Thought I'd get this started. A lot of season left to be played.

It'll be interesting to see what the Sixers do with the rest of this season. I hope they're not just putting a cap on their hopes for this year with the firing of Cheeks. If Brand gets going and everyone around him learns to play with him in the system they could definitely move up in the standings with how bad the conference is.
I thought it was crappy that they fired him. Was he really that bad of a coach?
dlips
12-14-2008, 07:53 PM
I really don't think so, he was turning things around these past few seasons, and they had extended him TWICE in the past year. I think it was just because of with the players they had returning from last season and the high-profile addition of Brand, they were expected to get off to a much better start. They've been terrible on offense this season which was probably a large factor. But they did get a win last night in their first game under DiLeo, albeit against Washington.

Reggie Theus has been fired as coach of the Sacramento Kings, according to NBA coaching sources.
Assistant coach Kenny Natt will be elevated to interim coach, sources said.

Who the F are these guys getting coaching jobs in the NBA? Are they just pulling guys in off the street now? I mean seriously - the best two guys the Kings could come up with in the whole world to coach their team were Reggie Theus and Kenny Natt? The Bulls looked near and far and found...Vinny Del Negro?
VDN is the next Greg Popovich. Book it...:ninja:
As far as Theus, he's going back to Hanging with Mr. Cooper.

Lakers continue winning ugly too much trapping is leaving open shooters and allowing easy penetration. Stu Lantz has it figured though in having the starters play man defense and the subs continue the trapping seems like an easy solution to our current problem.

Haven't seen the Bulls in a while. Does Del Negro still look like he's about to get hit by a runaway bus? The first month of the season I imagined him in the timeouts saying things like "Guys, we need to score more" and "Guys, play tougher defense, please".

he's actually not bad. i thought the same thing then all these former coaches and teammates talk about what a great basketball mind he is lol. He also has Bernie Bickerstaff and Frank Drebin (Del Harris) by his side. So they fill in whatever he doesn't know.

after watching Boston beat the hornets it was clear 2 me Boston is the best team around and when the playoffs come round hte cavs wont be able to contend because Bron wont be able to keep his team fired up like KG does with his second team.

12-16-2008, 04:40 PM
Boston's definitely the team to beat but the Cavs and Lakers have really played well enough to be in contention. LA's defense is still suspect though as they have had a lot of opponent score over 100+ points recently and they are still susceptible to a good pick and roll team (Boston, San Antonio, etc.). Cleveland is going to keep on winning as long as LeBron keeps up putting up
MVP-like numbers night in and night out.
On the flip side, the Clippers have been awful (again), the Thunder haven't made much progress and powerhouses such as Phoenix and Dallas have struggled.

My Spurs got a test these next few nights. They have New Orleans tonight which should be a good one. They had a good battle last year in the playoffs so I expect this to be one of those games again.
Boston by far is the best team in the NBA right now. I am going to watch their game tonight against the Hawks (that shouldn't be an easy one) as they (Hawks) have shown us.

True, but they still will not get out of the 2nd round until a post player on offense is found. Bibby has been much better this year. I'm still waiting for more then Josh Smith if he takes his game to the next level then so will the hawks.

I don't know. He's playing lazy and doesn't appear to give a shit. I guess he got his money and is done. Right now, we suck at D again because we're trying to copy the Celtics but we don't know how. Our bigs don't come out on pick and roll, we don't rotate to open guys and we force everyone to the hoop and go "well I forced them to help, it's your problem now". We try to play the overload zone, but we leave big guys open under the hoop and we can't get a rebound. Lamar is absolutely worthless, Pau has lost his mo, Phil keeps playing Luke over Vlad, just a fucking disaster.
Tough win tonight by the Cavs...Boobie hit 2 extremely clutch 3s in the 4th after Houston went on a run thanks to Yao getting to the foul line every posession. Bron also had a NASTY pin on Yao at the end of the 4th, great game.

LeBron is scoring less, playing less, and they're having the best season since he was drafted.

There is no arguing that LeBron IS that team, but that doesn't mean they aren't playing like one. This isn't LeBron pick and roll at the top of the key every possession anymore.
Yeah...Mo really adds something to our offense that we havent had since Bron has been here. Someone who can handle the ball and a #2 scoring option.

Ya, Farmar is awful defensively. Can't keep anyone in front of him. Finally we let Sasha play at PG (although I'm a Sasha fan so I think he can fit at the 1), although Kobe guards the PG often too.
As far as Ariza, it's interesting because he's playing about 30-33 minutes. If he comes off the bench, he's basically playing 33 out of the last 40 minutes. I agree Vlad is a better fit with the starters because of his shooting, but at the same time, we have to spread out Ariza's minutes a bit. Funny thing is I was kind of starting to come around on Luke. I'm a Luke hater, but he did bring a sense of stability to the offense.

