Fucking Minnesota. Starts the game late while I'm in class. Just because they are in a shitty dome and can't enjoy the sun on what is supposed to be Opening DAY. Might miss Griffey's first at bat back in a Seattle uniform.

SARASOTA, Fla. -- Virgil Vasquez gave up three runs in 4 2/3 innings, and Dave Davidson was charged with a blown save as a collection of the Pirates' top prospects lost to Manatee Community College, 6-4, at McKechnie Field in Bradenton.

Steve Pearce homered for the Pirates.

Tony Mitchell went 2 for 3 with a double and three runs for Manatee, which won for the first time in 11 exhibition meetings.

The game ended with Manatee left fielder Nick Graham made a diving catch near the foul line to take away a potential tying hit from Henry Henry with runners on first and second.

"I was so happy I caught it," Graham said. "I was ecstatic. It was awesome."

basically, I can't root for my Indians anymore, because the Dolans suck balls and Shapiro can't pull the trigger on anything good.

Oh and that opening day gram slam by Hanley was pretty sweet.

Fuck we should have won that game. I hate losing it in the ninth, and if we don't have Felix or Bedard on the mound it will be hard to win games. We blew a Bedard start, now we have lard ass Carlos Silva on the mound tomorrow. Hopefully our offense steps up.

They've given up 42 runs in 4 games.

MaSTA SoLIDUS

Who wins more games:

The Cavs (regular season + postseason) or the Indians (same)?

I'd say the Cavs.

I also cant believe Pavano's ERA is higher than the amount of points the Cavs have given up to teams.

Damn Indians.

To top it off, they wouldn't let fans back into the game after leaving (MASSIVE rain delay). And likely won't refund or even credit fans. Worst management in Cleveland Sports right now.

LVradio
04-10-2009, 10:47 PM
I noticed how there was NOBODY in the stands after the delay. I think the Indians are doing a lot of deals for dirt cheap tickets this year, probably because they're going to suck.

Well, the Indians would have to be above .500 to win more than the Cavs. So I would agree. Although the last time they started 0-3 was '96.

MannyBeltre
04-12-2009, 10:44 PM
Bedard today, if he pitches as well as he has these first two games and we are out, come deadline time we can expect the mothership of prospects.

However I would much prefer him staying and us making a run, we have played incredibly well these first seven games. Hope we can keep it up. USS Mariner is right when it comes to outfield defense, makes a huge difference.

MannyBeltre

If Morrow can hold up and Aardsma, Kelly, Lowe, Corky, and Jak can provide just solid setup then this team could go places.

Also need Silva to step up and make sure Lopey and Yuni continue to hit the ball well and we got a solid club.

I really like Rob Johnson behind the plate the other day, will be interesting to see the future there with Clement and Adam Moore in the mix as well.

But get to go to Opening Day tomorrow, can't wait for Jr's introduction.

One of the umpires working Thursday's Cardinals (http://www.fannation.com/tags/show_tag/56)-Cubs (http://www.fannation.com/tags/show_tag/48) game reportedly said he intends to inform the Commissioner's Office there was physical contact involved in Milton Bradley (http://www.fannation.com/tags/show_tag/3448)'s ejection, meaning Bradley could be subject to a suspension. The Chicago Tribune reported late Thursday night that second-base umpire Larry Iassogna said a report would be filed because it was a "contact" incident. Bradley was ejected in the sixth inning by home-plate umpire Larry Vanover after a called third strike and a brief but heated verbal exchange. Iassogna declined comment when asked how Bradley made contact with Vanover, the Tribune reported.

Awesome game yesterday. Only game that I have been to that beats it is the game against the Red Sox back in 2000 that went to the 19th and Mike Cameron hit the game winning home run.

But the team just showed so much heart out there. Been awhile since my voice has gone horse at a Mariners game.

Redsox and Yankees tonight on ESPN. Let's go Redsox.

Also has anyone seen Kansas City's pitching staff eat batters alive lately?

