General Settings: No money plays, no re-starts. This is a "straight" dynasty, so i wont be pulling any fast ones, or trying to find a way around recruiting or gameplay to my advantage. I play a straight style, running and passing, utilizing subs and packages and trying to "re-create" the Indiana team for this first year. After year 1, i may alter philosophies to match personnel, as you would in the real games and seasons. I'll make any notes as to great game scores and dynasty records (i cleared all those out before i started, so i have a clean slate.) This will be my first time ver playing online, so im looking forward to it (and im sure ill get killed)

The 2008 Indiana Hoosiers return a total of 13 starters from their bowl bound 2007 squad. Indiana has plenty of talent on the offensive side of the ball, but has huge question marks on the defensive side. There is a mix of upperclassmen and underclassmen and everyone will be expect to contribute to keep the Hoosiers playing in bowl season. Here is a position by position analysis of the 2008 team.
Offense
2007 Stats
Scoring: 31.7 ppg (38th in nation)
Rushing 157.4 ypg (52nd in nation)
Passing: 236.4 ypg (51st in nation)
Total Offense: 393.8 ypg (61st in nation)
Quarterback: One of the strengths of the team, assuming Kellen Lewis can stay on the field. He is their returning leader both in rushing and passing. A true mobile QB who has an arm, he can cause problems for any and all defenses. His TD-INT ratio last year was almost 3-1 and he looks to improve on that this year. His legs provide the second dimension of his attack that frustrate defenses. He ran for 700 yards last year and will continue to utilize his arm and legs to beat the opponents. There isnt much experience behind him, so he must stay healthy. Grade: B+
Running Back: Potential gamebreaker Marcus Thigpen resides in the backfield and looks to put it all together in his senior year. They have plenty of game experience, but few game changers in the backfield. Bryan Payton and Demetrius McCray will figure into the mix, but the true horse here is Thigpen. In the big 10, a strong running game is key, and IU will rely heavily on this group to carry them. Grade: B-
Wide Receiver: Losing James Hardy to the NFL will provide an opportunity for someone to step up at this position. Andrew Means and Ray Fisher both have experience, as does Brandon Walker-Roby, but none have the playmaking ability needed to be a force to reckon with. With 6 TD's all of last year between them, they will have to improve to let IU have a chance. Their blocking is adequate but if Indiana wants to have any success, someone must emerge as a go-to threat.Grade: C-
Tight Ends: Not utilized in the spread offense much, the tight ends mainly see the field to block. However, going into the 2008 season, they have been told to get those hands ready to make an impact. Each tight end on the roster has the speed of an elephant, but still will be used at times in the passing offense. Grade: Inc
Offensive Line: A young group that must mature quickly. They have the brute strength to knock opponents off the ball, and must do so to let Lewis and QB have time and room to operate. Once dubbed "The Seven Blocks of Limestone" this group will have to be rock steady for a successful season in Bloomington. There isnt a senior on the starting line which could pose a problem when going into hostile environments.Grade: C
Player Who Must Deliver: Marcus Thigpen - This running back needs to have a sensational senior season for the Hoosiers to go anywhere. Kellen Lewis can't do it all, and will need his top Running Back to perform this year. He looks to break the 1000 yard barrier, and rack up 10+ touchdowns.
Player Who Must Improve: Andrew Means - Number one wideout with Hardy gone, Means must become a reliable target this year. If he can't become a consistent, reliable target, the passing game will be in trouble.
Role Player Who Must Produce: Brandon Walker-Roby - will be lined up all over the place, including special teams and must have a solid season, where ever he plays. He will be used mainly as a 3rd WR and in the spread offense, should see alot of balls come his way in underneath routes.
Freshman Expected To Contribute: Anyone on the Offensive Line. Several Freshman will see time this year, someone will have to show they belong on the college level.
Stat of the Pre-season: 16 - Number of TD's NFL bound WR James Hardy caught last year.
Defense
2007 Stats
Scoring: 28.5 ppg (69th in nation)
Rushing 159.7 ypg (63rd in nation)
Passing: 243.7 ypg (81st in nation)
Total Offense: 403.4 ypg (71st in nation)
Turnover Margin: +2 (41st in nation)
Defensive End: Sackmaster Greg Middleton comes back hoping to duplicate a year in which he led the entire NCAA in sacks with 16. Another strong year is a must for the defense to improve on their rankinsg from last year. He has some help on the other end as Kirlew had 4.5 sacks last year. Both play the run well and have the bulk to hold up over an entire game. Grade: B
Defensive Tackle: Two big guys occupy the middle. More run stuffers than QB rushers, the tackle position looks to anchor the middle of the line and improve on a suspect run defense from last year. While they dont expect to register alot of sacks, the must hold up against the run. Grade: C+
Linebacker: Two big playmakers come back at linebacker, including Geno Johnson. The LB crew may not have the name recognition of other groups, but they perform above average in most occassions. Speedy linebackers who seek out the ball. Need to be a little better against the pass and control the middle of the field. Look for them to be used alot in blitzing formations Grade: B-
Cornerbacks: This group is under the most fire this year after losing two starters to the NFL. This will be a rotating group, but two people must step up and show they can handle the passing games of opposing teams. Depth is an issue also. This group could make or break the season. If they dont step up, this will be a long year. Grade: C-
Safeties: Both starting safeties return, which may be the best sign for the IU defense. The passing defense has been a question mark for the last few years and both safeties, Thomas and Polk, have to perform and be leaders of the defense. Thomas was the leading tackler last year, which is never a good sign. Grade: B
Special Teams: This might be the biggest strength for IU. Austin Starr returns for his last year as kicker and was a finalist for the Groza award last year. The punting game is so-so, but the return game could be a spark for the offense. Speedster Marcus Thigpen will be returning punts and looks to help out his starting field position. Grade: B+
Player Who Must Deliver: Greg Middleton - He must pressure the opposing quarterbacks often to keep the pass defense from being exposed. While not expected to duplicate hsi 16 sack season from last year, double digits may be needed.
Player Who Must Improve: Geno Johnson - touted as a potential All-American, its time for him to shine and anchor the defense at linebacker. Must become an all around player and defend the pass and run.
Role Player Who Must Produce: Any Cornerback - After last year's abysmal pass defense, the corners must show that they can play at the NCAA level. With two new starters, this could be the biggest question mark of the season.
Freshmen Expected To Contribute: Donnell Jones - Taking over for one of the two corners who left for the NFL wont be easy, but he must step up. He has talked openly about welcoming the challenge, let's see if he is up to it.
Stat of the Pre-season: 7 - Number of starters returning from last year.