Ariza is doing what Ronny Turiaf couldn't do as a Laker...making plays on a consistent basis. I don't know how I feel with him in the starting lineup but there is no denying that he makes plays on the court...I do, as well, think that Vlad should be starting.
while watching tonights game against the Hornets...Bynum is still not being as physical as he needs to be and Pau is getting pushed around by David West and Chandler. It's painstakingly clear that the Lakers need to invest in a player who can play the PG position well...Fisher won't be around forever.
on another note...lol, the Celtics lost again tonight, this time to the bobcats...what is that 5 straight?

I understand that Bynum is not the load Shaq was/is but I watched the Portand/Laker classic the other night and I suggest Bynum do the same. The low post position Shaq got on a consitent basis led to alot of easy looks it seems like even when Gasol is not on the floor Bynum always gets the ball in the high post or too far away from the basket. Also I read on another forum that Fisher shoots 22% in the paint.. are u f'n kidding me someone should slap some sense into that guy and let him know to stop and pull up for a short jumper or pass the damn ball!!!

Masta, what are your thoughts on Hickson? I haven't seen enough games to pass judgement.
Very very good young big. Has more potential than I first thought.
Has the skill set for the NBA and the body...Ben and Z being down is a good thing, because he's going to get to see live bullets more frequently than Mike Brown wanted (he said he wanted him to take it slow), meaning come playoff time he'll likely be a better than decent 9th guy.
Seriously, I thought eh kid from Kansas would be better...I don't think so anymore.

They need to get him in more pick and roll. He's so quick coming off and if you hedge to aggressively he can split it. Reminded me of Wade with a couple moves coming off screens in OT.

The Lakers frustrate me when I see how complete of a game they can put together when they play with intensity. Bynum and Gasol owned the paint tonight and Kobe once again showed some phenomenal defense on LB23 holding him to 9 of 29 from the field. Game ended in a blowout but if not for Cavs bricking so many wide open 3's it would have been much closer.

I agree...it's like they don't get up for certain games...why couldn't they have played with that kindof intensity against the Magic a couple of days ago? I still don't think they are giving the ball to Bynum enough....

umm?
IMO, that would be stupid...Bynum is really starting to show an offensive game that we haven't seen up until this point and it's really rewarding after what happened last season and the contract we gave him in the offseason....
I don't know why we would trade our best big man for a guy who's just average? I wouldn't trade for Okafor at all, he's just not that good...he's a 10.0 ppg 10.0 rpg guy...nothing really special.
I would trade for Gerald Wallace or Raymond Felton though.
Hey -G- I lurk over at the realGm boards and saw that you suggested we should trade Bynum for Okafur straight up next year... were you serious? If so why do you think that?
It was half-joke/half me being pissed at Bynum for not rebounding, playing defense, and playing soft. I do like Okafor though, I think he's an underrated anchor defensively although undersized, and I like how he plays aggressively. When Bynum plays like a girl, I'd take Okafor over him. Of course, Bynum turned his play around and has been a beast lately, 24/12/3 blocks in his last 5. He started breaking out last January. hopefully he keeps it up. He was the only bright spot in that Charlotte game, looking like a legit #1 guy after Kobe fouled out.
The real problem we're seeing is when Bynum and Pau are both on the floor together, we're just too slow defensively, mainly on jumping shooting PFs since Pau isn't quick enough.

Couple of thoughts from tonight's game:
1) The Magic look damn impressive. Jameer is finally playing like the guy I saw at St. Josephs. Lewis, Howard, and Nelson may be one of the most impressive young trios I've seen in a long time.
2) Poor Lebron. Say what you want, but his supporting cast is still pretty damn pathetic. It really is amazing how much better he makes that team. I am constantly impressed by his ability to lift his team (something Kobe has severely lacked until recently and Kobe's still not very good at it, lol).
3) Lebron travels more than Shaq, lol.
Lebron has terrible footwork. That's about all you got right.
If Mo Williams doesn't make the All-Star game, the Cavs will win the title guaranteed. LeBron will be pissed.
He told a local beat guy, with a straight face, that he'd give Mo his spot and tell Stern he's not going.

