2K can get an NFL liscense. When Madden actually had competition, it was good. NCAA has always been good and has always been way more addicting than madden.
Madden will get all the publicity but it will never deliver on how good it should be.
FtnFresh wrote:
u can’t really base that on 08 madden producer is actually putting in work this year. And from the look of things graphics wise madden is looking better. Also it looks like madden producers is finally putting in more effort. I’m a NCAA fan but I’m not liking what I’m seeing gameplay wise.
I agree that the game sounded the same and the lack of footprints is a let down.
Hopefully, the game plays better that it looks…
Dear EASports Football Development Teams,
I have watched all of the videos of the upcoming game Madden 09, as well as looked at all the photos that that are available. I have noticed a common theme. The player models have not been improved for the past 3 years of next-generation Madden games. QBs, Halfbacks, Defensive-backs, Wide Receivers are all either the same size or larger than the defensive-linemen that are in these games. I watch football religiously. I have also played football on a college level and this is just one of the many things that bother me about Madden and NCAA Football Video games. EA claim is that “IF IT”S IN THE GAME, its IN THE GAME.” This is a bunch of bull. Wide receivers, Defensive Backs, etc should not be as big are bigger than Defensive Linemen. Get rid of the “Shaking Pursuit Camera” and spend more time on player models and game play problems. Who’s ever idea it was to change the play selection screen to a one play selection needs to be fired. If the average person did something that idiotic, they would be searching for work in another country. Not at EA. That is enough of my ranting for now. The people that this is for will probably never see this, or read it anyway. Please EASports, fix these problems.
Let’s not forget that this is the only full-drive video we’ve seen… I wouldn’t count this game out just yet. I bet this game will be worth the $60 bones everyone drops to buy it, and then some. With all the last minute tweaks and add on’s that EA does in the last few months of production, we’re likely to see an entirely different aspect of game-play. I’m not saying this will be the best game ever made, but I don’t think it’s gonna be as bad as we all are claiming it will be. Let’s at least wait to see a few more videos before we declare an all out war on the EA Sports Studio!!!
-Go Ducks!
twistanutz22… sorry they dont got the all black unis… they got the emerald green/black, white/white, white/black, and yellow top/ ?? (pants havnt been revealed yet)
