GM Ruskell fired after scandal
June 16th, 2008
By Ron Burgundy

Seattle Seahawks owner August Alm has fired general manager Tim Ruskell as it was uncovered last week that he had been gambling on Seahawks games in the 2007 season.

“It has recently been uncovered that Mr. Ruskell has been gambling on NFL games.” Alm said. “We feel this is conduct not only detrimental to the team but shows no regard or care for the Seahawks organization or city of Seattle. He will no longer be a part of our organization. I wish him luck in future endeavors, as he is a bright guy who I think just needs to clean up his act.”

Ruskell denied interviews and questions. No word yet on whether this had been going on.

The hunt for a new general manager is on for the Seahawks, while Holmgren holds GM duties for now, and there has been no hint as to who is in mind as a successor to Ruskell. After Mr. Ruskell led the Seahawks to the Super Bowl in his first year as GM, the city of Seattle has to feel betrayed and worried, but it isn’t over for this football team, still a talented group in the office and on the field.

Dylan Dutra hired as new general manager of Seahawks
August 1st, 2008
By Ron Burgundy

One week before the preseason starts Seattle Seahawks owner August Alm has hired the organization's new general manager, 32 year old Dylan Dutra. Dutra has no prior experience operating a football team which makes you think that this guy could be another Matt Millen. Meeting this man you would assume otherwise. Alm says Dutra has a "great football mind" and thinks he can lead this team to Super Bowl victories.

"This is definitely a dream come true for me. I grew up watching the Seahawks and I know what this organization is capable of. I will bring this city the Super Bowl titles they deserve."

This young man seems very ambitious; let's see if he can deliver on his promises.

'Hawks sign Mauia
August 5th, 2008
By Ron Burgundy

As his first real act as general manager Dutra, who was born and raised in Hawaii, showed his bias towards players from the islands by signing FB Reagan Mauia.

"I liked what I saw out of this guy looking at tape from his rookie season." Dutra told the Seattle Times today. "Mike [Holmgren, Head Coach] and I talked about what we wanted at the position, and we agreed that we wanted someone who could block first, but also be a threat out of the backfield."

When asked about the team's current FB, Leonard Weaver, Dutra said he would be moved over to TE and play behind rookie John Carlson while still grabbing a decent amount of playtime. Weaver's size (6'0") could definitely be a concern at the TE position, but both general manager and coach seem confident about the move.

"I am grateful for the opportunity I am being given here," said Mauia, "and hope to be able to contribute right away for this organization."

As it stands, it seems Mauia will hold the starting job over rookie Owen Schmitt. Four days in and Dutra is already trying to mold his vision here in Seattle. Time will tell if he's picking winners.

About the Franchise
Quarter Length: 10 minutes
Difficulty: Custom
Pre-Existing Injuries: Off
Penalty Sliders: 58 for all
Rosters: Updated as of Update #15
FA Rules: No real rules, just have some control in free agency and not grab every 90+ overall guy I see. Realism is key.

I don't plan on playing the preseason games and will update them in an the news post format. As for the games, I'm not sure what I'll do. I plan on taking pictures or maybe videos with my camcorder. It shouldn't look too bad. I will play all games other than the preseason. Anyway, I'm definitely looking forward to doing this. It should definitely put the fire in playing Madden. Hope this lasts. I've had franchises back in the day (madden 04/05) on maddennation (now sportsgamer) that have lasted a good amount of time. Thanks in advance if you follow. :)

Also, I hope to keep you guys up to date on what's going around the league rather than fully focus on the Seahawks (though the main focus does still stay with Seattle). Hopefully, later, I can get you guys more immersed by having you guys in the franchise (changing the name of rookies or something and following them). Anyway, enjoy for now. :)

Hawks soar above the Vikings in preseason
August 7th, 2008
By Ron Burgundy

The Seahawks traveled to Minnesota tonight with a mission in mind. Preseason games usually don't mean much, but for the Seahawks this was a chance to prove they could overcome the media adversities faced earlier this year. They did just that as they toppled the Vikings 20-9.

The first half was very uneventful, with only 2 Vikings field goals lighting up the scoreboard. However, the Seahawks' 2nd stringers would step up in the 3rd quarter as Julius Jones would score on a 9 yard touchdown run and Koren Robinson would catch a bullet from Seneca Wallace from 7 yards out to put them ahead 14-6.