Also Seattle is off to a good start, but that really dosen't surprise me. It was just a matter of Seattle staying healthy and playing consistently because they have the talent.

2 games without Manny, 2 losses.

Ugh

I think they will still make the playoffs. They have to much talent not to make the post season.

Matt Kemp, Andre Either and James Loney are a strong young unit. Players like Casey Blake and Orlando Hudson add great leadership even without Manny.

Correct me if I am wrong but Hudson leads the team with 43 hits thus far.

Not to mention the pitching is getting better. Eric Stults threw a gem tonight against the Giants.

Jays have a legit shot at the postseason this year.

The Yanks just arent that good and are too old, and the Sox have issues with Ortiz and whatnot...
Plus, by the end of May/June their rotation should be: Halladay, Romero, Janssen, Cecil, Richmond which is pretty damn good, and then come September they could get Marcum and/or McGowan back...
their hitting is much better, they could potentially trade some of their pitching/bullpen staff to get a permanent 1B upgrade or something too.

I would be surprised if the Jays didnt at least win the AL Wild Card.

Could be...now I'm not talking shit, but every time the Jays look like they're postseason material, they fall apart in the latter portion of August, just about the time when NY and BOS start to get things rolling...as a Yankee fan, I honestly DO like what I see from Toronto, Aaron Hill's hitting .339 and 10 HRs, plus Wells and Rios always put up strong numbers. X-Factor for the Jays though? Scott Rolen, when healthy? he's deadly, not just with his glove.

Ya, congrats to him. He pitched an outstanding game.

I honestly dont know if we will ever see another one. Of the top stud pitchers right now, Sabathia IMO is the only one with a legitimate chance, and even his isn't very good. It'll be interesting to see the next generation come in and see if the pitchers of the future have similar results.

Pretty dirty that the Braves released Glavine. Give him the respect of letting him play out the year and giving him a shot.

Is that the same respect he gave the Braves when he turned down their contract offers to go the Mets for more money?

They're trying to win this year and in the future. Getting Hanson in the rotation now makes them the best team possible, and they think with McLouth and with the Mets and Phils not exactly setting the world on fire that they can make a run in the East.

Glavine was a great player for the Braves, but he's the past.

"After spending Friday contacting a number of wildlife and animal organizations, the Indians concluded that increased nesting on flat rooftop buildings in Cleveland's Flats district has led to the ballpark's problems.

The Flats used to be a district full of bars, restaurants and nightclubs along the Cuyahoga River, but now sits mostly desolate. Except, of course for the gulls, long a common sight along the shore of the roughly Vermont-sized lake."

Report: Sosa tested positive in 2003

NEW YORK -- Sammy Sosa tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug in 2003, The New York Times reported Tuesday on its Web site, the latest in a string of baseball stars implicated in the sport's steroids scandal of the past decade.

The Times said Sosa is one of 104 players who tested positive in baseball's anonymous 2003 survey, which has been the subject of a protracted court fight. The paper did not identify the drug.

It cited lawyers with knowledge of the 2003 drug-testing results and reported they spoke on condition of anonymity because they did not want to publicly discuss material under court seal.

There were more Cubs fans than Nats fans at the game. The Nats after Willingham in the 5 hole are just terrible.

Really impressed by Nyjer Morgan - it looks like trading Milledge to the Pirates for Morgan was a good move for the Nats in the long run.

When you have the best rotation in baseball at the moment, the leader in avg and the the guy who is second in the league in homers, we could do more damage than some think. Don't forget the best outfield defense in baseball.

I still think it would in best interest for the team long term to trade some of the guys, but if they decide to stick with it we could make it close.

MannyBeltre
07-24-2009, 10:29 AM
yay, Holliday is on my fantasy team and this should help me out.

But Tdoggy, here's what USSMariner said about the trade.

