Arizona Wildcats

Tuscon, AZ - This has been a hectic week for the Wilcats of Arizona. First they defeat a highly favored BYU in the Pioneer Las Vegas Bowl. The mood quickly changed from happy to utter disbelief when Coach Mike Stoops decided not to take the contract offer and instead test the waters of the NFL. This has left many of the players and assistant coaches in dismay. Will recruits rethink their decisions? Will star players leave early. This could be a catastrophic event for this Arizona football team.

Now comes in Coach Sanders. He is a tough but ingenious coach known for getting the best out of his players. He has led many smaller D-2 schools to National Championship games. He will bring along with him his coaching staff along with his offense. In the day and age of spread offenses he plans to implement a pro style offense. Arizona hopes that he will bring them to the top of the Pac-10 and eventually a BCS bid.

Tuscon, AZ - The first game is in the books and if your an Arizona fan you are most likely excited for the season to come. After a scary 1st quarter in which Idaho was tied 14-14. After that however Arizona turned on the jets and never looked back. Riding the back of Xavier Smith, who churned out 280 yards on the ground, Arizona was able to take Idaho to the woodshed 48-21.

Many reporters questioned Coach Sanders decision to leave Smith in for the whole game. He responded, "This is a tune-up game for us. We feel we need to get him to feel comfortable in the offense. If that takes running up the score then so be it."

Willie Tuitama the highly touted senior quarterback did not get much of a chance to show what he could do, but when he did he did it to the best of his ability. Tuitama completed 9 passes for 124 yards and 1 touchdown strike.

The Arizona defense played well forcing 3 turnovers including 2 interceptions by Idaho, quarterback Russell Hill. Of the defense Sanders said, "Considering who we played it's not really that big of a surprise. Let's wait til we play some Pac-10 teams before we begin to talk." The Wildcats host Toledo next week in what looks to be another blowout victory for the Wildcats.

Tuscon, AZ - And Arizona is off to a 2-0 start thanks to Xavier Smith. The Junior running back is leading the team on the ground with over 200 yards in each game. Now this may be due to the lack of talent on the other teams but it is impressive none the less.

Willie Tuitama seems to be getting the short end of the stick in Coach Sanders new offense. With the emphasis mostly on jamming the ball down the other teams throat there isn't much room for him to be attempting passes. "It is definitely a new experience for me, not throwing as much, but I still need to go out there every day and do my best to help this team win. If that means handing it off to Xavier 60 times a game, so be it."

Arizona has one more OOC game against Air Force before they head off to play the tough Pac-10 schedule that awaits them that includes 3 ranked teams, once of which is powerhouse USC. When asked about it, Coach Sanders stated, "We'll worry about that when we get there."

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, CO - Well it looks like it is time for Coach Sanders and his to start thinking about Pac-10 ball. He has a lot to think about with how poorly his defense played today. "I like to play smashmouth football and when we can't stop anyone on defense like today, we can't play our style and it almost bit us in the behind today. They are a good team but they don't belong anywhere near our level."

Willie Tuitama finally got to show his stuff today as he attempted over 30 passes completing 17 of them including 2 touchdown scores. "It feels great to finally get out there and sling the ball around like I know I can. Our offense played great today and it showed what we are capable of doing. Now we have to go out there and do that same thing against the Pac-10 if we want any chance of winning the conference."

The Wildcat star running back, Xavier Smith, was completely shut down running the ball today as he only gained a measly 49 yards on 21 carries. He made up for it though, in the passing game gaining over 100 yards in the air including a 37 yard screen pass that went the distance.

The Wildcat special teams have really began to stick out, most prominently, the Kickoff Return team. It seems that if it isn't going to the house it's getting damn near close. Said B.J. Dennard, "With the great blocking I've been getting, it's really easy to do the things I've done. Coach does a great job getting us prepared and it shows on the field."

Overall a good win for the Wildcats who need to carry the momentum of a 3-0 start into Pac-10 play where they will face some stiff competition.

Pasadena, CA - It looks as though that Arizona's easy out of conference schedule may have done more damage than it did good. Although they started out the season 3-0 they did not get fully prepared for the toughness of the Pac-10. "We weren't ready at all today. Not physically, and definitely not mentally. We're going to go back and fix some mistakes, but don't get me wrong. We just got outplayed today." Those are the words of Coach Sanders.