The Vikings would only be able to tack on another field goal as the Seahawks did well to hold possession in the 4th quarter. With 28 seconds left, Seneca Wallace hit Leonard Weaver for touchdown to put the game away (though it should be noted that Olindo Mare missed the extra point).

This was a good showing for the Seahawks who looked to show early on this year that they could be contenders and they have done just that. This game showed they have depth and defense.

Julius Jones made a case towards being the starter with 90 yards from only 15 carries to go along with a touchdown. Koren Robinson also had a good showing, grabbing 8 passes for 98 yards including a touchdown. Seneca Wallace, even while leading his team to 20 points in the 2nd half, threw 2 interceptions and was a bit inaccurate at times. No worries, though, as Hasselbeck completed 76 percent of his passes.

Regardless of whether some of these guys are able to bump themselves up to first string for the regular season there is no doubt they will help this team in some form or role. Even though it's the preseason, we have a win, and every one is important, even at this time.

Are you from SG?

Kind of. I posted a couple franchises back in 2005/2006. I got around 900 posts myself. Stopped posting whenever. Today I was looking for franchises and thinking to start my own, and I happened to google my name and found my old 'chises from way back on SG. Found out it was going under (which sucks. So many good active chises) and came here along with you guys just today.

Seahawks get their second win of preseason against Bears
August 18th, 2008
By Ron Burgundy

Coming off of an impressive win in Minnesota in week 1 of the preseason the Seahawks showed again that they were ready to compete this season. The Bears were handed their first lost of the preseason in a game where their defense made Seattle kick 3 FGs on their first 3 scoring drives. The Seahawks kept pounding away with Koren Robinson getting his 2nd TD grab of the season at the end of the first half.

Chicago would start things off great by scoring a touchdown in the first minute. However, they just couldn't get anything going after that. They were shut down to less than 50 yards on the ground and less than 200 yards in total offense. Orton and the gang just couldn't catch a break in this one and there seemed to be a Seahawk around every ball. The Bears would put up another touchdown late in the game, but it wasn't enough as they fell 22-17.

As mentioned before, Robinson had another great game. Along with Robinson, Trufant grabbed another interception to go along with his one against the Vikings and Julius Jones was today's top rusher. Brant Mebone also played solid with 2 sacks and a tackle for a loss on top of that. With the benchwarmers playing well in the preseason, the Seahawk's starters should not feel comfortable about their job as starters.

Chargers hand Seattle their first loss
August 26th, 2008
By Ron Burgundy

After a more than impressive showing in the past two games, the defense let the Seahawks down in this one, surrendering 30 points and 300 yards. Although they did keep Tomlinson in check, holding him to 2.7 yards per carry, they still allowed the Chargers to put points on the board while they couldn't do the same, getting nothing in the 4th quarter.

The Seahawks started the game off with a field goal and the first quarter later ended with a 3-3 score. The Chargers then scored 14 in the 2nd quarter as they showed dominance. They never let up and put up another 13 in the 2nd half, leading to a 30-17 final score. Seneca Wallace was just 9 of 23 in this game as the Charger defense had his number, also picking off one of his passes. Both Julius Jones and Maurice Morris were non-factors in this one and the Seahawks didn't find any more help from their receiving core either.

Though showing promise in their first two games, the Chargers showed the Seahawks that they still have areas to improve upon, areas that need to be worked on in order to be dominant this season. Seattle faces the Raiders in their final pre-season game, a team with one win, one loss and one tie. None of Seattle's games have been easy but they at least attacked the first two with intensity. Last night's game was definitely treated more like it was the preseason game it was and knowing coach Holmgren that just isn't acceptable, even at this stage.

Hasselbeck dominant against Raiders to end pre-season
August 30th, 2008
By Ron Burgundy

The good news for the Raiders? Their bench stepped up in the second half of last night's game against the Seahawks outscoring them 21-7. The bad news? They were absolutely shut out in the first half 24-0 in route to lose their final preseason game of 2008.

Matt Hasselbeck went 20 for 22 on the day with 3 touchdowns to completely tear up the Raiders in the first half. Many Seattle receivers prospered from Matt's success as their dominated in the air on a day that the Raiders pass defense is definitely willing to forget. The ground game wasn't there for Seattle once again, but Hasselbeck was able to step up with excellent blocking up front to control this game.