2) Poor Lebron. Say what you want, but his supporting cast is still pretty damn pathetic.
lol
you are flat out wrong. Even Michael, in a weaker NBA at the time, couldn't carry a team by himself to the best record in the league. The fact that the East has 3 of the top five teams in the game this year compunds the fact that the Cavs have to be pretty good and pretty deep to be sitting on top right now.
I like that LeBron said this:
"It just shows the disrespect that basketball in Cleveland continues to get. I haven't seen the All-Star list yet, so I can't comment on who's in it. But it's definitely disrespectful that we continue to do work every year with nothing to show for it. They always say when you win, individual accolades will take care of itself. But sometimes it doesn't happen.
"We all believe that Mo's an All-Star and the reason we've had the best record in the NBA right now. Mo's a big part of our team. Just look at the wins and losses from last year to this year with really only one addition - Mo Williams. I'm disappointed for him and disappointed for me because I tried to make sure he got in there by helping him get better."
To just ignore Mo is really odd. And we've had two starters injured for almost a month and still have the best record.
The Cavs are probably the second deepest team in the league, behind Boston. They just shot poorly last night.

9, and I wouldn't consider Eddie House, Tony Allen, Glen Davis, and Leon Powe a good bench. 10 if you include Scalabrine, who only played because Perkins was hurt. Unless you're talking about the ability to just plug guys in wherever due to the great defense (Boston and Cleveland can do this). Boston's bench will be exposed in the playoffs. I'd say the Lakers are the deepest team in the league (note, that doesn't mean best) followed by Cleveland.

The second team unit of Sasha, Farmar and Odom can be very frustrating. Some games they come in and blow the lid off the game by getting hot others they give up a big lead, personally I'd settle for somewhere inbetween. Farmar needs to get back to driving to the basket, Sasha needs to utilize the pump fake to take a couple steps inside the arch and settle for the two and Odom... well Odom needs a brain.

yea, I was reading a Lakers blog and some douche had already started the rumor that Bynum tore his ACL...which, at this moment, is not true.
When I first saw it, I thought he was done. But the way his knee went straight back instead of sideways is good news. I think the reason he was in so much pain was because he just got smashed in the knee by Kobe's head, and he was just in shock. I think he'll be out 3-4 weeks. God I hope I'm right.

Well, the thing is the timetable sounds very very conservative. He's not having surgery, which means it's a grade 2 MCL tear. That usually takes 6-8 weeks. Bynum is gonna start rehab in about 2 weeks. Obviously after last year though, I'm not going to get my hopes up.

LeBron - 52 11 10 (on 17-33)
Ilgauskas - 15 8
Szczerbiak - 12 13
Gibson - 11
Mo Williams - 9 4 2
and every Cavalier got on the board. Lebron accounted for more on tha game than Kobe did because the 11 assists equal 22-33 points, and the Cavs score on about 50% of the possesions they get the ball off of a defensive rebound (of which he had 10).
Kobe had 60 (on 19-31), Pau had 31 and Ariza had 13. Four of the Lakers that played had zero points, and the rest that did only had 6 each. Regardless fo the argument, LeBron had a bigger impact on the game, and he had more help doing it. And the shooting % is similar.

* You can't be anything but impressed with LeBron James' 52-point, 11-assist, 10 rebound performance in New York in the Cavaliers' 107-102 win, even if it did come against the defenseless Knicks. Some people are already saying all James wanted to do was match Bryant's 61-point performance the other night in the Garden. And I'm absolutely positive Kobe's outing had a direct influence on LeBron's. But all the great ones get fired up to have their best nights in the nation's largest market. It's just too bad the Knicks are so helpless to do anything about it.
* Still, James took too many bad shots (i.e. fadeaway three-pointers with too much time on the shot clock),and even took some heat from Cavs legend and television color analyst Austin Carr for getting caught up in the Knicks' wild style of basketball. I watched the game with a friend and when Cavs guard Mo Williams airballed a baseline jumper in the fourth quarter, my friend turned to me and said, "Well, what do you expect? The other guys are gonna be cold when they don't touch the ball."
* That's not to say James was totally hogging it, but he definitely didn't help the offense get into any sort of rhythm by trying to match or surpass Bryant. But again, he put up Hall of Fame numbers and the Cavs won, and you can never argue with the bottom line.
lol
what's being lost in all this is kobe only played 36 minutes. If he played the whole game or jacked up shots in the 4th he could have probably approached 80 again

lol
Oh, for sure. I think people started to think Kobe couldn't do that anymore.

ESPN Poll 80% LeBron performance 20% Kobe.
I think you could make a case for either, but I thought a poll like that would be around 45-55 either way.

most of the people who voted didnt even watch either games and went with the guy who has the best statline...lol.

I watched both games, Kobe's performance was WAY more impressive, IMO. That guy was Jordan-esque on Monday night. He was draining everything he shot and there was nothing that could be done. Lebron, on the other hand, was driving and traveling for half his points, lol. I'm not saying the triple-double wasn't one of the top performances of the year, but Kobe's performance was lethal.
*P.S. lol @ Kwon. You and Pacman have to be twins separated at birth.

