Free Agency Lottery

As I write this I am in the midst of conducting the Free Agency lottery. This will determine priority in signing of free agents in the game for the first season only. After that the salary cap/free agency system we come up with will be put into place.

The lottery is being conducted based on team ratings. That means the Pats have the least chance of getting #1 priority, the Lions have the best chance. Soon I'll be posting up the 32 team order.

This will be like a waiver system. Once a team claims a free agent that multiple teams are interested in, they will fall to the bottom of the order. However a free agent that no other team desires can be added without losing the spot in order.

FYI: I think free agents picked up for this first season should have no-trade clauses. That way someone doesn't just grab the highest rated guy to turn them around and trade them.

Well the random number generator and the pattern I set up the teams got great results. Most of the lower rated teams benefit from the higher placement where the stronger teams ended up on the lower end. The Cards are probably the biggest winners out of this with the Jags having slipped the lowest of the weaker teams.

What do you guys think about putting a limit on free agent pickups? I don't want teams dropping 10 guys because there are 10 in free agency that improve their depth. Obviously there would be some downside to doing that (most in FA are due to age or other concerns). But I'd like everyone to have a shot at grabbing a FA early or in case of injury and such.

So maybe something like max of one free agent pickup in the preseason with a max of four over the course of the regular season? Maybe the exception could be if an unbalanced trade is made and you need to fill a roster spot or a season ending injury.

not a bad idea actuallyi usually dont sign FA mid season anyway, unless im picking up a veteran backup in case of injury or weakness towards the end of the season

I think you should only be able to do position changes if the player has started at that position in real life. Injuries would be an exception though.

Personally I believe people should be able to configure their team however they like, unless there is an exploit being taken advantage of. If you want to move a CB to FS/SS they'll be taking a ratings hit in doing so in all likelihood.

I was thinking the other way around. Maybe 2 or 3 guys in preseason and once the season starts, only signing a FA due to injury or trade.

Yeah I guess it should be within reason. He wouldn't be playing WR anymore (no to two way players). Probably wouldn't allow it regardless.

when i made the statement its in reference to moves that make sense Randy Moss playing safety makes no sense. but example Shawn Springs is a CB but can also play safety too. some DE's can play linebacker etc. no way that an offensive player should play defense

Yeah to me those are coaching decisions. I don't believe in being restrictive when it comes to coaching decisions. Only time I would put limitations is if it was exploiting some flaw with the game.

Yeah, I think so because the first roster update is going to be different than what is there now. We'll probably have something like a two day free agency period before we officially start since there is no preseason in online franchises.

I don't think there will be a feeling of rushing because didn't Pasta say that the games won't officially start until the 19th? That's plenty of time to handle free agency.