Most of us would be walking away from this one with smiles on our faces just because we rid ourselves of the enigma that is Yuniesky Betancourt. It’s a little odd that we also happen to be trading him to a team with a history of shortstop enigmas, and in a city with a storied barbecue scene to boot, but while Royals fans will be left to puzzle over the aftermath, we came out pretty good even with the cash sent their way.

Daniel Cortes was a seventh-round pick of the White Sox in 2005 out of a California high school, and has a legitimate arm that regularly sits in the low-90s and can hit the mid-90s. The middle of the plate, however, proves to be problematic for him as his walk rate is consistently between three and four+ for his career. On top of that, he’s had a weak season in which his command has been even worse than usual, with more walks and fewer Ks. He doesn’t have much of a change-up and has some trouble with left-handers stemming from that, but his curveball grades quite nicely and he’s still only twenty-two, and pitching in double-A. If he isn’t a starter, he could be a worthy reliever if they get the kinks ironed out. Commenter Slurve also found an old story that would suggest that his overall makeup is pretty good too.

Derrick Saito will be regarded by some as a throw-in, being a 5’9 lefty with college experience who is merely putting together some good numbers in the Midwest League, but I wouldn’t undersell him. When he was relieving in college, he could hit 97 mph on the gun, and offset this with a curveball that ranked among the best in the conference. He has all the pitches to start, it’s just a question of durability I suppose, but at worst, he could be an interesting left-on-left reliever. Southpaws don’t hit him well, with just a .212 average against and extra-base hits that you could count on one hand. He strikes them out at a rate of 11.30 per nine, but his walk rate is over three and three-quarters, even after some significant improvements over last season.

Both arms have some issues, but they have upside. After all of the Mariners continued efforts over the years with Yuni, no one can say they didn’t try with him. Whatever happens from here, I’m pleased with the haul we got.

There is a big debate as to whether the deal is for Hardy or for Escobar. Seattle Times says its Escobar, USS Mariner says never would Milwaukee give him up and that it is for Hardy.

I hope its for Escobar, I like Hardy but he will be a one year stop gap. With this team falling off the face of the earth this weekend, we need to build for the future.

It will be interesting to see what Washburn does after that. He loves it here now and our pitching coach and has said he wants to re-sign, but Wisconsin is home. If he comes on for cheaper than before I'm all for it.

They need more than one questionable starter, that's for sure. After Gallardo their rotation is godawful. They needed Parra to progress and they needed Looper or Suppan to transform into good pitchers. Neither happened.

Plus I'm not sure what Macha's thinking with his lineups. Why is McGeehee sitting behind Bill Hall and Craig Counsell? When you know the pitching is bad, you've got to get your best hitters in the game - having your best defenders in the field won't help when every starter except Gallardo is giving up 4 earned every game. They just have to try and score more runs.

yes, macha's lineups are definitely my biggest problem with him. he favors his veteran players way too heavily, despite the fact that most of them (kendall, hall, etc.) suck. whenever he puts kendall leading off i want to murder someone. he also really misused gamel when he was up, giving playing time to the "best third baseman in the league" in bill hall. counsell's actually been having a really good year, so i don't mind him so much.

something really needs to be done in the offseason so the brewers can try and make another legit run while they still have braun, gallardo, fielder, etc.

Jeff Clement was pulled in the third inning in a minor league game with no injury, a deal happened and no one know what yet.

Supposedly there were rumors that We would send Morrow and Clement to Cleveland, they send Lee and Martinez to Tampa, and the Rays send us Kazmir and someone.

I would love it for us, but that seems like way too much to give up for Clement and Morrow. I don't think Clement has much of a future, and Morrow has not performed well, but still has value.

Also the Mariners and Brewers talked today, supposedly Jack want Rickie since he drafted him and everything, I would go crazy if that happened. But you can't trade players on the DL, so something would have to happen.

But the Brewers, Yankees, Rangers, and Phillies scouted Wash tonight and he put in another great performance. Gotta love his trade value.

