Reports today indicate that Marvel has offered the part of Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, to Chris Evans. Neither side has confirmed the news but multiple sources have revealed that a deal has been offered though Evans would first have to find a way out of an obligation to film a different movie this summer. Months of ongoing speculation has led Marvel to miss their self-imposed decision date with rumored names being narrowed down and added over the last few weeks.

One of the concerns with Evans had been that he has already appeared in a Marvel property, having played Johnny Storm (The Human Torch) in the Fantastic Four films. It seems that wasn’t seen as a big obstacle when it came time for a final decision. For the most part it is unlikely that moviegoers strongly identify Evans as that character and won’t be able to wipe the slate clean going into Captain America.

If Evans turns out to be the guy I think it is a decent choice, better than some that had been rumored (Channing Tatum, John Krasinski, Chase Crawford) but maybe not as good as others (Scott Porter, Mike Vogel, Garret Hedlund). What concerns me is that apparently Evans never screen tested for the role while the others went through that process. They may just be banking on his experience and charisma to pull it off.

Warner Brothers announced at ShoWest yesterday that all of the studio’s tentpole movies from now on will be released in 3D. That includes all superhero films or any big budget special effects driven films. WB will be releasing five 3D movies this year and are expected to have nine next year. It was made clear that the 3D initiative would include those in the line of DC Comics, which means the Superman reboot and next Batman film will be released in 3D.

It is unknown how many of these movies will be filmed in 3D vs being converted in post-production. WB has spoken highly of the conversion process, which has been utilized on the upcoming Clash of the Titans. However WB showed off some of Titans in 3D at ShoWest, as well as some screenings having taken place already, and the reaction has been at best underwhelming if not primarily disappointment regarding the final product. So hopefully WB makes it a standard to shoot the movies in 3D given that the difference is significant.

Alice in Wonderland held off four new entries last week and this time around it should be able to easily win again. Three new movies hit theaters and none are real threats for the top spot. The NCAA Tournament could also eat into potential grosses this weekend.

Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler star in the formulaic romantic comedy The Bounty Hunter. Their names are big enough to draw an audience and the familiar theme of the movie tends to do well at the box office. At the same time another segment of moviegoers will be avoiding it because of its formulaic nature and the horrible reviews it is getting (10% on Rotten Tomatoes). The closest comparison would probably be to Fools Gold, which had the same director and similar relationship angst driven plot, which opened in 2008 to $21 million. Look for The Bounty Hunter to pull in about $20 million.

Another book series to make it to the big screen arrives with Diary of a Wimpy Kid. The family film may not have wide spread appeal and will have to face competition from the third weekend of Alice. Reviews have been mixed, easily the best reviewed new movie out, but that probably won’t sway anyone to see it that wouldn’t have otherwise. Diary of a Wimpy Kid should finish with about $15 million.

Going for the action crowd is Repo Men which features Jude Law and Forest Whitaker as men who recommission artificial body parts when the owners don’t make payments on them. This is a film that has some appeal particularly to males so releasing it on the opening weekend of the NCAA Tournament could really hurt it. The movie has not received good reviews (22% on Rotten Tomatoes) either. Repo Men could make $12 million this weekend.

Opening Predictions
The Bounty Hunter: $20 million
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: $15 million
Repo Men: $12 million

If you grew up in the 80s like I did, you might remember a horror film called Fright Night. It was announced last year that a remake to the classic 80s comedy/horror was in the works. FilmShaft.com is reporting that Craig Gillespie is set to direct DreamWorks’ remake.

Fright Night was a pretty great 1985 vampire-unliving-next-door film, and now Dreamworks have decided it needs a “revamp” (couldn’t resist). This does not mean it will automatically “suck”. Why? Because former Buffy the Vampire Slayer writer and producer, Marti Noxon, has bashed out the new script! So who’s directing it, you ask? Well, that news is pretty darn good too! Lars and the Real Girl helmer, Craig Gillespie, has signed on for vampire-related shenanigans.

In addition to Lars and the Real Girl, Gillespie directed the comedy Mr. Woodock. As the article mentions Buffy the Vampire Slayer writer and producer, Marti Noxon, will write the script for the film. To this day I still enjoy watching Fright Night, but like many remakes of classic films, I’m a bit cautious. Sometimes there are just some movies that shouldn’t be remade, and this might be one of them. If you are of the younger generation who has no idea what this movie is, you should definitely watch it. Roddy McDowall as ‘Peter Vincent’ is one of the more memorable characters of the film.

Fox today announced its plans for Avatar’s release on DVD and Blu-ray and they are somewhat unconventional, though with James Cameron and the biggest movie of all-time involved that shouldn’t come as a big surprise. The initial release will come on April 22nd, not coincidentally that is Earth Day. As opposed to the standard Tuesday releases this places Avatar to arrive in stores on a Thursday.

Because of the desire to provide the absolute best audio and visual transfer the DVD and Blu-ray copies will contain no extras or even trailers. Outside of the simple menu setup the disc will contain only the movie. This, apparently, is the first time it has ever been done. Of course sometime in the future (reportedly in November) new editions of the movie will be released that include the extensive extras that everyone would be looking for out of a film such as Avatar.

The MSRP with be $29.99 for the DVD and $39.99 for the Blu-ray. Many retailers such as Amazon generally list movies under the MSRP by about $10 or so.

There will be no 3D version of the movie released for the time being. Some rumors have slated the 3D version to come late this year but Fox is denying that it will be out that soon. Cameron wants to wait until the marketplace catches up and enough people have 3D capabilities in their homes before releasing it.

The rise to stardom has been quick for Sam Worthington over the last six months, with prominent roles in tentpole films such as Terminator Salvation, the upcoming Clash of the Titans, and of course the biggest movie in history Avatar. He also is lined up to star as Dracula in Dracula: Year Zero. With such a busy schedule already, and an Avatar sequel sometime down the line, it makes it difficult to imagine him taking on another potential franchise. Despite that news has made it out that Warner Brothers has signed him as the lead in Dan Dare, Pilot of the Future.

Dan Dare is based on the incredibly popular British comic book series which never gained much traction in the US and remains somewhat of an unknown outside of England. Though the comics were written in the 1950’s the stories were set in the 1990’s. Dan Dare is the chief pilot in the Interplanet Space Fleet and the first story involved him voyaging to Venus to solve Earth’s food crisis while battling his arch-enemy Mekon. No word on when production is slated to ramp up or of a possible release date just yet.