The Hoosiers look to have 2008 pick up where 2007 left off, by getting back to the post-season. For the first time in 12 seasons, Indiana played in a bowl game last year, and look to build off that success. They are led by Head Coach Bill Lynch, who takes over for the late Terry Hoeppner who passed away last year. He looks to maintain that emotional edge IU has shown, with the whole school rallying around the team as they fought to secure "Hep's" legacy.
Indiana has 8 home games and dont play powerhouses Michigan or Ohio State this year, which should help their chances of returning to the post season. The offense looks to be steady, if not spectacular as long as Kellen Lewis can stay standing. He returns as a true dual threat QB and appears poised to lead the Hoosiers back to the bowl season. The playmakers from last year are gone, and look to leave a void for the entire offense. Plenty of talent remains, but with no real experience to show, someone must become the second option, as Lewis cant do it all himself.
The defense looks to bounce back from years of sluggish play. The passing defense ranks towards the bottom of the NCAA and it must improve for the Hoosiers to stay in games. They simply can not compete in shoot outs as they did last year. Look for the Defensive line to rotate alot of players and look to wreak havoc in the backfield. The Linebackers are steady and should provide adequate support, but the real issue lies in the defensive backfield. At times last year, you could see 2 to 3 guys running free in the secondary, and that was with two future NFL players on the roster. This year must prove to be different.
An 8 win season doesnt appear too much to ask and looks to be the goal set by this IU squad.

