SCEA has always struggled in the area of online play with their MLB franchise. Whether it was the "traffic delays", lag plagued outings, or questionable design decisions there has always been something severely wrong. Early reports heading into release were not encouraging. Now that the game is out I've had additional time to evaluate the online play. Continue on to read through my observations and watch some video examples. (more...)...

The first roster update for MLB 09 The Show is now out after a short delay. This update includes 175 player movements and several name additions. Some of the changes are listed below but Ken Griffey Jr is now on the Mariners also. Manny Ramirez did not sign in time to make this update. It's likely we'll see the next one, which should be due out on Monday, include him and other more recent moves. Change Highlights: C Jason Varitek moved from Free Agent to Red Sox Position. 1B Brad Wilkerso...
  • The BIGS 2 Trailer
    by
    Posted March 4th, 2009 at 3:12 pm 20 Comments »
As mentioned last week a trailer arrived on copies of MLB 2K9 for the sequel to The BIGS. Ironically The BIGS is a game that had better graphics and played more sim in some ways than the MLB 2K franchise did and still does. It was one of the first sports games to offer an online co-op mode, which while limited was a lot of fun. The strategical elements were well done and the gameplay was very clean. While it is very much an arcade game it wasn't too over the top, just more of an exaggeration...

With MLB 2K9 out today I recorded a couple innings in HD and also decided to drop some early thoughts on the game. I'll have a more detailed "wrap-up" article in the coming days as well as a report focusing on the online play of both baseball titles. Continue on to watch the videos and read some of the initial impressions I have with the game. Needless to say things are not looking good. (more...)...
  • Installing MLB 2K9 to the Hard Drive
    by

When the NXE update for the 360 came out back in November I analyzed the benefits that were seen when installing games and playing them from the hard drive. You can check out those results here. That was apparently a popular feature as I have received numerous requests to do the same with MLB 2K9. While I can't speak yet to any marginal performance improvements that may or may not come with the install I did compare loading times for the game when played with the disc vs the hard drive. ...
  • More From MLB 09 The Show

    Posted March 1st, 2009 at 4:34 pm 394 Comments »
Before I get into more detailed discussions on MLB 09 The Show I decided to create a few more videos and a handful of screenshots. This is a lengthy process as the 6-10 minute videos take about two hours to upload and about as long to process and become HD. After this posting I will continue to include some videos but they will be more focused on a related topic. General impressions, an online play report (not good at all so far), and a "mini-review" will start to come tomorrow and throug...

Having received my copy of MLB 09 The Show on Saturday afternoon I worked to make sure I could at least get up some videos and a handful of screenshots. Further coverage in the way of impressions, online play thoughts, a deeper look at some features and more videos and screens will come beginning Sunday night. Continue on to see nine screenshots and four different videos in HD. If you have any screenshot or match-up requests feel free to leave them in the comments and I'll pull some of th...
  • Early Response to 2K9 and The Show Online Play
    by
    Posted February 28th, 2009 at 1:27 pm 122 Comments »
As a baseball gaming fan it was frustrating to have both games last year struggle with online play. MLB 2K8 offered arguably the worst online play for any sports game this generation and MLB 08 The Show was only slightly better as performance was extremely inconsistent. So going into this year both 2K and SCEA have discussed how they expect online to be better. In the case of MLB 09 The Show I still had the sense that there wasn't much confidence that they had actually fixed lag issues, t...
  • Gametrailers Looks Foolish With New Video
    by
    Posted February 26th, 2009 at 11:25 am 126 Comments »
The latest video posted up on Gametrailers features MLB 2K9 and is labeled as though it is just a normal video displaying gameplay footage. It turns out however that the person responsible for it just played it like an ass and posted it anyway. This is a video going out for everyone to see pre-release that doesn't properly represent the game and that is unfortunate. There is a certain amount of respect you should give a game when the opportunity to provide consumers with early looks or in...
  • Serious Problem With MLB 2K9 Franchise Mode Discovered (Updated)

    Posted February 26th, 2009 at 7:48 am 290 Comments »
As sites began receiving their copies of MLB 2K9 yesterday impressions have started flowing. The most alarming development however is the discovery of a major issue with franchise mode by Chase at Operation Sports. This is something that will negatively affect anyone who plays more than just the first year in franchise. You can start reading about the problem on this page of the forum thread and continue through it to follow further developments. What is happening is that CPU controlled t...