The Raiders never could recover from a half where Jamarcus Russell went 3 for 8 with an interception. The would go on to give up 274 yards of offense to the Seattle Seahawks while gaining only 176 themselves. Penalties definitely hurt the Raiders as they committed 7 of them for 41 yards.

In the end, the Raiders' poor performance last night was overshadowed by the shine of the Seahawks' play. This preseason has more than proved that Seattle are ready to put this summer's scandals behind them and go far in 2008.

Trades net Seahawks a couple draft picks
September 2nd, 2008
By Ron Burgundy

Less than a week before the regular season starts for the Seattle Seahawks new general manager, Dylan Dutra, makes a couple of trades that, in the end, net the Seahawks a 3rd and 6th round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.

The first of these trades had wide receiver Nate Burleson going to the Chiefs for outside linebacker Donnie Edwards. Burleson should make an immediate impact for the Chiefs, giving them another threat in the air other than Gonzalez and Bowe.

The second trade, only hours later, had Donnie Edwards moving to his third team of the day, the Cincinnati Bengals, for Cincy's 3rd and 6th round picks in the 2009 NFL Draft. Edwards seemed optimistic about helping out one of the league's worst defenses last year. "I'm going to a place where I know I can make an impact, and I think this team is going places."

Nate Burleson held one of the Seahawks' biggest contracts with $49 million over 5 years. With this move Dutra seems to be looking to increase some cap space to make some moves down the line while getting a couple more opportunities to get a talented young player in the draft. Koren Robinson will step up to be the team's 3rd receiver after a preseason in which he broke out for great games. Robinson and the Seahawks travel to Buffalo for their first game of the regular season this weekend.

Depth chart for first regular season game released
September 5th, 2008
By Ron Burgundy

Despite a brilliant showing in the preseason, Julius Jones will still play back-up to running back Maurice Morris. Holmgren has stated that Jones will get plenty of playtime, which seems to be a result of his great preseason.

The rest of the team's depth chart comes much to no surprise as there isn't much change from the preseason. Rookie tight end John Carlson holds his starting job over fullback-turned-tight-end Leonard Weaver.

"[Holmgren] has made it clear that I will get the playing time I deserve," said Weaver, "and I fully trust that I will still have a good part of this offense. The change to tight end has been difficult over the past few weeks, but I'm ready to make plays for this team on Sunday."

Jaws: Welcome back to NFL matchup, and tomorrow, guys, we have another interesting game with the Seahawks and Bills.

Hodge: Yeah, the Bills, in the preseason, have shown that they have improved substantially over last season in which they went 7-9 and missed the playoffs for the 8th straight time. A lot of their success this year will lie in quarterback Trent Edwards who enters the year as the starter for the first time. He has the weapons around him in Lee Evans, Marshawn Lynch and an outstanding line anchored by Jason Peters. If he can play well, and the players around him play up to their potential, this offense will be a threat to put points up on the board.

Jaws: But with the promise they do show they start the season against a very tough Seattle Seahawks team that went 10-6 last year and had the 9th best offense. That success is attributed to the play of veteran Matt Hasselbeck who hopes to lead his team to another playoff appearance. He faces a tough Bills pass defense, sunday, led by Terrence McGee, Aaron Schobel and Donte Whitner. Much will rely on the 'Hawks defense as well, and whether Kerney and the rest of this D can get pressure on Edwards and force him to make mistakes. The key to this game will definitely be the pass game, and I think whoever gets it going through the air has a good shot at winning this.

Sal: Yeah, I think turnovers, as well, will play a key part in this matchup. These two teams are a close matchup and both are hungry for a win, and turnovers can make a difference in this one.

Jaws: So who do you guys like to win?

Sal: I say the Seahawks will win. After their success last season they seem poised to make another run at the playoffs this season and it all starts in Buffalo. I think they will put the pressure on Edwards and he will make mistakes. Defense will win this one for Seattle.

Hodge: Yeah, I'm going to have to agree. The Seahawks looked hot in the preseason, especially last week against the Raiders, and I think that will translate into more fire tomorrow and a win.

