Over this past year I have developed a love for the game and have taken some time to learn exactly how it all works. I played back in the day up until high school but never paid attention to any professional or international games.

I know there are some other guys here who like the game as well like Neph, Tdoggy, and Fort so I bet we could have some good discussion.

Kind of to kick it off, my European team Bristol City gave up another 90th minute goal to lose possible points. No shot at promotion any more, sucks.

And fucking Federico Macheda, going to be the next bitch of the Prem. Fuck Man U.

Anyone else see the highlights from Bayern's 5-1 loss a week ago? The final goal by Grafite was a jaw-dropper.

This is the one I'm talking about:

Dunno, just sort of played Fifa with them awhile back to build them up and grew attached to the players and knew the entire team to where I became a fan, check their stuff every day now. Kind of strange how it happened but I like being a fan of a championship team, always fighting for promotion is exciting.

G, Sounders get 27,000+ a night, no one really gives a fuck about the NBA right now. The league sucks, speaks volumes that MLS expansion can sell out and the NBA's ticket prices, Clay Benett was able to scare away the fan base, and the league's style play in general all caused the demise of the team here. The NBA is a distant fourth behind MLB, NFL, and MLS based on how the league is run. I didn't really pay attention to the MLS till the Sounders came, but the league is becoming increasingly profitable and the quality of play has increased. Something the NBA has not experienced for awhile.

I can go on forever about the NBA so I will end it now. Soccer has made me much happier than the NBA ever did the last few years, I can actually appreciate a game where the athletes play hard throughout the entire game and is more of a passionate sporting event as opposed to an overdone Las Vegas show.

Once again I'm done.

Fuck David Stern.

Yes me, this game's so complete !
Did someone warch Barça-Chelsea ? Nice game, Barcelona played so well, unfortunately, they didn't reach to make the "last move" as we say in Europe ! Good coaching by Hiddink but I don't appreciate it, there's no interest to come in the field no to play I think... But Chelsea must play in Stamford Birdge so Barça will get space !

Which team do you support ? I love Barcelona since I'm 5 because my family is from Barcelona, I do love Arsenal and Bordeaux too. Which is the best team in MLS ? And the best players ?

Tdoggy

I started playing the fm game this year and it's just amazing. I support Milan. You like bourdeaux, have you seen gourcuff play?

Ossia
05-01-2009, 05:53 AM
I've watched him play, with France, Rennes (his first pro-team), Milan and Bordeaux, he's just amazing. He has technical skills and mental (I say in mental tactic) skills just much better than the others in L1 and second zone europeans players...
I hope Bordeaux will can pay his liberation price (€ 15M).

Milan is evoluating this year, it will be a great team as soon as there won't be all these old players...

Tdoggy
05-01-2009, 09:57 AM
If Gourcuff stays in France I'll be pretty upset. Dinho is just not cutting it at Milan, so I'm hoping that Gourcuff goes back to unseat him. If Ancelotti will even play him lol.

Ossia

I think he won't play a lot if he comes back in San Siro because Ancelotti (if he is not fired) will prefer put in the field Ronaldinho or Kaka (psychology of the name as I call it with friends ; is that there are some players who play only because they USED to be good you know such as Juninho in Lyon, Ambrosini-Nesta-Kaladze in Milan and a lot of other players...).

Do you follow "la Ligue 1" ? If you do, which team do you like, which players, why ? I'm interesting of the point of view you have about our championship...

PS : You probably know it but L1 is considered (in France and in Europe) as a bad championship, whereas tactically and defensivally speacking, he dominates the world...

lol finally, I told you in October

To Ossia, I have always liked PSG in Ligue 1 and my current FM game is with them, Do you think Sakho will turn out to be as good as people say he will be? I don't want to see a Micah Richards like collaspe.Even though I can't watch any PSG games, I always go on the PSG website and read their articles in French(It takes me a while to read a full article, but I am getting better).