Manny remember when everybody in their mother just wanted Washburn gone for nothing? lol

I would be the happiest man alive if we got Kazmir though. Tampa is also getting a good deal too. I haven't followed non-Mariners baseball much this year, but Martinez was a very good player at least, and Lee is still a very good pitcher. Clement and Morrow have both been disappointments and I don't think they'd ever be anything useful in Seattle. Better to trade them while they still have somewhat of a "hot prospect" tag, and maybe they will pan out somewhere else.

I've always had a boner for Kazmir though. I'm surprised there are at least rumors of such a big deal with the series against Cleveland we just had lol. And even Felix was fucking up.

MannyBeltre
07-29-2009, 08:37 AM
What I like about the deal is that they can say that its for the future and for now. Kazmir is still young and someone who could be a top pitcher, and the prospect would be Reid Brignac who is a highly rated shortstop prospect. So he could take over and get rid of Cedeno who is good defensively, but couldn't hit for anything.

Oh and dmull, looks like your Brewers are throwing in the towel this season. They are pulling out of Washburn talks, lucky you. I was really hoping for Weeks lol.

I don't understand the point of that trade.

A career .690 OPS, 31 year old shortstop for a young .800+ OPS potential catcher/DH. Snell's numbers might get a boost in Seattle, but he's little improvement over Vargas or Olson or Smith.

I'd rate Seattle's playoff chances this season as slim at best, so why they'd give up Clement and prospects for Wilson escapes me.

Clement has no future here, and he is not even a catcher. He is a dh/1b and we don't need that, we have Branyan.

Wilson is maybe the best defensive ss in the league. They plan on keeping Wilson long term and Snell has the potential to be very good.

Everyone is rating this as a huge win for Seattle.

SheriffBooth
07-29-2009, 01:09 PM
Wow, if "Everyone" thinks its a huge win, it must be.

Here's Keith Law's analysis of Wilson and Snell:

I imagine Seattle's motivation for acquiring Wilson and apparently picking up his $8.4 million option for 2010 is based on his defensive value; Wilson is one of the best defensive shortstops in the majors, ranking at or near the top of National League shortstops in every advanced defensive metric this year. Wilson is, of course, a terrible offensive player, and he's not going to be any less terrible in the better league. He's also 31 and has lost what speed he once had, so his defensive abilities are much more likely to decline in the future than they are to improve or even stay at this level. Seattle has made strides in the standings this year by emphasizing defense, but the thing about loving defense and finding it to be an undervalued asset is that if you pay Wilson $8.4 million, it's not an undervalued asset anymore.

The Mariners also get wild card Ian Snell, he of the million-dollar arm and 10-cent makeup. Snell has starter's stuff but is not a big or physical guy, has trouble keeping his delivery together for 100 pitches, and hasn't shown the temperament or concentration required to be a starter. A player can certainly grow up or see some improvement in things like focus or feel for pitching, but Snell also looks like a starter who would make a good convert to relief work, which, as it turns out, is something of a specialty of the Mariners' front office.

MannyBeltre
07-29-2009, 01:23 PM
I was referencing the talk radio I was just listening to. Tim K also liked the deal, and USS Mariner is okay with it, but like it more now that we know the Pirates are paying the vast majority of Wilson and Snell's contract.

But anyway you spin it, Wilson is much better than Cedeno/Betancourt and Snell will be an improvement for whenever he is called up.

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict Washburn's numbers the rest of the way head towards his 3 year average (ie 4.5+ ERA and 1.35+ WHIP). And with 80 or so innings left on the season, that means 5+ ERA and 1.5+ WHIP for the Tigers.

Seattle got out of Washburn at just the right time.

MannyBeltre
07-31-2009, 10:01 AM
We got two very good pitchers out of it, and one who is 23 and already has major league experience. Heck of a trade pulled by Jack.

Robles has pitched well in the minors and appears to be a k machine, while French will move into our rotation right away and is more of a flyball pitcher which fits Safeco and our outfield defense.