Jaws: I'm gonna go with the Bills.
-Sal and Hodge show their surprise-
Yeah, I think they're looking good right now and if they can win the battle on the line on both sides of the ball they have a great shot at winning. Look at them to get after Hasselbeck, keep Edwards safe to make good reads and give big holes to a running back who doesn't need them.

Hasselbeck's efficiency leads 'Hawks to win in overtime
http://blogs.king5.com/seahawks/images/hasselbeck_generic.jpg

BUFFALO, NY - The Seahawks won the coin toss to start the overtime period and never looked back as Hasselbeck drove them down to field, like he had done all game, for the game-winning field goal. On the day Hasselbeck completed 19 of his 23 passes, averaging over 11 yards per completion, on a day where the ground game was non-existant. Both Morris and Jones averaged less than 3 yards per carry and Morris even fumbled early in the 1st quarter, giving the ball up in the redzone.

The Bills also played well in the air with a non-existant ground game. Trent Edwards left the game on the 3rd quarter off a big hit by Lawrence Jackson, but was able to come back in the 4th to put up 10 points, including setting up the last-second field goal that sent the game into overtime. JP Losman played surprisingly well in Edwards' absence completing 9 of 11 passes.

Both defenses played well, completely negating the run from the equation, and forcing 2 turnovers, Kelsay scoring a TD off of his takeaway. When it mattered, though, the Bills' defense could not come up with a stop in overtime to give their offense a chance to win it. Despite the loss the Bills showed excellence and proved that they have what it takes to make a big run this year.

As for the Seahawks, this win could only be the beginning. The pass game looked amazing and the defense played fiercly. The running game was nowhere to be found but this is only week 1. The 'Hawks will look to play off this win and let the NFL know they are a force to be reckoned with. - Champ Kind

Running game needs to step up for the Seahawks next week and beyond
September 11th, 2008
By Ron Burgundy

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/ABPub/2008/05/02/2004389613.jpg

The running game needs to step up if Seattle wants to continue winning games. Hasselbeck showed he's still got it last week against the Bills' great pass defense, but he won't be able to do it alone all season. Maurice Morris had a poor showing on Sunday, netting only 48 yards on 18 carries, plus his fumble early on in scoring position. Julius Jones wasn't hot either coming in to relieve him. Mauia seemed to be the only positive thing for Seattle on the ground, gaining 16 yards on 2 carries.

The ground game was not the only thing hindering Seattle from getting a bigger win against the Bills. Their pass defense allowed both Edwards and Losman to get 80+ completion percentage. The Seahawks need to find a way to force incompletions, whether that is through their secondary or pass rush.

We won't complain, a win is a win, but a true Super Bowl team has got every facet of their game clicking. Look for the Seahawks to try to get their running game in the groove against the San Francisco 49ers at home this sunday.

So the Lions will accept Lofa Tatupu (97 ovr), Deion Branch (87 ovr), and a 3rd round draft pick for Calvin Johnson (91 ovr). I'm very unsure about whether I should make this trade or not. I love Calvin Johnson and he's got the talents to be an MVP player (though that won't happen with the Lions). Not only do I want to give him the chance to play in an offense where he has some playmakers around him, but I'd love to have him on my team. He'll be a playmaker and top WR for the next 15 or so years.

On the downside, that's a lot to give up. Tatupu is a young and very talented linebacker, one of the best in the game. Like Johnson, he'll be one of the best at his position for many years. Also, do you think it would be realistic for the Lions to give up Johnson? I am giving them a huge playmaker on defense (something they desperately need) and somewhat filling the void at WR with 29 year old Branch.

Let me know what you think. Good and realistic trade?

Matt1

id say unrealistic

Johnson is the future of the Lions Offense and Branch is on the decline imo. Plus didn't tatopu just sign a big contract last season?

Yeah, I agree. And after reading the following quote, Tatupu is going nowhere:

On March 21, 2008 the Seahawks signed Tatupu to a six-year contract extension through the year 2015. The deal is worth $42 million, with $18 million guaranteed alone in the years 2008 to 2010. The contract made Tatupu one of the six highest-paid linebackers in the League. Tatupu responded by stating, "I'm going to end my career with the Seahawks."

I like Tatupu anyway. Pacific Islanders will always have a place on my team.

