The last thing EA Sports needed for NBA Live 13 was increased skepticism and negativity. That's exactly what they got however at E3 as report after report pegged Live as a let down - even ESPN called it the biggest disappointment at the event.  (more…)...

  • EA Sports Has Already Botched the Handling of NBA Live’s Return

Having become the underdog after years of eroding the fan base with sub-par releases and the aborted attempt at a reboot EA Sports is attempting a comeback with NBA Live 13. It will be an uphill battle to reestablish credibility and grow sales - one that really can't afford blunders along the way. Despite that they've already made one warranting serious criticism.  (more…)...

The announcement of the name going back to NBA Live, as well as the tagline of "The Future of Basketball", has stirred up a surprisingly high level of interest in EA Sports' return to a sim NBA offering. However there may be more to glean from the recent events that provide some clues into the company's plans for the franchise.  (more…)...
  • EA Sports Going Back to NBA Live Name

    Posted February 23rd, 2012 at 11:45 am 60 Comments
Last night I tweeted that the opportunity was there for EA Sports to start promoting their new sim NBA product by taking advantage of All Star Weekend. Not only will fans be engaged with the festivities and the sports media focused on the league but the Tiburon studio that is now developing the series is just minutes away from Orlando. Now that promotion, viral or otherwise, seems to have started as first noted by Kotaku. Cavs rookie and #1 pick Kyrie Irving tweeted that he was playing ...
  • Reevaluating Expectations: EA Sports NBA 13 and Challenging NBA 2K13
    by
    Posted February 16th, 2012 at 3:30 pm 70 Comments
There are less than eight months until the new crop of NBA games arrive - and after a two year absence that'll mean competition for 2K Sports with EA Sports debuting their new sim series being developed out of the Tiburon studio. Following the release of NBA 2K12 I discussed the environment surrounding NBA video games and whether consumer discontent with that game was opening the door for EA Sports to succeed in their return. The conclusion was that the impact would be minimal with the '1...
  • NBA Lockout Could Be Coming to an End
    by
    Posted November 26th, 2011 at 12:50 am 40 Comments
Breaking news came down in the early hours of Saturday as the owners and players have reportedly reached a tentative agreement on a deal to end the NBA lockout. Nothing is official yet but once the complete deal is written up it will still take a few days for it to be presented to a vote on both sides. If the majority approve that would then bring about a period for free agency and other matters before the planned 66 game season would begin on Christmas. Obviously 2K Sports would be catch...

  • EA Sports NBA Faces Commentary Decision

Through all the events of last week one piece of news that will impact an upcoming title flew somewhat under the radar. Mark Jackson accepted the job coaching the Golden State Warriors. Having joined on as commentators for the canceled NBA Elite 11 the ABC trio of Mike Breen, Jeff Van Gundy, and Jackson had been slated to continue even as the series is being retooled for release in October 2012. Posted May 23rd, 2011 at 8:30 am 18 Comments
Today the NBA announced new multi-year licensing agreements with both Take Two and Electronic Arts to produce official video games for the league. The agreement covers both simulation and arcade titles for consoles, web, and mobile devices. “We have had successful and longstanding relationships with both 2K Sports and EA SPORTS,” said Sal LaRocca, Executive Vice President of NBA Global Merchandising. “Extending our agreements with the top sports video game developers continues to maxi...
  • EA Sports Tiburon Loses an Executive Producer; Joins Wave of Recent Departures
    by
    Posted May 10th, 2011 at 11:45 am 33 Comments
The hits keep on coming for the EA Sports Tiburon studio. After breaking the news last month that several high ranking developers and executives were departing for the new social gaming studio being headed up by former Tiburon GM Philip Holt even more is happening behind the scenes as a long-tenured Executive Producer is leaving the company. Multiple sources have confirmed to me that Jeremy Strauser, who started with EA Sports way back in 1995, has taken a position with Zynga - the larges...
  • EA Sports Delays Return of NBA Sim to 2012
    by
    Posted April 5th, 2011 at 3:06 pm 94 Comments
It has been my gut feeling all along that there would be no simulation NBA title from EA Sports released this year. The damage done by the near release of NBA Elite 11 was too much to recover from quickly, especially given the studio move from EA Canada to Tiburon which would surely hold up the process. When it was discovered that the team hadn't even been put together at the point the move was announced it became clear it wasn't going to get done in a single development cycle. EA Sports ...