Edit:

How are Saivet and Feghouli doing? they are supposed to be the future stars of French football, Are any big clubs going after Feghouli? he seems too good of a prospect to remain with Grenoble

Tdoggy
05-01-2009, 08:37 PM
Lol yea thanks to you and warrior. I didn't even try the demo, I just bought it in December. Tried to play it, got overwhelmed, and just stopped. After I moved in late january, it's all I had and still all I have to do on an internetless computer. I fell in love when I put the time in lol. It's just amazing, save for the repetitive and unengaging stories, pressers, etc

Ossia
05-02-2009, 05:32 AM
Well, let's speack about french prospects (or L1 prospects) :

Sakho, firstly, he has a tremendous potential and played a lot of games in two years, he can paly both central and left back whereas he is better at the center. Then, Le Guen, lets him play and develop so he increases his level at each game. He is as good as Richards and will be much better ! Probably one of the best central defenders in Europe. Each time I see him play, he is amazing !

Feghouli is followed by Marseille, Paris ans Bordeaux, he has got a technical level very interesting, he might be a good player if he plays often...

Saivet, doesn't play a lot with Bordeaux but it's normal, he's very young and at his position there are Chamakh, Cavenaghi, Gouffran, Bellion... But I'm sure he'll become a good forward.

I don't know if you know this guy but he's one of the best keeper in our league. He's colombian, he is 20. His name is David Ospina, Nice bought him this summer to take the Lloris's place, better than Lloris, shows a impressive level.

Then, there's Eden Hazar, an offensive midfelder of Lille. He's 18 and dominates de L1, he made an assist and scored a goal against Lyon. Just too fast, too clever, too technic for major part of L1 defenders.
This year Hazard statistics : 30 games-6 goals and 4 assistances with Lille !
Plus 4 selection with Belgium national team !

Ask me for indications about european football (team, players, prospects, coaches...)

Just one thing, why are you a PSG fan ? I suppose you enjoy Sessegnon and Hoareau don't you ?

Jaguar, you can see each PSG game on streaming (http://www.myp2p.eu/ or http://www.rojadirecta.org/)

jaguar8311
05-02-2009, 06:48 AM
That's a great question, but one that I can't really answer, I have never liked to cheer for the top teams in any sport so that threw out Lyon and Marseille. I also have always had a thing for their jersies lol, kinda stupid I know but in North America, you don't get much access to much european football besides English on TV.

I don't know too much about individual players on the team because all I can see is stats but Hoarau seems like a Peter Crouch like player. I don't want to get too attached to Sessegnon because judging by his performances, there will be a lot of clubs that will want him this summer. My favourite player on PSG is Rothen, from what little I have seen of him, he is gifted in passing, crossing and set pieces.

I admit I have not heard of Ospina, and I always thought that Lloris was going to be next great goalkeeper along with Akinfeev. Eden Hazard I do know of, he is one of many young Belgian superstars. I could really see Belgium doing lots of damage in a couple of years.

Thanks for the links! will check out later, but now I am going to watch Portsmouth and Arsenal

Ossia
05-02-2009, 07:31 AM
Yes Rothen is a great passer, good established player in L1... In my opinion Hoareau's better than Crouch, got less technical skill but more mobility up in front and more finishing skills... Tell me about Portsmouth and Arsenal once is finished please man.

jaguar8311
05-02-2009, 09:17 AM
3-0 Arsenal, It was a good first half, David James let in a really bad goal on a header by Bendtner, it went straight at him but it went through his hands. A slide tackle on Arshavin was called a penalty even though the defender clearly hit the ball first.

Even though Fabianski got a clean sheet, I thought that Arsenal played really poor defense, they allowed the Portsmouth strikers to go unmarked, but it was very bad finishing on Portsmouths part.

The one that hit Eto'o(I believe it was Eto'o) in the armpit? No. The one that hit Pique on the wrist? Yes.

However, that no call on Pique was not the reason Chelsea lost. Iniesta was. I don't want to hear it from any Chelsea fans. That no call did not make Iniesta score the goal, nor did it lead to it. There was a good few minutes separating the events as I recall. Chelsea lost because they played like shit for the entire first match, and didn't play that much better the second time around, and really believed they could hold Europe's top scoring team goalless. Not to mention it was 10-11, advantage Chelsea, for the last thirty minutes or so, because of, well nothing.