Much of the Wildcats' lack of success can be put solely on the fact that they can't sustain the run game against good team. Xavier Smith has been relegated to catching passes out of the backfield due to the fact that he only averages around 3 yards a carry when running the ball. "He does a great job making plays in open space. Everyone can see that. Now we just need to do it without having to pass to him."

Willie Tuitama struggled once again throwing a season high 4 interceptions, 3 of which were returned for touchdowns. Those along with a costly kickoff return TD were ultimately the reason for the Wildcat loss. They will need to be much better on offense if they want to compete at all in this tough Pac-10 conference.

Tuscon, AZ - The Wildcats got the win on Saturday. But at what cost? On the 2nd play from scrimmage, star running back, Xavier Smith went down with a torn quad. Xavier Smith will be out for the year. The Wildcats will now have to rely on Quarterback Willie Tuitama and Sophomore Running Back Nic Grigsby.

On to the game now. This was a high scoring, keep you on the edge of your seats type of game. This game came down to the last seconds and was one of those games that whoever had the ball last was going to win. That is exactly what happened as Arizona rumbled into the endzone with just 20 seconds left on the clock. Jake Locker and the deflated Huskies could only sit back and look at the clock with amazement as it seemed like they had just scored a few short moments ago.

Arizona's defense has not played well the last 2 games and some of it seems to be on Coach Sanders. Saying, "It's my fault. I'm not getting them prepared the way that they need to be. We don't have the right gameplan. We have guys out of position. I am to blame for most of it, but of course the players have to have some sort of accountability. They need to take pride in their play."

Arizona faces an easy schedule most of the way with just a couple teams with winning records. Most notably are #10 USC and #5 Arizona State. Those teams both pose giant threats to Arizona and may decide their fate. The rest of the schedule however, is surprisingly easy. Both Cal and Oregon are disappointing so far as they have 3 combined wins between the two. Next up for Arizona is the lowly Cal who has won only 1 game. Will this be a trap game? We will see next Saturday.

Palo Alto, CA - It's quite obvious after this one that Arizona overlooked Stanford quite a bit. But even with that said this score doesn't even come close to showing how bad it actually was. During the game it seemed as though Stanford was up 100-0 the entire way.

"This is embarrassing." Coach Sanders said, "Just flat out embarrassing. We came out with no life and got the shit kicked out of us again and again by a far weaker team on paper. I guess that's why you play the games and with performances like this it's no surprise we haven't won a Pac-10 Championship in who knows how long."

Willie Tuitama played another terrible game throwing 3 interceptions. To his defense he had absolutely no time to make decisions as there was a Cardinal player in his face at all times. The Cardinal had 5 different guys record a sack and also ended up with 8 tackles in the backfield.

The highly heralded Arizona running game coming into the regular season has quite frankly disappeared. They haven't had a 100 yard rusher yet in Pac-10 competition. "There is no reason that Willie should be attempting 40 passes a game. We need to be pounding it out on the ground and controlling the clock. Not this silly air it out offense. Who do we think we are Oklahoma?"

Arizona faces Cal next week in a battle of lowly Pac-10 teams. Both teams have losing records in the Pac-10 and are looking to rebound to make a push for a top spot. Cal is led by star running back Jahvid Best. Which team will redeem themselves next week?

Tuscon, AZ - Where oh where did Arizona's defense go? That seemed to be the question after another poor start to this game. Cal opened up the game with a quick touchdown and at one point took a commanding 24-7 lead. This is where the heart of the Wildcats showed up.

Maybe Coach Sanders said something to them at halftime. We'll never know, but whatever happened really fired up the Wildcats as they outscored the Golden Bears 29-6 in the second half on way to their 2nd Pac-10 victory on the year.

Willie Tuitama finally had a "break out game" as he threw for over 300 yards and 3 touchdowns. Said Coach Sanders, "When you have balance in your offense, it makes it extremely hard do beat you. If we have Willie playing like this and with the running game we hope to bring back, we could be a force to be reckoned with."

It's not to say the defense has completely gone away. It's just not the defense we are used to seeing so far this season. One of the major faults has been their ability to take the ball away. They are currently -7 in that department, and 112 in the country. They are going to have trouble winning games if they have those kind of numbers the rest of the year. Especially next week when they play #7 USC at home.