Basically we traded an old Jarrod Washburn for a 23 year old Washburn with better upside and a promising relief arm.

I appreciate what Washburn has done over the last season and a half, I'll be happy if he comes back here in free agency for a smaller contract. Was at Safeco for his one hitter, he really grew to like it here but this season is done and we need to build for the future.

Hopefully the Giants take someone off the 25-man roster soon and Freddy is able to go by tomorrow. I've got upper deck tickets and it would be awesome to see him play his first game as a Giant. Also get to see new Giant Ryan Garko and watch Lincecum pitch. Tomorrow is gonna be a great day. :)

We gave up way to much; Poreda and Richard are going to be studs, and Peavy's going to be out for another month or so. Plus he costs an outrageous amount of money.

Evidently that "promising" lefty I referenced earlier is much more special than I thought...

Everybody is focusing on Luke French, the 6-foot-4 lefty starter acquired from the Detroit Tigers this morning in the Jarrod Washburn trade. Larry Stone has an excellent rundown of French and all of his pros and cons in his most recent blog post.

But my sources in Detroit tell me the real key to this trade was the 20-year-old Venezuelan in Class A ball, Mauricio Robles. The fact that he made the Venezuelan team at the WBC tells you a lot.

His strikeout numbers tell you more.

Since advancing to High A ball, he's got 40 in 35 innings. One of my sources described him as "easily a top-five prospect in the entire Tigers system.''

That's not Top-5 in pitching. That's in everything. At age 20.

"I guarantee you this is what made Jack take the deal over what the other guys were offering,'' one source said of GM Jack Zdurtiencik.

Here is a story in the Detroit News bracing Tigers fans to be ready to regret losing Robles in a few years.

Robles is a 5-foot-10 lefty who can throw in the mid-90s and is still developing. Did I mention that he's lefthanded? That combo of southpaw and power at such a young age is bound to get attention.

The Detroit story I posted compares Robles to Jair Jurrjens of the Atlanta Braves. He's a guy the Tigers traded to Atlanta two seasons ago. Jurrjens has now become one of the better starters in the National League, with a 2.69 ERA and 134 innings pitched at age 23.

French is a major league starter, but projects more towards the back end of the rotation. I'm told he could eventually become a spot starter, long man type, but we'll just have to see. He hasn't been going all that deep into games, which is common for pitchers breaking into the majors.

But from what I'm hearing, he was just secondary.

"This deal has Jack Z.'s fingerprints all over it,'' my source told me. "This Robles kid is exactly the type of guy he likes to go after. I have no doubt that if he didn't get Robles, this deal would not have been done.''

Washburn, by the way, has been named as next Tuesday's starter by the Tigers. Detroit was in desperate need of a lefty given the Dontrelle Willis fiasco. Comerica Park plays better to lefties than just about any in the bigs. There are a few great teams that have had championship runs without a lefty starter, but not many. The 1984 Tigers won a World Series and the great 1954 Indians went to one without a southpaw in the rotation. But that's about it the last 60 years.

Wow, how times have changed. A year ago in May, Washburn was destroyed at Comerica in what may have been the worst outing of his life. Now, Comerica is his home park.

By the way, for those of you saying the Mariners should have held on to Washburn, tried to extend him and then taken a Type B compensation pick had he left as a free-agent, that would not have worked.

First off, he makes $10.3 million this season and to get the pick, he'd have to be offered arbitration. Had he accepted, a very likely outcome, he'd get a certain raise to anywhere from $12 million and up. That's Roy Halladay money.

So, no. The Mariners were not going to get the pick. Would they have re-signed him? Who knows? Obviously, the Mariners felt they were better off dealing him and taking their chances this winter.

By the way, as an aside to all of this, the Tigers, and the Red Sox, are said to have inquired about the availability of Felix Hernandez, according to Jon Heyman of SI. I can confirm the Detroit end of that. But there is no evidence that Seattle did any of the approaching. Still, as we all talked about on the blog this past week, this is how baseball teams think and try to get an edge. Other teams now realize the Hernandez situation is going to become an issue for the Mariners within the next 12 months.

