So i'm finally getting back into the gaming scene now that I just aquiried a PS3 I figured most of you guys here are in the know and I would be able to get all my questions answered in one place instead of busting my ass googling..
1. I have an older HDTV (No HDMI hookup) and a HD Direct Tv box what do I need to be able to get the best quality on the BluRay and PS3 games?
2. Do I need to purchase something to get online like Xbox live?
3. Buddy of mine has a sweet hook up any game half off... I'm thinking of getting at least four games... Madden is a given but for basketball is 2K9 or Live the way to go? What other two games are must haves?
Anything else I need to know?
Thanks a bunch to anyone who takes the time to help....

1.Well without an HDMI hookup, the best you can get would be to use the component cables, which are NOT included with the system.
2. Nope, just sign up for PSN and youre good to go
3. 2K9, BY FAR! Also id pick up Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune and Resistance 1 & 2 are all good titles.

NCAA 09 and get in my Online Dynasty
Yea, get a good set of component cables. With HDMI, it doesn't really matter what the quality is because it's a digital signal so you're either getting it or your not. It's not the same with component cables. Just don't waste your money on Monster cables. Python cables are really good and they're cheap. Also, Monoprice.com has great cables at great prices.
Python Cables on ebay (http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=m38.l1313&_nkw=python+component&_sacat=See-All-Categories)
www.monoprice.com
If your surround sound has an optical in, you need that for true dolby digital 5.1. Some of those Python cables have the optical attached to the component, so that would be perfect.
As far as games, Uncharted, MGS4, Little Big Planet, SOCOM, and Killzone is coming very soon.

1. Componenet Cables
2. Nada, just sign up and enjoy.
3. I used to get rid of the Basketball games I bought about two weeks after getting them. I bought 2k9 and will never trade it in. Except for 2k10. It is the best basketball game ever. Also, MLB The Show 09 will be a must buy for any kind of baseball gamer.

I will say this about Metal Gear Solid 4, i personally feel it is the best game this gen, however im a big fan of the series. What im trying to say is the game is a HUGE fan service. It seems as tho the game was made only for the fans of the series, so if you do get it and havent played any of the other 3, i highly suggest downloading the free Metal Gear Database and reading through the key points of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd game.

Thanks for all the help guys.
So last night I fire up the PS3 and attempted to get online this is the second time I turned it on. As of right now I don't have a wireless router so I hooked up my DSL modem to the PS3 via an ethernet cable and the modem to my phone line but am unable to get online. I had Madden 09 in at the time and the system said it detected and update and would need to download I press ok and the screen goes completely black and the PS3 appears to be doing nothing... any thoughts on this? I ended up playing a franchise offline after that...

Is there anyone else signal you can pick up through wireless? Sounds like it was looking to download the update, but had no way to DL it. I'm also assuming you went through the internet connection settings on your ps3 with no luck?

Yea I did the test internet connection and it went to a screen and just sat there for a while.....
On that note I looked on Ebay and found wireless routers for alot cheaper than I expected from what I've read alot of people use NetGear.... heres a dumb question im sure but how important is the amount of Mbps a router has there is one im looking at for about 30$ that has 54mbps or another one that is about 15$ more expensive but has a 300mbps.... is the diffrence that much noticeable?
:)

I'd opt for the 300 mbps. 54megs/sec doesn't sound very fast. If you don't mind running the network cable, you should definitely be able to connect though. Get a hold of HAZEs monkey ass. He should know where a FAQ on this shit is.

Think we could sticky one? Raider is having some difficulties connecting to the internet. I think if more people saw it he could resolve his issues quicker. Undoubtedly there will be more threads of the sort in the future.

The fastest the PS3 can go in an "optimal" wireless environment is 54 mbs/sec (Wireless G). The Wireless N Routers state 300 Mbs/sec but never reach it (yet). It's still a new technology so it's not there yet. They may however increase the range a little bit. How far is the router going to be from the PS3? How many rooms are between them? I think you'll probably be ok with the Wireless G. And I would recommend Linksys over D-Link.
Another thing to take into account is how many other wireless networks are in your area. I've been in this apartment for 5 years and when I first moved in there were like 3 networks in my area. Now, there's about 12-15 of them. Most are using the same channel. I switched my channel to channel 11 but there are still a few people using that channel. I think the 3 they recommend are 1,6, and 11.

Just saw this thread, doh!
My computer is currently in the kitchen right next to the living room (house) so hopefully range will not be a problem. I already ordered the Netgear 54 Mbps via Ebay so hopefully it will be here soon... is there anything special I need to do on my PS3 to connect.... I heard I can surf the web via PS3 if that is true do I have full access just like on my PC?
Once again mucho gracias guys can't wait to whoop all ur collective asses online once I get there... Terr0r can assess to that :P

Iv never been able to get a good connection with my PS3. I think the built in WiFi adapter for the PS3 just sucks. I have my 360 and my PS3 next to each other and the best connection i can get on my PS3 is 58-60%, yet my 360 has no problems, full connection. Maybe i dont have something set up right in my PS3?