Oh, and the rivalry deepens.

To educate my hardcore soccer friends but they only know the top players and the most well known youngsters(bojan, Pato, macheda). I wrote a facebook note on 5 players that I think are going to be good. I know Ossia and the regulars on this thread will know them, for those of you that are lurking in this thread.

Mamadou Sakho 19, 1990- France- Paris St Germain D
At only 19 years, Sakho, a central defender, has already established himself as one of the best central defenders in Europe, Sahko is tall, powerful and possesses leadership qualities which are all too important for a good CB. Expect him to transfer to Arsenal because we all know how much of a man crush Wenger has on French youngsters

Adem Ljajic 17, 1991- Serbia- Man Utd M
Touted as the greatest player Serbia has produced, he has certainly been meeting those expectations. Despite being only 17, Ljaljic has coaches drooling at the sight of his slick passing skills and has the pace to beat most defenders. This talented winger is also blessed by being able to hone his craft at one of the best youth academies in the world and they have the manpower to not rush Ljalic into the first team. But on talent alone, Sir Alex may not be able to hold him back for too long.

Sofiane Feghouli 19, 1989- France- Grenoble M
We all know that every good young French midfielder has been touted as the next “Zidane” and 9 out of 10 times, those players go on to fizzle out but it’s hard to see this young French attacking midfielder leaving the spotlight anytime soon. His technical skill and vision have top European clubs; Manchester United, Liverpool, Juventus, Real Madrid and Inter Milan all after his signature.

John Fleck 17, 1991- Scotland- Rangers M/F
As a Celtic fan, writing this gives me a sharp pain but you can’t talk about young stars without including this Scottish forward. At 5’9 this muscular forward draws comparisons to Wayne Rooney. At 17, he has been flirting with the Rangers first team for over a year. In recent years, Scotland has been lacklustre and it seems they can’t sink any lower after the lifetime ban of their best player, Barry Ferguson, after a late night drinking session. Scottish Manager George Burley won’t be able to ignore the calls for John Fleck’s inclusion into the Scottish squad for much longer.

Alan Dzagoev 18, 1990- Russia- CSKA Moscow M
At 18, he is the youngest ever full Russian international and has been a starter for CSKA since he was 17. Dzagoev has impressed many of his peers with an eye for goal but it’s his pace and particularly his vision and dead-ball skills that have him being labelled as the “next Beckham”. He has stated that we wants to stay in Russia for a few years but if he keeps on impressing, expect some European giants to come knocking at his door.

To Ossia: Pouvez-vous donnez-moi quelque jouer pour regarder SVP?/give me some players too look out for

I did not use a translator, so pardon my french:D, I only just started 3 months ago.

GTFO of here. im glad i didnt find this thread a couple weeks ago right after the game.

if chelsea had gotten at least one penalty like they deserved, iniesta's goal wouldve been nothing but a consolation

granted chelsea did little to no attacking in the first leg but they didnt play 'like shit'. it was a defensive masterpiece against the best attacking team in europe. drogba had a great chance in that game too.

and dont talk to me about the second leg. chelsea just destroyed barca there. granted barca had most of the possession but it was all arsenal shit: passing it around in the middle, going nowhere. chelsea on the other hands were creating havoc with the amount of possession they had & shouldve been out of sight by the time iniesta HAD BARCELONA'S FIRST SHOT ON TARGET IN THE 93RD MINUTE. great goal though

like it or not, barcelona were exposed by chelsea but alot of luck, a great shot & the ref still saw them get through. i fully expect utd to also reveal those flaws and win by about 2 goals. henry being back might help but messi was shut down mostly by chelsea and utd will try and do the same. etoo just played like shit. i dont really rate him that highly

lol. PK's aren't a given. So don't act as if you were directly robbed of a goal. And either way, not getting the call isn't what made you lose, as you were still winning, and Iniesta's goal had nothing to do with the no-call. Yes, you probably would've gotten it, and consequently, probably have won. You didn't get it, however, and you still could've won.

And Chelsea DID play like shit the first leg. Barca was clearly the better team that day, and screwed themselves over by not taking advantage of that fact.

