USC Trojans 34 @ Virginia Cavaliers 17
It was a beautiful day here in Charlottesville, Virginia. That was until the #4 USC Trojans came onto the field. From the opening kickoff to the very last whistle the Trojans were in control of this game.
The Trojans were led by their Junior QB Mark Sanchez, who finished 19-23 for 268 yards 3 TDs 0 INT and a passer rating of 223.5. Sanchez found six different receivers during the game. With FB Stanley Havili being his primary target catching 6 passes for 83 yards and 1 TD. Patrick Turner also had 4 catches for 98 yards 1 TD and the longest gain of the game when he pulled in a highlight reel catch for 59 yards. The running had a slow start and never really got going. Stafon Johnson led the club with 14 rushes for 68 yards. FB Havili scored the only rushing TD.
The defense was led by Junior CB Shareece Wright who had 9 tackles with 1 going for a loss. Rey Maualuga pitched in with 6 tackles with 1 going for a loss. Rey also had 1 of the 2 sacks turned in by this dominate SC defense. The defense held the Cavalier offense to 8 rushing yards on 17 rushes.
Two keys to the game were the ZERO turnovers by the USC offense. And the defense stepping up to hold the Cavaliers to only 4-9 on 3rd down.
There were a couple of areas the Trojans need to improve in. Mainly the offensive line play. Which failed to ever really open any holes for Johnson and co. The line also allowed Sanchez to be sacked 3 times.Another is time of posession which the Cavaliers won 12:14 to 11:50.

Bye week
Week 2 of the 2008 season was spent reaching out to our recruiting class. While not mentioning any names the Trojans are very close to signing a top QB, WR, C, DE, OLB, MLB and FS.
The Trojans will have 8 of the top prospects visiting the campus this coming week. The recruits will be on hand inside the Coliseum when the #3 Ohio State Buckeyes comes to town.

#4 USC Trojans 31 VS #3 Ohio State Buckeyes 24
In a game that was being billed as an early season BCS title game. The Ohio State Buckeyes came into the Los Angeles Coliseum with every intention of knocking the USC Trojans out of National Title contention.
From the opening kickoff the stadium was electric.
The Buckeyes won the coin toss and decided to receive. They were looking to put the Trojans in a hole from the beginning. Senior QB Todd Boeckman looked sharp in the opening drive. RB Chris Wells also looked crisp breaking off an 8 yards run on his first play. It looked like it was going to be a long day for the vaunted Trojan D. With Ohio St. driving down the field with 6-8 yard passes. That is until #7 Cary Harris stepped in front of a slant pattern.
On the ensuing drive the Trojan offense looked like it might have found its solution to the running game with Stafon and McKnight finding plenty of holes. On a 4th and 1 McKnight broke a 14 yard gain. On the very next play JR QB Mark Sanchez dropped back for a pass and got hit HARD by DL Dexter Larrimore, LB Marcus Freeman picked up the loose ball and returned it 72 yards for the first score of the game.
After USC drove the length of the field and scored on a 1 yard run by Stafon Johnson. Ohio St. once again found the middle of the field WIDE open for the taking. And once again, inside the red zone S Taylor Mays stepped in front of a slant pattern for the second INT of the game.
With a minute left in the first half, with USC leading 14-10. Stafon Johnson found the biggest hole of the day. When he broke out a 29 yard scamper breaking 3 tackles and carrying another defender into the endzone with him.
USC got the ball to start the second half. And everything looked good until Sanchez threw towards WR Vidal Hazelton, who had triple coverage. The interception was caught on the 4 yard line. It was the first interception thrown by Sanchez this season. Exactly two plays later LB Rey Maualuga picked off Boeckman. Which led to another TD by Johnson. After Ohio St. scored the Trojans were driving the field when Sanchez threw his second INT of the quarter. Perennial All-American and Butkus finalist LB James Laurinaitis returned the INT 62 yards for the TD. Sanchez ended the day with 3 INT, with the last one coming inside the endzone.
With 3:00 left in the game and the Buckeyes driving yet again. Boeckman who had not felt much pressure all game, dropped back for a QB choice. When he decided to run with it he was met at the line by reserve DE Kyle Moore. Moore laid a perfect hit on Boeckman knocking the ball lose. CB Terrell Thomas picked it up and returned it 63 yards to just inside the 10. USC kicked the final score of the game with 1:59 left in the game.
QB Mark Sanchez finished the day 13-20 192 yards, 1 TD 3 INT, 132.1 rating 65% completion. Stafon Johnson led all RBs with 78 yards on 23 carries and 3 TDs. McKnight contributed 53 yards on 9 carries.
Rey Maualuga led all defenders with 13 tackles 1 for a loss and 1 INT returned for 5 yards. SS Taylor Mays had 10 tackles and an INT. Keith Ellison and Shareece Wright each had 7 tackles.
The Trojans defense held pre-season Heisman candidate Chris Wells to 31 yards on 12 carries and zero TDs

