Ever since Gary Barnett left Northwestern University after back to back Big Ten Championships in 1995 and 1996, paired with a Rose Bowl appearence in 1995, Northwestern football hasn't been the same. Only twice have they had a winning season, and are 0-3 in bowl games since his tenure.
Following the death of Randy Walker, the head coach at Northwestern from 1999-2005, his linebackers coach Pat Fitzgerald was handed the reigns as Head Coach. His first year was a tough one, as the Wildcats went 4-8, and were a part of the greatest comeback in NCAA History, only not on the good end. But the death of their coach for 7 years was not their only problem. They had to replace their 3-year starter at Quarterback, Brett Basanez, who ranks 13th on the NCAA's all-time list for total offense, and 28th on the all-time list for passing yards.
But all that is about to change. Pat Fitzgerald, who stated that the head coaching job was too much for him now, is returning to his old position of linebackers coach, and the Athletic Department is hiring a relative unknown to the collegiate coaching level, Andrew Taylor.
Andrew Taylor was hired as the offensive coordinator at Northwestern just a year ago. Prior to that, he was the Quarterbacks coach for Lloyd Carr and the University of Michigan. Taylor played high school football and enrolled at Northwestern University. After studying Economics, Taylor coached High School football for some time before landing the Quarterbacks job at UM.

PLATFORM: XBOX 360
DIFFICULTY: All-American
SLIDERS: Default
QUARTER LENGTH: 7 minutes
ROSTERS: Fairdale Kings Version 1
RECRUITING: I can only go after sign as many recruits as I have openings. In the event that I sign extra, cuts will be made from the final week commitments. No player on the current roster can be cut. All recruits must have B or better awareness to keep with Northwestern's tradition of academic excellence.
As a one or two-star school, I can go after one and two-star recruits and five three-star recruits in-state or in pipeline states only. As a three-star school, I can go after three-star and below recruits and three four-star recruits, and they have to be from in-state or a current pipeline state. As a four-star school, I can go after four-star and below recruits and three five-star recuits from in-state or from a pipeline state. As a five or six-star school, I may recruit as I please.
*Other Restrictions may be added later*
REDSHIRTING: Only incoming freshman are allowed to redshirt.
INFRACTIONS: If they are in next-gen, I will multiply the recommended punishment by 1.5 for any violation. Any player's second offense will be doubled the recommended duration, and if a player reaches a total of 3 violations while at the university, they will be cut from the team.
SCHEDULING: As a three-star or below program, I am allowed to schedule one game a season against a team outside the national top 60. Once I reach four-star status, I cannot schedule any game against a team that is outside the national top 60 unless to fill the BCS home-and-home requirement. I cannot schedule a home-and-home series with a school ranked in the Preseason top 25 until I reach four-star status. A home-and-home series must be included with a BCS school, changing BCS conferences following each series (every two years).

2007
Record: 5-7, 3-5 Big Ten (8th in Big Ten)
Preseason ranking: No. 66
Final ranking: Unranked
Bowl game: N/A
Passing leader: Andrew Brewer - 109/173, 1,256 yards, 8 TD, 18 int.
Rushing leader: Brandon Roberson - 162 carries, 805 yards, 7 TD
Receiving leader: Rasheed Ward - 39 catches, 538 yards, 1 TD
Defensive leaders: Mike Dinard - 77 tackles; Kevin Mims - 9 sacks; Deante Battle - 5 int
Senior of the Year: Brandon Roberson - 162 carries, 805 yards, 7 TD's, 30 receptions, 214 yards, 2 TD's
Brandon Roberson stepped in nicely when Impact Player Tyrell Sutton went down for the year. Roberson averaged 5.0 ypc, and only saw significant time in weeks 1 and 6-12. Without the running game Roberson produced, Northwestern's season would have been completely down the drain with the loss of Sutton.

