JFL POWER is a weekly e-zine covering the JFL and its owners. Currently JFL POWER features an almost-livechat hosted by columnist Guy Rolph and focuses on the latest Power Rankings. JFL POWER is seeking any JFL-relevant content for one-time or weekly features.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Guy Rolph says:
Welcome everyone to the inaugural issue of JFL Power, your weekly breakdown of the JFL Power Rankings with Power-Ranker Extraordinaire, Head Coach of the 3-0 Pittsburgh Steelers, Coach Michael1807.
Lookin' good so far, Coach. How's it been?

Coach Michael1807 says:
It's been pretty good, just preparing for this week’s match-up with the Chargers.

Guy Rolph says:
As well you should be; San Diego has not lost a game yet either.
So I'm here as your humble host, Guy Rolph, and it's a pleasure to be able to sit here all season with you Coach. And I must say you're mighty brave to step up and put out a power ranking each week.

Coach Michael1807 says:
Yeah, I did think about it for a little while before I decided to put myself up to the challenge of producing the weekly power rankings; but I think it will be great in the long run.

Guy Rolph says:
And we'll see in the long run if there's any price to it. Already you seem to have raised the ire of a few veterans, but we'll get to that a little later. What I wanna know is what right you think you have to rank teams. Have you any experience with power rankings?

Coach Michael1807 says:
Yes I do have some experience with power rankings. As a kid I would help my father with looking up and keeping stats - he did the power rankings for a national newspaper - and since then I have always had an interest in rankings and stat-keeping for every coaching position I’ve had.

Guy Rolph says:
So you're like the Tiger Woods of power rankings?

Coach Michael1807 says:
I'd say more like the Michael Jordan, but that’s just me.

Guy Rolph says:
Whatever. Just men puttin' balls in holes to me. But either way, it sounds like you should have a strong sense of what constitutes a power ranking. What does it mean for a team to be powerful? What should a power ranking tell me when I look at it?

Coach Michael1807 says:
Well, for me, for a team to be considered a powerful team there are 4 qualifications. First, record; second, strength of schedule; third, margin of victory; and fourth is streak. And what I mean by streak is a player’s hot streak, a winning streak, or a streak of turnovers. All of these factor in to how high a team is ranked.
When you look at my power rankings it should tell you what teams have these things going in their favor and on the other end what teams don’t. When you read through the rankings you will know which teams you do or do not want to play that week.

Guy Rolph says:
Now right now a lot of teams have the same record, and a few of them look pretty impressive. Do your rankings at this point really differentiate that much at the top? What makes the Carolina Panthers the best of those 3-0 teams? Why not, say, the Vikings?

Coach Michael1807 says:
They do show a difference between the teams. Now at this point in the season that difference is small but it is there none the less. The Panthers 3 wins have all come against JFL-coached teams and the Vikings have 1 win against a JFL-coached opponent (the 21st ranked 49ers).

Guy Rolph says:
So that group at the top is distinguished by what it's proved against real competition. There's another pack of teams further down the list, surprisingly grouped at 1-2. What's goin' on down there?

Coach Michael1807 says:
Well that’s a group of teams that have had a tough go of it even against non-JFL-coached teams. At least one loss has come to a non-coached team.

Guy Rolph: says
Do you think any of these teams are poised to bounce back?

Coach Michael1807 says:
I do believe so. I think that at least 2 or 3 of them have the skills and coaching needed to get back on track and make a move up in the power rankings.

Guy Rolph says:
Which 2 or 3 are you thinking of?

Coach Michael1807 says:
Well on the spot, I would say the Texans and Raiders have a great shot and so do the Bears.

Guy Rolph says:
The Raiders certainly seem to have the personnel to go on a run - we'll see on the coaching. And JFL veteran Scrunch3655 is always dangerous, so we'll see how he manages these early losses down in Houston.
How much movement should we actually expect over the season? Do you think the Week 17 Power Rankings will look drastically different?

Coach Michael1807 says:
I do in some ways, I think that the lower teams will get things together and rise up. But I think the top 7 or 8 teams will pretty much look the same. Time will tell.

Guy Rolph says:
Do any teams in that top 8 look susceptible to a big drop-off?

Coach Michael1807 says:
I could see any of the top 5 teams slipping if they suffered a major injury. All of the teams have very good starting quarterbacks but unproven backups. If any of them were to get injured it would hurt that team severely.

Guy Rolph says:
That might be a particular concern for a team like Minnesota. The aging Brett Favre has gotta miss a game eventually, right?

Coach Michael1807 says:
You would think, but it seems odds haven’t affected him so far in his amazing career.
Every QB seems to get hurt at least once, but odds haven’t caught up with Mr. Favre. Yet.

Guy Rolph says:
Odds or decisions.
Now there's already been some public discussion of these initial rankings, and an issue came up involving the Washington Redskins. Despite being led by legendary JFL coach El Magnifico and his multiple championships, you have his Skins rated lowest among the unbeaten teams. Everyone wants to know: what gives?
Do you stand firm behind your placement, or is this simply a matter of being new to the JFL?

Coach Michael1807 says:
I will always stand firm on my placements.
In my research the Redskins have only beaten 3 non JFL coached teams, while all the teams above him have at least 1 win against JFL coached teams. Plus the Skins have not had a very tough schedule up to this point, save for the opening weekend win against the G-Men; but they have a good game week 4 that may move them up if they can win.

Guy Rolph says:
So your rankings reflect what's been proven over the season-to-date, not necessarily on who you think the best-coached teams are or the eventual division winners will be?

Coach Michael1807 says:
Correct. My rankings will represent up to the latest week played. No previous season included or future predictions. This is the JFL – it’s a “What have you done for me lately?” league.

Guy Rolph says:
And we wouldn't have it any other way.
Well that about wraps it up, Coach. Any final thoughts on the Week 3 Power Rankings?

Coach Michael1807 says:
Well, I hope everyone enjoyed the first taste. We have 14 more weeks to go and then into the playoffs. Hopefully we can keep this up.

Guy Rolph says:
Thank you, Coach. You keep the rankings coming, I'll keep up with the questions. Good luck next week against the Chargers.

Coach Michael1807 says:
I’ll take it.

Guy Rolph says:
That's it, the first one's out of the way. For Coach Mike, I'm Guy Rolph. Thanks for reading JFL Power.

Excellent feature, guys! Given the chatter that the initial power rankings set off that was a great choice of topics to get things started. Can't wait to see what you come up with this season.

Very nice write up. Man I'm happy you chose to take on the Power Rankings. I don't think I would of had the time to put that much thought into it. Very nice!

Props SecondSundodger - nice add on feature to the league - I used to do something similar with our previous seasons called the "The Hot Seat" and The PEMP Magazine - but I like the new flavor! Keep it coming!

Bends - you know me - I'll think of something else to add as always - just hasn't come to me yet - but it will.....