I'm really looking forward to Sunday's game with Cleveland...the ultimate Bron/Kobe debate...
eh, regular season games are nice, but in the grand scheme of things they don't mean shit come May/June.

One of the top performances of ALL TIME. Only one person has scored more in a Triple double, and only one person has more 50+ games in MSG.

LeBron must be the MVP right? I mean, he's the "only" All-Star caliber player the Cavs have, and we only lost nine games, lead the league in point differential, have the second best record in the league, and will likely win the Championship this year.
Just being in contention like we are in a year where the two previous Finals teams have TWO OR THREE All-STARS and we only have one should mean without a doubt that all of our success is because of him. making him the obvious and only choice for MVP...seeing as he has no other All-Stars to play with and Kobe/KG does.
(This is getting ridiculous. Mo has better numbers than Harris and Allen. This boston hard-on is very tired. I wonder if LeBron is going to do like he did 2 years ago and have an "ankle sprain" so he can't participate in the events [when Z didn't get picked]. I hope so.)
and will likely win the Championship this year.

How are those Bulls doing Fred?
I knew it was only a matter of time before someone brought them up. lol The bulls are totally irrelevant to this discussion of the Cavs winning a title and the East for that matter. They may make the playoffs but thats about it. The difference is i dont have these delusions of grandeur that they are actually going to win an NBA title.

Delusions? The team has the second best record in the league. They are in the argument regardless of what your opinion of the city is. It's delusional to think that they don't have as big a chace to win it as BOS or LA. So, all things considered, I'd take my home team.
Not delusional at all. Not this year. 07? I was a bit delusional there. Not this time. The Cavs have been this good all year, and aren't even healthy.
no whats delusional is you saying they will "likely win the nba championship". Like it's really going to happen. If you had said and "have a chance at winning the nba championship," i'd probably take your opinion on the cavs a bit more seriously. But the fact that you talk about it as if it's already in the bag, you just make most of us LOL and think of you as a homer. And if you want to be a homer of your teams, fine, nothing wrong with that. Just don't surprised if people laugh at you.

You were laughing when I said they'd go to the Finals in 07. So that's fine. I happen to think, after seeing all the teams as they are now, it's likely that the Cavs get it. It's not a partial opinion--the Magic lost their spark plug and Lakers lost their big man. It's a valid argument.
The Lakers are soft without Bynum, And I think we'll get homecourt and beat Boston in the East Finals. If we get to face the West, I think there isn't a matchup I don't like. In fact, I doubt whoever gets there from the East even need 6 games to win it. i just think it'll be my Cavs.
Like it's really going to happen.
^ This is a snide comment that has no basis in reality. It really could happen, and from where I'm sitting, really will happen.
it has no basis of reality? You said they will likely win the championship. I'm saying, you are saying like it's really going to happen, like if they should just stop playing now because it's on the bag. The reality of it is this. Can it happen? Of course it can happen. WIll it happen? Thats another story. I'll take the odds that they don't win the title over the talk that they "likely will".
Fact of the matter is we are barely approaching the half way point of the REGULAR season. None of this stuff about them having the second best record, or teams being banged up, matters come playoff time. If you want to believe the Cavs are likely to win the championship, go ahead. I, along with the rest of the forum will continue to lol at you. And if the Cavs do win the title I will gladly come back here, and say I was wrong. In all honesty I would like to see LeBron win a championship. I like the guy.
BTW stop making shit up about me laughing at you when you said the cavs would go to the finals. I don't see any of that in the threads on SG. In fact my only posts were about the Bulls lol

The 'you' was pointing a tthe whole board, not you particularly lol. And also, it was the 06-07 year, not last year.
And if the Cavs do win the title I will gladly come back here, and say I was wrong.
You're the only one lol
I'm saying, you are saying like it's really going to happen, like if they should just stop playing now because it's on the bag.
Oh no, I'm never doing that again. Not after 95 World Series, 10-6 Browns 07 but loss to the Bengals and many others. I just feel it's more likely than not going to be the Cavs this year. Just because I think it's likely doesn't mean I think it's inevitable.
...I'm not like the Cowboys fans were in the middle of the season before Ho...I mean Romo got hurt. I know better. They really thought no matter what they'd get it. I just think it's likely.
lol Masta makes me not feel sorry for that crappy city known as Cleveland.

I'm so fucking pissed this morning. So I called off of work yesterday to watch the game with my father in law. I smoked a little ganja before the game to get myself mentally ready and he suggested I take these two blue pills he had (still not sure what the fuck they were since he has gout and has millions of different pills) anyway next thing I know my dumbass is waking up at like 10pm and the games over...