Bye Week
After a tough game against Ohio State, the USC coaches used this bye week to get in touch with some of its recruits.
There was some bad news that came out of the Week 3 tilt against the Buckeyes. Five star CB recruit Parker Beato, who already already committed to coming out to Los Angeles for the Ohio St. game. Failed to show up for his flight. He instead went to the Notre Dame game. Shortly following the game he signed a letter of intent with the Fighting Irish without so much as a phone call to coach Carroll. This will add even more intrigue to the November 29th game in the Coliseum.
The Trojans will have at least 5 recruits visiting for the October 4th game versus the Oregon Ducks

#4 USC Trojans 48 @ Oregon State 17
This was the first conference game for both teams. Oregon State looked to shock the #4 Trojans who were coming off a major vitory over Ohio State.
The game started off as a major defensive struggle. The only score of the first quarter came with 2:32 left in the game when Mark Sanchez found Sophomore Ronald Johnson in the back of the end zone.
The second quarter was a completely different story. Sanchez threw two touchdowns to Vidal Hazelton (7 yds and 4 yds). Stafon Johnson also found the end zone.
At the start of the 3rd quarter coach Moose decided to let some of the second string players get some snaps on offense. Joe McKnight repaid him when he broke off a season long 61 yard TD. And in the final drive of the game for Sanchez he threw a TD to Patrick Turner. The fourth quarter saw mass subs for the Trojan offense. Both QB Mitch Mustain and RB CJ Gable showed that they are more then capable of handling the load when called upon. Mustain ended the day 3 of 8 and Gable had 3 rushes for 11 yards and 1 TD.
The Trojan defense continued their season long domination. Rey Maualuga, Keith Ellison, Brian Cushing and TJ Bryant had seven tackles a piece. Maualuga also had one of the two interceptions thrown by OSU QB Sean Canfield. DT Fili Moala had the other when he wisely put his hands up.
There are rumblings in the locker room and the press that maybe it has become time for Joe McKnight to supplant Stafon Johnson as the starting RB. McKnight finished the day with 7 rushes for 108 yards and 1 TD. Johnson was 14 rushes for 69 yards and 1 TD. Coach Moose insisted that Johnson was his starting RB and that McKnight was more valuable on the return teams... for the time being.

#3 USC Trojans 52 vs Oregon Ducks 10
The Trojans came into the game looking to avenge last years loss. The Ducks wanted to prevent USC from sweeping both of the Oregon teams.
For the second week in a row the game got off to a slow start. The first score of the game came from FB Stanley Havili when he scored with 3:14 left in the first quarter.
The second quarter started off with a bang for the Trojans. RB Stafon Johnson started off the scoring with a 4 yard TD reception from Mark Sanchez. On the ensuing drive the Trojans defense forced the Duck offense into a 3 and out. Joe Mcknight fielded the punt on his own 15 yard line. After making one person miss he flew past the rest of the coverage team as scored on the 85 yard punt return. His first return for a TD of the season.
Oregon scored their only points of the game late in the second quarter.
Mark Sanchez threw one more TD in the 3rd quarter when he found Pat Turner from the 4 yard line. On the next Trojan drive late in the third quarter. Sanchez threw his third interception of the game. He was removed from the game at the start of the 4th.
Sophomore QB Mitch Mustain once again proved he could start for 95% of the nation when he came in. Mustain ended the game 8 of 10 passing for 77 yards 2 touchdowns and 0 int. His QB rating was 210.6.
After talk last week about McKnigh passing him on the depth chart Stafon Johnson came out and showed why he should stay #1. Johnson ended the day with 15 rush attempts for 107 yards rushing and 2 receptions for 4 yards and his only TD of the game.
The defense was once again nearly unstoppable. Holding the Ducks to 10 points and -22 yards rushing. The Ducks ended the game with 145 total yards of offense. The Trojans D also held the Ducks to only 6 first downs. DE Averell Spicer recorded two sacks while Fili Moala and TJ Bryant both pitched in a sack as well. SS Taylor Mays forced one fumble which LB Rey Maualuga recovered.

#4 USC Trojans 63 vs Arizona State Sun Devils 3
Rudy Carpenter and the Sun Devils look to upset the Trojans just to stay in the top 25.
This game had the looks of a good one coming into it. With both teams ranked and with ASU having a legitimate threat at QB that might be able to pick apart the Torjans defense.
It quickly became obvious that the Sun Devils were supremely outmatched. QB Mark Sanchez and WR Patrick Turner started off the scoring fest when they hooked up from 7 yards out. Sanchez also rushed for his first TD this season.
On two consecutive punt returns Joe McKnight returned them for TDs. The first one went for 74 yards and the other for 89 yards (A new school record)
Sanchez threw two more TDs, one of which Stafon Johnson took for 72 yards, before he took an early shower.
LB Brian Cushing even got into the scoring frenzy, when he took an interception 98 yards (new school record).
Everson Griffen 2, Fili Moala 1 and Kyle Moore 1 all recorded sacks. While Cushing 1, Kevin Thomas 1, Kevin Ellison 1 and Cary Harris 1 all picked off the QB. Everson Griffen also forced one fumble which Averelle Spicer picked up.
This was yet another dominating performance from the Trojans.
Coach Moose announced a formal apology to the Oregon Ducks for not pulling up on the reins sooner.
Some good news was announced before the game... Highly touted 5-star Athlete Pierre Suber and 3-star SS Lee Coker have announced their official signing with USC
