UFC 2009 unveiled

June 21, 2008 by pastapadre

The debut trailer and preview for UFC 2009 have just made their way out. The game, which has been in the works for quite some time, is set to release next spring.

The operative phrase that came up during discussion of the game was “Constant Control”, the idea being that a UFC fighter must constantly be aware of his surroundings and situation, and must be ready to act at a moment’s notice with a specific, contextual move, countermove, or defense.

I’ve always seen initial appeal in wrestling games but they’ve rarely kept my interest and usually been more frustrating than fun. UFC’s action could present a more enjoyable experience as long as everything flows together naturally. Continue on to watch the trailer which seems to show a lot of potential that could be realized.

I think it looks pretty good for being this early. Hopefully we see some good blood and face damage and something just looked weird to me with the punches and kicks. But i just got pretty excited about this game from the trailer

I prey and hope they focus on the counter moves and defensive parts of MMA.If they dont every fight will be a slugfest

Hehe, I started training MMA with Quinton here in Memphis, knowing him I know this is a dream come true to be prominently featured in a video game (not tooting my horn, just think it’s funny as much of a gaming fan he is).

The past MMA games from the US release of Pride to all the disappointing UFC games to the Japanese releases of K-1 and Pride have all been fun but it really looks like this one is ready to take the genre to the highest level.

Compare the trailer video from last year’s E3 and this video. They look completely different.

  8. pastapadre on June 21st, 2008 10:27 am Quote

They even stated last year that video wasn’t gameplay but it was CGI “target footage” meaning what they hoped to get the game to look like.

I think it looks pretty darn good for a first next-gen outing….I mean look how long EA has been doing Madden, and they have yet to capture “true-football” in many peoples opinion. Give the guys a chance. I think they are doing the right things.

First, I noticed the Muay Thai clinch, and it looked good. I love that Rampage slammed him on an armbar attempt. Most importantly, when was the last time someone showed you actual game footage, for a game that was so far out? I believe the guts they showed to do that, prove that they are going to have something special here.

yea I cant wait for this game just for the online play. If they have create a fighter in there then it will be a really good game because they still have over half a year to work on the game.

Only bad thing I can say is they need to ditch those generic punching sound effects. It sounds like a Batman Cartoon. I think they need to do some authentic sound capturing from fights.

If the gameplay is as good as that trailer looks then this could be a revolution in sports games in general. That trailer looked awesome!

the UFC is garbage…i can’t believe this is even a sport…what’s next bar-fighting…and then jumping high schoolers in an alley for their lunch money? the marketing hype behind the sport is unbelieveable…what was it a few weeks ago…when CBS aired some fights on prime time television…for a two or three hour broadcast there was only about 12 minutes of actual fighting…this is not a sport…this is cockfighting…

  29. CTROB on June 21st, 2008 4:49 pm Quote

Yeah, his ignorance was established when he compared the UFC to the garbage that Elite XC pumped out. This is why MMA purists downplayed that spectacle that they put together. It was complete garbage. Please don’t comment or speak on things that you are uneducated on, you sound like a bafoon.

To the guy with the Kimbo comment…

…that guy is a bumb, he is a youtube creation with no fighting skills.

I do hope that they have a huge roster of guys, there are sooooo many good fighters in MMA these days, if it’s anywhere below even 50 guys it will be an injustice!

…and NO KIMBO! …he isn’t even a UFC fighter, they wouldn’t put that pile in their league.

  33. jesse on June 22nd, 2008 12:00 pm Quote

…just read the article that says 80+ fighters, that’s AWESOME!

  34. KevMack2blu on June 22nd, 2008 10:11 pm Quote

What’s so great about the UFC? Dana White is an arrogant douchebag and they don’t market their fighters. Don’t let the Spike TV fool ya!!! ….and about Kimbo, he just needs some time in the gym(3 career MMA fights). So many guys are quick to call him a joke because he’s not in the UFC, but he’s got more personality than 90% of the guys in your beloved UFC and he’s tough. He could have tapped out when his head was being bowed to the mat against that earfreak on CBS, but he got up and kept fighting. If what happened in his last fight happens in his next fight then you can call him a joke, but don’t let Dana White make your mind up for you.

  35. jesse on June 23rd, 2008 9:44 am Quote

Yes Dana White is a kind of a loser, but the fighters in his league have way more personality, or whatever, than you give them credit for. But personality has nothing to do with being a great fighter. What makes Kimbo have such a great personality, because he will beat the heads of guys in, in a street fight. And he wears a huge gold fist around his neck. Or because he bodyguards for porn stars.

And to quote you “Don’t let Dana White make your mind up for you”, so don’t let him influence how you feel about the fighters in his league. Stop speaking form ignorance, and pull your head from your but, and know what the hell your talking about…

…and go watch another youtube video of kimbo punching a 175 pound loser to the ground.

  36. KevMack2blu on June 23rd, 2008 11:28 am Quote

Never said that Kimbo’s personality has anything to do with the way he fights, but if I’m going to shell out 50 bucks for a ppv, an intriguing personality or bigger than life figure in that event makes it easier to stomach. He has an interesting backstory with how he would have played college football at Miami had it not been for hurricane andrew displacing his family. The porn star bodyguarding is kinda cool if you’re into hot easy chicks, but that could just be me!!!

And to quote you “Don’t let Dana White make your mind up for you”, so don’t let him influence how you feel about the fighters in his league

Do you let Roger Goodell or David Stern influence how you feel about players in the NFL and NBA? The players or fighters are their own men and the type of people they are has nothing to do with a guy running a league. I judge guys by what I see, and not by what some guy running a league says, because they’re all snake oil salesman.

Hit me up when you graduate middle school. Congrats on that btw!!!

Oh yeah, the video for the UFC game is sweet, I will definately be pre-ordering that joint. Thank you Dana White.
