NCAA Football 09 demo videos

June 20, 2008 by pastapadre

I went ahead and put together two videos from the NCAA Football 09 demo. The first is essentially a mash-up of some of the better plays in the first couple runs through the demo. The second is a full game start to finish. In both I am controlling LSU so I plan to add a user vs user video in the near future.

It is somewhat tough to compare the demo to the builds I played at the community events, mostly because I never played a single time on Varsity difficulty. As I get more time in I may be able to put some thoughts together. The general sentiment out there so far seems to be positive which despite the issues myself and others pointed out was the feeling of those who had the opportunity to play it at those events. You can continue leaving your impressions here or in the forum.

Continue on to watch the highlight video and head into the forums to watch the full game. If you have any videos of your own feel free to add them to that forum thread!

Pasta - Just so you know, the demo is from a build dated April 29. The build we played in NYC was from April 18.

  3. pastapadre on June 20th, 2008 7:16 am Quote

Makes sense. They made a lot of adjustments pretty much immediately after we gave our feedback.

I played it last nite and thought it was great… I usually only buy madden.. but witht he online dynasty feature i may buy NCAA as well

So this is thr build after you guys gave them your input??

  6. pastapadre on June 20th, 2008 7:50 am Quote

Its tough to say. Its a few days after, and I know they got right into making adjustments after we gave our feedback. But I can’t say whether this build is reflective of that feedback given the circumstances of a demo. It could just as well be the natural progression of the game being in development during that period where a week or two can show drastic improvement. Also consider that I played primarily head to head which I haven’t been able to do with the demo yet.

I hope this isn’t the game after the tweaks were made.

Well I can say the build we played in NYC was much more “wide open” than this one, and this is on varsity compared to the all-american which was what we mostly used.

    I agree.

That’s real funny!! I was thinking the same thing like damn maybe I’m losing my skills because I was expecting to blow the CPU out. I didn’t even come close to doing it.

  13. Dre on June 20th, 2008 8:24 am Quote

Well I blew Ohio State out twice lost 17-10 on a slant pass the last play of the game and beat them 30-24 in overtime.

I saw the weirdest glitch when I was playing the demo earlier today. I scored a touchdown and went for two(I was LSU). I threw a INT on the 2 point conversion and while Osu was returning it my guy committed a face mask. Then to sum it all up OSU kick the ball off to me even though I was the one that scored the td.

  15. KPage on June 20th, 2008 8:36 am Quote

I downloaded the demo on both systems and even though Ive been playing it on the 360 ever since it first been out I found it easier on the PS3. Varsity is a tad bit different this year. Looks like i wont be able to jump right into all american like i do every year….

i dunno if it was just me but i really wasn’t to geek about the demo .I was impress with a few things but it felt like the same type of game nothing really stood out.I can”t really judge it as a whole cuz its a demo and it was on varsity.I need to see the game on the highest difficulty.Passing game was way to easy i hope the game is not to wide open or i will see a lot of high score games.I saw enough to convinence me to buy the game but i want to really see the real game.Based on this I got a feeling Madden is going to be the football game to have this year between NCAA and NFL.

yes the passing game was really easy everytime i threw like a 20 or 40 yard pass it was always caught hopefully on the hardest the game is more challenging

Haven’t heard anything on that, so I can only speculate and I wouldn’t expect it before NCAA releases.

  25. Josh on June 20th, 2008 10:18 am Quote

Do you guys think that maybe the reason the running game is a little difficult is because Ohio State & LSU both have top notch run stopping defenses? I love the passing game but the running game seems a little harder. It’s almost as if the controls are too responsive. I noticed my running back doing cuts & jukes when I barely moved the stick. Don’t get me wrong I love the new gameplay but I think it’s going to take some time getting used to. I’m sure slider adjustments will help too.

  26. Keith on June 20th, 2008 10:53 am Quote

I can’t believe this game stlll only has one camera angle. No matter how fresh a coat a paint the graphics have received, it’s still the same old stale experience for me. Looks like another year of no football gaming for me.

  28. three9yaheard on June 20th, 2008 11:14 am Quote

alot of people are saying the game is harder but i put up 28 n 35 points most of the time i play n the running game is easier to me i get at least 4-5 yards a carry so i guess those saying the running game is hard are looking for 50 yard gains everytime instead of moving the ball.