...and either keita (a midfielder) or sylvinho at LB v ronaldo. i dont even know who'll play rb. it wont be pretty anyway considering their defence is only very average when everybody's there

barca were better than chelsea in the first leg. im not saying otherwise. however, compared to how they've obliterated teams this season, chelsea defended magnificently. barca still had a couple decent chances (bojans header comes to mind) but remember drogba had the best chance of all that night. imo 9/10 times, chelsea get through to the final.

anyway no point crying over spilt milk. everybody got the glamorous final they wanted. however chelsea wouldve been a much better challenge for united. imo barca and the spanish league will be exposed again tonight like liverpool did to real a few months ago. hope im wrong though

In regards to the crying over spilled milk w/ chelsea, fans shouldn't look any further than drogba's inability to put the goal away in 1 v 1 situations against valdes. Three times was he in w/ just him and valdes and three times he was stonewalled. If he converts just one of those, chelsea's thru w/ no complaints. Iniesta was magic

I know Real Madrid has instantly improved their team with Ronaldo and Kaka, but don't think that catapults them past Barca. We already have the best front line in Europe, and if we add David Villa like we're rumored to be doing, that's not going to change, even if we lose Eto'o. If we add Javier Mascherano, our midfield will also be the best in Europe.

He's stated that he doesn't want to leave, but is open to a big time deal. We may also package him with money for Villa, Ribery, or Ibrahimovic. And you wouldn't be called a conspiracy theorist if you said Eto'o is just saying he wants to stay at Barca so a team pays out more cash.

Its soccer, players move all the time so I understand there is always a huge chance that a player leaves despite what he says.

Reportedly, Real Madrid has pulled out of David Villa talks, and it's just Barca. The only thing stopping the deal from passing right now is that Valencia wants Bojan on loan for one year as part of the deal. Bojan is a young star, so I, nor the team, want to loan him out.

Also, other than Kaka and Ronaldo, nearly all Real Madrid players are up for sale. They aren't going to sell them all, but they're willing to sell a few no matter who it is. No way this team can be legit this year if this happens.

Barca may now be going after Robinho. Something about a clause in his contract makes it very easy for him to move if Barca is willing to pay the cash. Could also deal Eto'o for him.

I don't understand why Barca wants to get rid of Eto'o after the season he had and they had as a team.

Sometimes it sucks living on the west coast but I'm gonna try to wake up at 6:30am to catch the USA-Brazil game. But more likely I'll record it and watch it when I wake up. I'll just have to steer clear of espn.com and si.com

Seems like a pretty good deal to me. Bojan doesn't really score all that many goals for Barca yet. But I suppose if they get rid of Eto'o I'd understand why they'd want Bojan on the bench. Seems pretty similar to the deal that Man United had for Berbatov that sent Frazier Campbell to Tottenham on loan for a year.

Bojan Krkic holds the key to David Villa joining Barcelona after Unai Emery recommended the deal be agreed to if the youngster joined on loan, but the Catalan club are not keen with the proposal, according to a report.

The media in Valencia believe that a deal is in the offing after talks saw the proposition of a fee of €40 million put forward plus Krkic and Martin Caceres spending a year at the Mestalla.

While that was well received by los Che's coach, who views the young Catalan striker as the perfect replacement for Villa, Barca want another player to go on loan instead.

Eidur Gudjohnsen, Aliaksandr Hleb and Pedro have all been put forward to join Caceres at Valencia because the Blaugrana want Krkic to stay with them next term.

That could be the key to the deal though, Sport state, as the inclusion of the striker as a direct substitute for Villa is seen as the perfect answer for the squad and to placate the fans.

Valencia director Fernando Gomez stated yesterday that no bids had been officially made for Villa, but it is widely recognised that the talks which Barca revealed saw options put forward.

Real Madrid believe that the price of the striker is now too high, despite having already spent €161 million on two players and they look set to miss out.

Barca doesn't want to get rid of him. Eto'o has publicly stated before that he wanted out of Barcelona. This season, when we were winning all the time, he started saying he wants to stay, but a lot still think he wants out.

