There's one company that's getting rich out of every video game system you buy. IBM chips are at the heart of all three home consoles, from Wii to PS3. While PS3's unique Cell processor is well-known for its supercomputing power, a new book from one of Cell's designers explains how R&D spent on PS3's advanced chip was used in making the Xenon processor for Microsoft's Xbox 360. "The Race for a New Game Machine (https://www.amazon.com/dp/0806531010?tag=prey0f&camp=0&creative=0&linkCode=as4&creativeASIN=0806531010&adid=0G55NWANAMEZEDR624DB&)" from David Shippy and his co-worker Mickie Phipps delves into their time at IBM working on the chips for both of these competing consoles.

Sony approached IBM to create the Cell processor in 2001, with plans to target a Christmas 2005 launch for the PS3. Microsoft approached IBM in 2002, and it appears Sony agreed to let Microsoft not only see early prototypes of Cell, but purchase components as well. "All three of the original partners had agreed that IBM would eventually sell the Cell to other clients. But it does not seem to have occurred to Sony that IBM would sell key parts of the Cell before it was complete and to Sony's primary videogame-console competitor. The result was that Sony's R&D money was spent creating a component for Microsoft to use against it," the Wall Street Journal (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123069467545545011.html) book review summarizes.

While the end result for Cell and Xenon are both quite different, it's ironic to think that Sony may have inadvertently aided its primary competitor. Of course, console success stories are always based on quizzacle corporate decisions. Let's not forget that Sony's first console, PlayStation, was originally a collaboration with Nintendo to make an extension to the SNES.

Funny indeed cause last gen it was the Ps2 with is Disc Reading problems while the Xbox (or atleast mine) was problem free. And this Gen the 360 is having all types of problems while the Ps3 is having little problems.

Coincidence that the 360 was developed by looking over the shoulder of the Ps3....?

You could also look at the comparison where the PS2 was released before the Xbox and had less raw power but ultimately succeeded because of its library.

Now jump to this generation where the Xbox 360 was released a year early and has less power but has been more successful due to its selection of games.

Let me rephrase that, I think the PS3 has caught up to the 360 in games, but because it was such an issue up until 2008, they've been fighting an uphill battle.

True and I agree on all points. I mean to me the issue with the 360 isn't just from a hardware perspective, but they fact they haven't put much emphasis in developing new exclusive IPs. They would much rather buy up the competitions games to go multi-plat and just rest on that.

I think 09', if all works out when it comes to streeting games, will be a big year for Sony since they will be introducing a handful of exclusives. While the 360 on the other hand only has a couple to show.

No doubt it won't change the margin of 360 systems to Ps3, but it terms of games I think Ps3 will ultimately pass them and be on top once again.

I kinda agree

I know of 4 must have games for me in 2009.

Killzone 2, GOW3, Uncharted 2, and of course Madden.

I still haven't bought LBP yet either...man gaming is expensive.