Coach Andrew Taylor, who was the offensive coordinator for Pat Fitzgerald in the 2006 season, already had somewhat of an idea of what to expect from his 2007 squad. Although his Wildcats were playing the Division I-AA Northeastern Huskies, he can't help but be impressed by the performance.
From the beginning coin toss, Coach Taylor had won his first game. Although the Wildcats elected to kick off, it didn't take long for them to get on the board, as Tyrell Sutton took the punt from the Northeastern Punter 64 yards to the house on Northwestern's first touch of the season. Sutton added 2 rushing touchdowns, from 7 and 18 yards, also in the first quarter. Gerard Hamlett added in some points of his own with a 44 yard Pick-Six midway through the first.
The Wildcat's didn't start out the second quarter as promising, allowing HB #9 to plow into the endzone from 15 yards out. But, they got back on track as CJ Bacher threw 2 touchdown passes, a 26 yarder to Kim Thompson and a 4 yarder to Brendan Mitchell. Bacher also added in a 3 yard touchdown scamper on an option play.
Coach Taylor massed subbed in his second string for the second half, and the offense never really got anything going, despite Brandon Roberson's 119 yards on the ground. Brendan Smith did add in another touchdown on a 27 yard fumble recovery early in the 3rd quarter.
After the game, Coach Taylor was pleased by his team's effort, but emphasized how much further they have to go. "At the end of the day, we played well. Tyrell fumbled the ball once, but fortunately for us, he made up for it with his 3 touchdowns. However, the competition Northeastern provided us today is nothing like we'll see in 3 weeks when we face both Ohio St. and Michigan in back-to-back weeks."
Tyrell Sutton, who had 303 all-purpose yards and 3 total touchdowns, was named player of the game for Northwestern.

If all of Coach Taylor's wins are like this, Northwestern will need another new coach for next fall.
Saturday's affair against Nevada was only the first of what promise to be many hard-fought, down-to-the-wire battles involving Northwestern in the coming years. "My doctor's going to have to start to prescribe some stress-relief medication soon. I'm just glad we pulled it out in the end."
Northwestern tried to begin their second game where their first one left off, holding Nevada's offense to a missed 48 yard Field Goal on their first possession. CJ Bacher then made some needle-in-a-haystack passes to put his team in field goal range before the quarter ended.
However, Northwestern's season would officially begin in the second, as Nevada rolled off 14 straight points, both on the arm of their Quarterback, Nick Graziano. Bacher threw 1 of his 3 interceptions in between Wolfpack scoring drives, shifting momentum fully in Nevada's favor.
"I felt like I was part of an older version of NCAA, with the momentum they had going," said Taylor of Nevada's streak of unanswered points.
Stefan Demos would add a field goal as the first half ended, putting Northwestern back on track. It would continue when Tyrell Sutton, who had a less-than stellar day, punched in a 3rd and Goal from the Nevada 1 yard line. Northwestern attempted the 2-point conversion to tie the game at 14, but Cameron Joplin, the Northwestern Tight End, dropped the pass in the endzone when a defender made contact.
The fourth quarter would be full of turnovers; 2 interceptions by Brewer and a fumble by Nevada. However, the team's offenses would calm down and Nevada, with under a minute remaining in the quarter, would have their Junior kicker knock in an easy 24-yarder to put them up by 5.
On the ensuing kickoff, Tyrell Sutton would net off a fantastic return, almost advancing the ball to the Wildcat 40 yard line. CJ Bacher would complete consecutive passes before stopping the clock with :26 remaining in the contest. After an incomplete pass on first down, Bacher would complete another pass for a first down. After a spike, Northwestern had 2 chances to throw to the endzone from the Wolfpack 29 yard line. With :08 remaining, Bacher heaved a pass up that would fall incomplete, with :03 remaining. Bacher would then heave another pass up towards the endzone, and miraculously, Sidney Stewert found a way to get open and snag the ball and fall into the endzone, giving Northwestern the lead. Taylor was then forced to pick a extra point play, even though the clock had reached 0, so for the hell of it, Taylor kept his offense on the field and attempted the 2-point conversion, which would be successful.
Kevin Mims, who recorded 7 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1 sack, and 1 forced fumble, was named player of the game.

Wisconsin was crazy this year. Luckily, I didn't have to play them, but over the season, both Donovan and PJ Hill were Heisman contenders. It was like Lienart-Bush all over again.
What suprised me the most was Florida getting in the NC without making their Conference Championship game.