  29. JUDA on June 20th, 2008 11:39 am Quote

if you run up to some of the other players that are in the endzone. you should be able to do a team celebration. plus i noticed a switch hands glitch. everytime i chang hands to do a stiff arm the ball glitches back and forth til i press the stiff arm button again

  30. Broncos_Fan on June 20th, 2008 11:57 am Quote

I’m not gonna lie, I think this will be the first time that I’m hyped about both madden and ncaa football. The only gripe I have with this is the stiff running and I have trouble breaking tackles. Other than that, i think it’s pretty much perfect.

hmmm…i didn’t think the game was difficult…i’ve played five games…and i gave up a field goal in one game…and gave up a touchdown in another game….and the rest were shutouts…i had a few athletic interceptions…and i had no difficulty running the ball (i played as OSU if that makes a difference)…its hard to know excact stats except for when they show up at the right side of the score overlay…but in most games i think i was averaging 6 or 7 yards a carry…maybe people don’t use the lead blocking feature…but i think it makes the running game incredibly easy if you take advantage of it…

  32. Jonathon on June 20th, 2008 12:11 pm Quote

FYI…i know this is VARSITY…but i had several games where i had no more than one or two incomplete passes…this was a little disheartening…especially playing against a strong defense like LSU…though this could just be the difficulty level…also screen passes…namely the HB Slip play (not sure of the exact name)…but the blockers set up almost too well…and the play was almost ALWAYS good for a huge gain….again though…i am sure on a higher difficulty then there may be a different result…

Well in my impressions from both events this was something very evident even on higher difficulty levels. From the first event to the second I saw more inaccurate passes, but still a patient offense can pick apart the defense and be very efficient. The high completion % will be the norm.

The high completion rate will be the norm since, us experienced players know what’s coming, know how the Db’s and LB’s react to passing plays, so we can easily pick apart the “D”. When I play the Computer, I never say “I wonder what they’re gonna throw at me….Blitz? Drop back? QB spy?” I wish I would. To a certain degree…I wish the CPU was unpredictable at play calling.

What’s up with the little quiz after throwing a pick? How does gaining/losing composure affect the quarterback’s play; are stat points reduced?

  41. pastapadre on June 20th, 2008 1:59 pm Quote

Cool to see something on CL, though it doesnt really have anything accompanying it saying how its improved this year. So I still think its probably just the camera adjustment which I noticed first hand, and the ability to stay in practice all week and not have to go through all those loading screens if you want. I think once again it’ll be better than Madden’s Superstar mode since it doesn’t have the distracting influence points.

I’ve got a number of different topics geared to add tonight and over the weekend. Spent a few hours playing the demo and getting these videos together though. So when I get a chance I’ll move on to those things.

PASTA PLEASE READ REGARDING GLITCH, there is a glitch, if you run “tight fake punt run” the computer makes the ball carrier jog extra slow, and you cant move the ball carrier at all Please notify EA about this thanks…..once again its “tight fake punt run”

  45. Whsbraves10 on June 20th, 2008 6:02 pm Quote

Maybe its a glitch maybe its not, but when I cover the ball, like to run someone over with Beanie Wells, sometimes they will just not tackle him and like 4 ppl will be around him and just running around him like they cant tackle him, and then I run for a TD. Or maybe Beanie is just that good.

The more I play the demo the more impressed I become. Things I have noticed (some are obvious so bare with me):

    1) Smooth 60 FPS framerate
    2) Catching animations are excellent (You can actually see the receiver extend his arms to bring a pass in
    3) Tackling and hitting animations (especially when the receiver is in the air) are realistic
    4) Crowd looks more defined (ala MLB The Show) — No more sprite based fans
    5) Too many damn cheerleader cutscenes (what about the band, crazed fans or coaches???)
    6) Tacklers reaching out to try and grab the jersey of the ball carrier
    7) Pass rush (especially CPU) is excellent 8) The Composure feature is a sweet addition and helps players (especially novice players) read defenses and learn what the players assignments are
    9) Commentary may be a bit recycled but that is not a bad thing in this game
    10) Haven’t seen any penalties in eight games

    Pasta,

Do you know if there will be team-specific entrances? If not, can you ask the developers why they would not include this? College football is about atmosphere and when Miami runs through the fog or Clemson rolls down The Hill, nothing adds more to the college atmosphere than these items……

    Can’t wait til the 15th………

well in real college football, The DE’s especially the LSU and OSU ones, are fast and those guys run like 4.6 and 4.7’s so it is very realistic and it should be rare that a running back just runs around the corner every time