Breaking News: Manchester City Agree £18 Million For Santa Cruz

Manchester City have apparently agreed an £18 million deal to sign Roque Santa Cruz from Blackburn Rovers this summer.

The striker has been rumoured to be leaving Ewood Park during the transfer window and it seems that City manager Mark Hughes is keen on working with him again.

Now, Sky Sports News sources report that City have agreed a deal with Blackburn and that a move could go through soon.

It is thought that Hughes, the man who brough Santa Cruz to England in the first place, tried to sign the Paraguayan during the winter, but failed to agree a price.

That now appears to have been sorted and the only things that remain to be done are the personal terms and a medical.

Whether or not they will be a problem remains to be seen, as the striker did suffer from a knee injury last season and might not be fully fit still.

Should Santa Cruz sign he will be the second player to join City this summer behind Gareth Barry, who came in from Aston Villa.

Like Barry, Santa Cruz would not be too high-profile a signing for Hughes and would perhaps be a sign that the manager is going to build a squad over time.

Finally Man City is starting to do some smart pick-ups. I think they've realized that one superstar can't do everything (Robinho) and are going to improve their team all around. They should be pretty decent next year. If they don't finish in the top 7 i think Mark Hughes will be fired.

If we sell Eto'o, we're going to really want him. Even if Villa replaces Bojan at center forward, Henry's position is still up in the air. He's still good, but he's not the old Henry, and Bojan would get a lot of playing time there. If Villa takes Henry's spot, then Bojan would get the start at center forward.

How good New Zealand, Egypt, or South Africa is has shit to do with how good Spain is. Spain was the number one ranked national team in the world, not just the Confed Cup. This wasn't their B-team, this was the same team which will be the basis for their World Cup bid next year. Beating them is unbelievable upset, and yes, is one of the biggest of the decade. The quality of teams who are in no way involved in this game has, as I said, shit to do with the legitimacy of this game, or quality of the teams on the field.

Honestly, saying 'well New Zealand sucks!' as a reason a game between the United States and Spain isn't a huge upset is completely idiotic.

Although we may have lost I loved seeing in the first half how frustrated Brazil was that they were losing to the USA. I love it when so called "Soccer Countries" lose to us because it frustrates them so much, just like in the Spain game. I can't believe how far we've come in this sport as a country and other countries are ashamed to lose to the US.

Like for example how Spain stormed off the field after losing to the US and you could see it on the face of the Brazilians as they left the field after the first half. Another example is how Mexico always plays dirty against the US because they are finally better than Mexico and they feel it is their game and we have no business beating them in it.

So while I am sad that we lost. I loved that we frustrated Brazil for 45 minutes and 46 seconds. Also it gave me a lot of hope for next years World Cup.

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=658044&sec=england&cc=5901

FIFA president Sepp Blatter is still trying to find a way of curbing the Premier League's spending power.

Although the indications are Manchester City will fail in their efforts to lure Samuel Eto'o away from Barcelona, Blatter remains deeply troubled at the migration of talent to England.

It could be pointed out Real Madrid are the ones who have done the big spending this summer, twice smashing the world transfer fee record, first to buy Kaka, then Cristiano Ronaldo, who will cost an amazing £80million from Manchester United.

However, Blatter views the method of owning clubs in England as inherently unsatisfactory, putting the Premier League at an advantage compared to their major European counterparts.

"There are big associations, like France, Germany and Spain where there is a by-law that the owners of the club must be at least 51% from the club,'' said Blatter. "They must be members of the club or partners from the same country. This does not exist in the Premier League and it is a problem we have to address.''

Yet Blatter is currently at a loss as to how exactly he will achieve his aims, given UK law will not be changed to implement the same ownership rules that exist in other countries.

"We have no right to interfere in economic movements,'' he admitted. "We, the whole FIFA family, is aware of this. We have spoken before about financial fair play. Financial fair play is not only a licensing system and financing control but financing fair play means also that all participants should observe a minimum of fair play.''

Blatter's comments are unlikely to have much of an effect on City's summer recruitment drive.

Yet the return of Mark Hughes from his summer holiday on Tuesday evening might be spoiled by confirmation that Eto'o intends to see out the remaining year of his contract at Barcelona.