2008
Going into the 2008 year, Indiana had needs at very few positions; FB and K. With plenty of underclassmen to fill depth, it gave IU a chance to look at potential playmakers and fill any gaps on their squad. With James Hardy leaving after the 2007 season, Kellen Lewis being a question mark and a suspect D, the IU coaches decided on looking for replacements at those positions.
Be sure to check back to see what, if any progress is made on the recruiting trail.

Western Kentucky at Indiana
The Hoosiers kick off their season against the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucy, in what will be their first game as a member of the FBS (D 1-A). This game looks to be a tune-up for IU, as they will try to evaluate their talent in a live game setting. The coaches have warned though that no opponent is to be taken for granted.
What Western Kentucky has to do to win: Play a perfect game. They look to be overmatched here and are just hoping to keep it respectable. Look for them to try to exploit IU's young and inexperienced corners.
What Indiana has to do to win: In all reality, show up. As long as they have 11 players on offense and 11 on defense, this shouldnt be a tough match up. Look for them to spread the ball around and try to find some playmakers in this glorified practice.
Key Matchup: Kellen Lewis, Mr Everything for IU against the DL of Western Kentucky. They must contain Lewis for their team to have a chance.
Prediction: IU should walk away with a big victory 41-10
Be sure to check back and see if the Hoosiers handled their business.

Indiana Wins Home Opener In Style
Indiana cruised to an opening day victory by handling Western Kentucky 66-20. This game was a reflection of what Hoosier fans hope to see the entire year. Behind a huge day from Kellen Lewis and Marcus Thigpen, Indiana was able to wrap this game up by half time. While the offense looked to be running like a well oiled machine, the defense gave up touchdowns on their first two possessions and looked like every Hoosier fans worst nightmare. They were able to rebound and only allow one TD in the last 3.5 quarters, but you could tell that nerves were frayed whenever the defense was on the field.
Lewis threw 3 TD's, including a 74 yarder to Brandon Walker-Roby and ran for another score, while Thigpen racked up 2 TD's. The defense did come away with 4 INT's and shut down the running game. The backups were inserted for the entire 4th quarter to give them some experience, which should help the Hoosiers down the line.
Player of the Game: Kellen Lewis - played like the leader of the team. 4 Total TD's, no interceptions, a few nice 3rd down runs, he played like a seasoned vet and looked to be completely poised.
Play of the Game: Bailey hauls in a long TD pass to show he might be the next big playmaker at WR for the Hoosiers.
http://www.easportsworld.com/en_US/video/54513
It Was Over When....: In all reality it should have been over before it started, but the IU defense let Western Kentucky hang around. It was over at half time, as IU notched a TD to go up by 4 score going into the break.
While there are plenty of things to work on, Indiana sits at 1-0 and looks to strengthen their team in all regards.

Hoosiers hand FCS Southeast a Loss
http://www.easportsworld.com/en_US/video/54626
In what can only be described as a beating, Indiana took it to FCS Southeast and won 72-10 on a cold dreary day in Bloomington. This was another glorified practice as the Indiana offense and defense looked dominant at all times. Kellen Lewis had another great day, 2 TD's, 0 INT and a rushing TD, but the day belonged to Marcus Thigpen with 6 Total TD's. As hoped, Thigpen contributed on all sides of the ball.
The defense held up better, but alot of the mistakes were caused by FCS, with dropped passes, fumbled exchanges and bad throws. The only touchdown given up was a garbage touchdown with the FCS halfback streaking down the sideline after breaking a tackle from backup QB Ben Chappell (no idea why he was in at safety). The offense looked solid, but unspectacular as they moved the ball efficiently. Lewis was 11-12 for 190 yards and 2 TD 0 INT.
Player of the Game: Marcus Thigpen - 6 Total TD's will turn some heads. He ran for 3 TD's, caught 2 TD passes from Lewis and ran a punt back for a score, and had another punt return end at the 2 yard line. The coaches have got to be happy with his peformance.
Play of the Game: A nifty 33 yard run by Thigpen who outraced everyone to the endzone.
http://www.easportsworld.com/en_US/video/54509
It Was Over When.....: The coin toss began at midfield. The score ended up ugly, but it could have been worse. It was 56-3 at halftime and the 2nd string played the entire second half to try to keep the score respectable.
As an added bonus, Indiana was able to secure commitments from two recruits. More on this development later.
Editors Note: Again, the starters came out a halftime. I could do no wrong in this game.