Week 6 Preview:

http://i493.photobucket.com/albums/rr292/seahawkschise/GameLogo.jpg

http://nfl.imageg.net/graphics/category_images/packers_logo.jpg
The Packers (3-2) are coming out of a sloppy game against the Falcons, in which both teams committed 4 turnovers each. Green Bay was able to come out of that game with the win, but they won't be as lucky if they commit as many mistakes this week against Seattle. The deciding factor in last week's game was Green Bay's defensive line. The Packers held Turner and the Falcons to just 26 yards rushing and sacked rookie QB Matt Ryan 6 times. They face a Seahawks team that is 30th in the league in rushing and that allowed 5 sacks against the Giants in week 5. Look for the battle in the trenches to determine whether the Packers can come out on top.

http://nfl.imageg.net/graphics/category_images/seahawks_logo.jpg
The Seahawks (3-1) come fresh off a big win in New York that showed their 7th rank defense can win them games. Brandon Jacobs was held to just 40 yards on the ground and Eli Manning was forced to throw the ball up 40 times. Seattle will need to do the same against the Packers, shutting down Ryan Grant and forcing the inexperienced Aaron Rodgers to make plays to win the game. The Seahawks have also committed the least penalties in the league so far, which could be a deciding factor against a Green Bay team that has been riddled with mistakes as of late.

Seattle (4-1) hopes to build on the defensive success of late against the Buccaneers on the road. After holding the Packers to just 7 points last week at home they face a cruising Tampa Bay offense that has put up 132 points in the last 4 games. The Seahawks' crumbling running game faces a stout run defense this week; I wouldn't bet on Morris and Jones to turn things around this week. Seattle's defense will need to play like they did last week in order to win this one, because the Bucs' defense will be doing them no favors.

http://nfl.imageg.net/graphics/category_images/tampaBay_logo.jpg
Tampa Bay (4-2) are hot off a 4 game winning streak, including last week's 27-10 win over the Panthers. The Buccaneer's held Delhomme to 139 yards, and the Panthers' offense as a whole to 214 total yards on offense. They look to continue their defensive dominance on a Seattle team that is playing similarly tough defense. Wide receiver Joey Galloway is coming off back to back 100 yard games, a streak that will be hard to extend against one of the league's premier corners, Marcus Trufant. Tampa Bay will find more success in this game giving the ball to Warrick Dunn who also played well against the Panthers, putting up 83 yards on 18 carries.

The Seattle Seahawks (4-2) are coming off of a disappointing overtime loss against the Buccaneers, in which the defense could do absolutely nothing just one week after burying the Packers' offense. in their week 2 win Seattle's secondary was torn up by JT O'Sullivan who completed 76 percent of his passes for 287 yards. This week they face newly signed Patrick Ramsey, who is filling in at the injury riddled quarterback position for the 49ers. Look for Seattle to attack Ramsey and force him to make mistakes in a new system.

http://nfl.imageg.net/graphics/category_images/49ers_logo.jpg
The San Francisco 49ers (4-3) fell to the Seahawks in week 2 33-23. In that game Frank Gore was held to just 69 yards on the ground. He faces a Seattle defense that just allowed Warrick Dunn to run all over them. Look for Gore to try to get in a rhythm and hopefully lead the 49ers to split the series.

Week 9 Preview:
http://i493.photobucket.com/albums/rr292/seahawkschise/GameLogo-3.jpg

http://nfl.imageg.net/graphics/category_images/eagles_logo.jpg
The Eagles (4-3) come into this game looking to catch up to the NFC East leading Redskins (7-2) with the second best record in that division. They come into this game against a top 5 passing offense against a Seattle team that has been suspect against the pass as of late. They are also averaging over 100 yards a game and look to expose the Seahawks run defense, which has also been breaking down as of late. The Eagles need to attack this game aggresively on the offensive side of the ball to win.

http://nfl.imageg.net/graphics/category_images/seahawks_logo.jpg
The Seahawks (4-3) look to keep up with the NFC West leading 49ers (5-3) who have a bye this week. So far, Seattle's rushing offense has been terrible, and they have yet to surpass 100 yards on the ground as a team this season. This could all change against one of the worst rush defenses in the league. Jones and Morris seem poised to make a turnaround after one of their worst efforts of the season last week against the 2nd rank rush defense of the 49ers.