While Barca are keen to push through the "stratospheric offer'' City have made the Cameroon star given he could leave for nothing next summer and will miss a month of next term at the African Nations Cup, it seems Eto'o will resist a £25million deal that could see him net £200,000-a-week.

The situation will be clarified tomorrow when Eto'o's agent Josep Maria Mesalles holds a press conference to outline the 28-year-old's intentions.

While a decision to remain at the Nou Camp would be a disappointment for City, at least Hughes would avoid the major headache of how to keep all his attacking players happy given Eto'o would have been joining a squad that already included Roque Santa Cruz, Robinho and Craig Bellamy and to which Carlos Tevez will be free to add his name on July 1.

Having already signed Gareth Barry, Hughes' other priority is central defence, although he might have to increase his £15million valuation on Joleon Lescott if he is to lure the Everton defender away from Goodison Park.

so i just recently bought Fifa 09. And I'm playing the game thinking I don't really know anything about any of this stuff and was wondering, what'd be the best way to actually try and get into international soccer. are there any good sites to go for it where i can do some reading up or whatnot. The only team I can say that I really know anything about is Real Madrid in Liga BBVA. And that's only because I'm a fan of Raúl after watching the world cup.

Don't be a fan of Real Madrid. They're nothing more than rich bastards. And what do you mean by reading up? On the rules, or soccer news? ESPN and SI.com each have soccer sections. Goal.com is pretty good, and keeps up with all the transfer rumors for each team. Then usually each club, at least the major ones, have an English language forum. Here's one for Barca;

I found the best way to learn the game and how the leagues work is just through talking with people who know. I've got a friend who basically taught me how everything works, from the Champions League format to basic strategy.

If you know someone, just pick their brain and ask questions.

Ya I basically taught my two best friends everything they know about soccer and now they love it and are hooked on it. We're hoping to road-trip to Utah to watch the US men's team play.

Another Gold Cup game today. Anyone else planning on watching? To be honest I was not that impressed by Adu last game.

Today's game was a really good win for the US team. Honduras beat the US a few weeks ago in a world cup qualifier, and the US team is missing most of it's big starters for this tournament.

Davies looked really good when he came in, he got the assist on the first goal and has looked goo in the past few games too.

Ya Davies has looked good but the other games he has looked a little bit selfish. I was glad to see he was more of a team player this game.

Ya it was pretty crazy. If I didn't have a midterm paper due tomorrow I would be going to the Chelsea-Inter Milan game up in Los Angeles tonight. Did you hear Ballack broke his toe and has gone back to england?

I didn't watch the game, but just checked the score. Holy shit.

The first half the US was the better team. Then in the second half around the 55th minute Dos Santos not only pretended to get pulled down in the box but swung his elbow and nailed I think it was Goodson in the face. The ref called the bull shit foul and it was all down hill from there. I guess they felt they needed to get the goal back quick and just kept pushing up to far and kept getting beat by the faster players.

The first PK was such bull shit that the ref even gave the US a makeup call. Dos Santos got taken down in the box again later which should have been a legit pk but he didn't call it.

It was so painful to watch those goals. But August 12th will be the real test when we have our real team face mexico.

mexico beat the shit out of usa

there was also a non call penalty on dos santos

dos santos and vela (came in the second half) were to much for the usa

mexico could have score more if it wasn't for the goalkeeper Perkins...had a great game

usa never really had a chance to score

Ya Perkins made a bunch of great saves. The US did have chances to score. Especially in the first half, they just didn't capitalize .

Looks like Mexico is out of its funk. Gonna be a big game Aug 12th. I'm excited to see the US first team- they really seemed to put it together in the Confederations Cup

WAY TO GO LIVERPOOL!!! What a match today beating ManU 2-0. Torres with a beautiful goal to make it 1-0.

Yellows and Reds were handed out in this one. Eventually it was a 10 on 10 match for the last 4 mins. Then Liverpool was able to seal it with the last score.

Didn't get to catch the match tonight but from what I hear was a pretty solid performance. Torres scored twice which is good to see. Also a fantastic result for Fulham beating Juve.