Hoosiers take care of business against Ball State
In a game that had little hype, the Hoosiers came out and dominated the game. The score tells the story, 59-13. Ball State couldnt get anything going, managing only a field goal against the IU starters. Kellen Lewis had a great day going 15-17 for 196 yards and 6 TD with no picks. The ball was spread around to several different receivers, but Ray Fisher brought home 3 TD catches, along with a kickoff return for a touchdown. The IU first team offense and defense only played 3 quarters, as the second stringers finished up the game. This marks the 3rd game in a row the starters have not been on the field the whole game.
Indiana dominated every facet of the game, even their second string was able to dominate Ball State, minus a missed tackle that allowed them to score on a long TD run. The defense, which was a focal point coming in and looked to be the cause of trouble, has been fairly spectacular in the first 3 games. Granted, its been against FCS, Western Kentucky and Ball State. The offense appears to be moving well in the air, although the ground game is a bit of a concern. The defense has been pretty good against the run and mediocre against the pass. The key ingredient on defense has been creating turnovers. If the Hoosiers can continue their ball hawking ways, it may be a magical season.
The Hoosiers look to continue their hot streak next week and hope it continues on the recruiting trail, where they are zeroing in on their top recruits. With a WR and MLB already in tow,the depth looks to be in good shape, now IU must find some playmakers. No visits scheduled for next week, but in weeks 7-9 they have their top prospects coming in.
Player of the game: Kellen Lewis - If you throw for 6 TD's and 0 picks, you have to be player of the game, its an unwritten rule.
Play of the Game: Lewis to Bailey, finally completing a long TD pass
It was over When: Lewis hooked up on the first TD pass to Bailey.

Indiana Handles Big 10 Foe Michigan State
Indiana cruised to another victory, this their first conference game and win of the year. They defeated the Spartans of Michigan State 40-14 behind a strong game by their defense and Marcus Thigpen. The game was seemingly won early when IU raced out to a 14-0 lead and throttling Michigan State's offense. With a chance to go up 3 scores, Kellen Lewis through an interception on the goal line on 3rd down which thwarted a good scoring drive.
Michigan State had a decent running game but just couldnt get the passing game in gear. Indiana's Defensive Line played good, shutting down the pass and allowing the LB's to roam free and pick up the middle routes which MSU loves to utilize.
IU statistically was led by Thigpen who had 12 carries for 124 yards and 2 TD. Lewis had his shakiest game thus far, throwing a pick and fumbling on a 43 yard scramble. The starters again did not play the 4th quarter, as the coach brought in the second string for valuable playing time.
Player of the Game: Marcus Thigpen - boasting a robust 10 yards a carry will do that. He carried the offense today in a great display of running.
Play of the Game: Thigpen's first TD run (see highlight below). With a single move and broken tackle, he was off for the first score.
It Was Over When: Geno Johnson picked off a Hoyer pass to stop a good offensive drive right before half, and IU drove down the field and added a FG.
On the recruiting trail, IU has locked up a MLB (3 stars) who looks to provide depth and a WR (2 star) who will most likely see special teams duty his first few years. Nothing too exciting about this recruiting class so far, but there are alot of visits and offers coming up. IU is #1 or 2 on several players list, including a game breaking QB and a few defensive gems.

Thigpen opens the scoring with a nice 30+ yard scamper

Hoosiers Win Big, Lose Bigger
The Hoosiers beat Big Ten opponent Iowa 34-3 behind a balanced attack and a strong defensive effort. Lewis had a pretty good day, but the big story was the Hoosiers losing not one but two of their impact players within 4 plays. This looks to be a big loss for IU as they head into Illinois for a big match up. The had a slim chance as it was, but without two of their biggest stars, the odds just got alot worse.
Thigpen will be out for 4 weeks, with Geno Johnson out for 3 weeks. Thigpen got hurt on his one and only carry of the game.