Tigers fans should delight in the Jarrod Washburn trade.
For the next two months.

After that, prepare to take a long, anguished bite on a lead bullet, because Mauricio Robles has a chance at being for Seattle what Jair Jurrjens has been for the Atlanta Braves.

Robles, a left-hander, is that good.

Fans don't pay much attention to the minor leagues, particularly to the lower rungs, but they should -- and for this reason.

Robles is 20 years old. He was promoted earlier this year from Single A West Michigan to Single A Lakeland. That's a big step for a kid who can't yet buy a drink.

And yet he has flourished. He has 40 strikeouts in 35 innings and only 14 walks. He had a 4-2 record and a 3.60 earned-run average.

He would have been pitching next year at Double A Erie and probably a year or so later in Detroit, barring injury.

That's why the Mariners happily sent Washburn to Detroit rather than bite on any of the other drooling suitors who wanted to pry away Washburn for the remainder of this season (he becomes a free agent this autumn).

The Mariners wanted Robles. Luke French, the other pitcher the Tigers included in today's deal, is a solid, light-tossing finesse pitcher who has a role in the big leagues, probably in long relief.

But it was Robles that made today's deal possible. And it will be Robles that Tigers fans may dread having lost in the years ahead.

They did get a lot of talent back, half of which is former 1st or 2nd rounders. As a Sox fan, I'm worried about them 3 years from now. With all the pitching they got in return, they could have one of the best rotations in baseball.

Just read an article about the trade and am not really concerned with giving up Robles to get a Washburn. He was 8-6 in single A ball with an over 4 ERA. Even if he is this great talent he still has a long way to go to make the majors. The tiger's aren't going to be like the Yankees and Red Sox competing for a title every year. Their current window is probabaly closing a little bit and if Washburn can give a chance at a title i'll take it. Even if Robles is all of the sudden the next Nolan Ryan.

FYI: you can read the article here (http://detroithustle.wordpress.com/2009/08/01/breaking-down-jarrod-mfing-washburn/)

lol

Masterson is going to be a stud from Boston; he pitched really well last year in their playoff run, and Carrasco from the Philly deal is a really advanced prospect and was Philly's best prospect pitcher not named Happ or Drabek.

Not to mention LaPorta (from the Sabathia trade) is going to be an outstanding 1b or corner outfielder someday.

Not to mention they weren't going anywhere soon anyways, might as well trade the guys you can right now and get the most value you can from them.

MannyBeltre

I'm a big fan of Masterson, I think he could be a great #3 or a good #2. Hard to come by in trades, especially a guy his age with big league experience.

http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/news/story?id=4502934

While celebrating a come-from-behind, ninth-inning win over the San Francisco Giants on Thursday, the Chicago Cubs couldn't avoid yet another "Cubby Occurrence."

First baseman Derrek Lee scored the game-tying run ahead of Jeff Baker, whose two-out, two-strike home run off San Francisco closer Brian Wilson put the team in line for the win.

As Lee and Baker were mobbed by teammates in the dugout, relief pitcher Angel Guzman slapped the side of Lee's helmet, causing Lee to experience neck spasms that forced him to come out of the game for defense in the bottom of the ninth.

Lee has missed numerous games over the years with neck and back spasms, after initially suffering the injury in a home-plate collision in 2006.

After the game Thursday, Lee told team personnel that he'd be in the lineup Friday night, but the team's training staff could insist that he sit out a game or two.

Manager Lou Piniella coined the term "Cubby Occurrence" to explain strange happenings that may have factored into the organization going more than 100 years without winning a World Series.

It's not likely, but I'm really rooting hard for the Braves to make up the 3 games they need on the Rockies to squeak into the NL Wildcard. With Chipper and Cox both nearing retirement I'd really like to see them make a couple of more playoff runs before they hang 'em up.
