Clemson's Red Zone Defense Stifles 'Bama
Spiller hurt in the 34-21 victory

James Davis carried the load after CJ Spiller went down in the first quarter

A casual fan might notice this win on SportsCenter's bottom line and feel that it was a solid victory. This is by no means a bad win in any way, shape or form. A win over a top 25 team to start the season by nearly 2 touchdowns is a great start to the season, until you look at the injury report and notice a huge loss for Clemson. CJ Spiller went down in the first quarter with torn pectoral muscle. He already had amassed 54 yards on 7 carries. This injury halves Clemson's dynamic rushing duo for nine weeks. James Davis came in after sharing carries in the first quarter and continued Spiller's dirty work, carrying the ball 16 times for a total of 85 yards.

Clemson quarterback Cullen Harper put on a throwing clinic in the midst of this rushing attack, going 16/19 for 222 yards. His only bad throw of the afternoon came when he tried to force the ball up the sideline, resulting in an interception. The real star, or stars, of the game would be the Clemson defense. Four different players came away with interceptions, two of which were inside the 10 yard line, and another interception that was brought back 62 yards for the touchdown by junior Chris Chancellor.

"Our defense was certainly following the 'bend but don't break' mindset all game," said coach Tommy Bowden during the post game press conference. "We were giving up solid chunks on the ground, but we really turned the juice on in the red zone. Those easy running yards were gone, and it seemed like Bama needed to pass. Wilson seemed to force his throws in the red zone, and our players were all over the routes. Don't get me wrong though, this doesn't excuse their performance outside of the twenty yard-line. They will be doing a lot of running in practice this week."

Clemson wide reciever Aaron Kelly was all over the field as well, catching 6 balls for 116 yards and one touchdown. Clemson is scheduled to play The Citadel (FCS Southeast) next week at home, which should be an easy victory for the Tigers.

Clemson's First Trip Away From Home a Success!
They Continue Their March Towards an Undefeated Season

Jacoby Ford had 2 long touchdown receptions

The first time Clemson left their home and Howard's Rock was to face ACC foe Wake Forest. Might I mention this is not the Wake Forest some of you are used to, but #10 ranked Wake Forest. A difficult task for the Tigers, but not unmanageable. All the nerves and cold feet were shaken off when the opening kickoff was returned by Byron Maxwell for a touchdown.

Wake Forest's offense was a task that proved very hard for the Clemson defense to slow down, but you have to take into consideration the sheer amount of time their offense spent on the field. The Tiger offense averaged 6 plays per possession on offense, proving to be a quick strike offense against a slow Deacon defense. The Clemson defense also had 3 interceptions, 2 of which were returned for touchdowns.

Noteworthy Performances:
HB James Davis continued his run for the Heisman Memorial trophy, touching the ball 18 times and racking up 191 total yards with two touchdowns.

QB Cullen Harper went 11 for 13 for 252 yards and 4 touchdowns, giving him an astounding QB Rating of 348.9

FS Chris Clemons had 8 big tackles and his partner in the secondary, SS Michael Hamlin, had 7 tackles and an interception (which was returned for a touchdown).

Good game man, your offense is frustrating to stop, but I got the necessary stops.

yeah, my defense has no speed so its hard to stop your running back and your WR's. Our next few games should be interesting to play, maybe I'll get some speed on defense.
