Players of the Week/Highlights/Awards/Injuries

Players of the Week

Week 1

Darryl Tapp was this week's player of the game. While his stats may look weaker, with just 3 tackles and 2 sacks, he made his presence known throughout the entire game; Tony Romo was pushed to the ground almost every passing play. Tapp can also take credit for at least one of the team's interceptions, because he rushed the quarterback into a poor decision.

Injuries
No injuries to report. In game 1, Aaron Rodgers went down for 7 snaps with a bruised knee, but Seneca Wallace came in and did work.

NFL Extreme Makeover: The City of Atlanta Graciously Welcomes New Faces

ATLANTA, Georgia (Associated Press) — August 31, 2009 marks a new beginning for the city of Atlanta, the state of Georgia, and the continental United States. Today marks the beginning of a new kind of football league. A fantasy drafted football league. When the clock struck midnight, all 32 NFL team owners gathered to take part in a first-of-its-kind event.

More than 1,000 of the world's finest athletes were displaced from their original teams following a non-violent strike against Commissioner Roger Goodell. NFL Player Union representatives elected new Co-Commissioners, BonesMahoney and Tokyoo, to refresh the league and start with a clean slate. The two commissioners decided the only way to garner new interest in the league was to hold a draft. Not a rookie draft; but one of epic proportions. All players in the NFL would be stripped of their contracts and placed into a hypothetical pool, from which all 32 team owners could choose a 54 player roster by way of a random ordered snake draft.

Co-Commissioners BonesMahoney and Tokyoo decided to take a Bud Selig approach by each taking control of a team of their own. Bones took ownership of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, while Tokyoo received the keys to the Atlanta Falcons. The draft order was then randomized, with Tokyoo and the Falcons receiving the 2nd overall pick in the draft. Due to the snake order, the Falcons would select 31st in each of the even-numbered draft rounds.

Tokyoo's approach to the draft became evident shortly after it began. With the second overall pick in the draft, she selected cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, arguably the biggest game changer on defense in the entire league. With her next two picks, Tokyoo made quick work snatching up cornerback Darrelle Revis and running back Chris Johnson. "We [the Falcons' front office] had a clear-cut plan to what we wanted in the first three rounds. We were completely shocked and thrilled to see that we could fulfill these plans, automatically securing the strongest cornerback tandem in the league along with the fastest running back in the league," Tokyoo was quoted after the draft.

The next 51 rounds took a painstaking 2 and a half hours, but in the end, everyone was happy with their results. Falcons fans all over the nation rejoiced at the prospect of their team actually being a contender for the first time in 10 years; the Falcons haven't been to the Super Bowl since their bullshit luck on a Gary Anderson chokejob in the 1998 NFC Championship. The new team is built for years to come, with not one player over the age of thirty. One Falcons fan exclaimed, "Dude have you seen the new team? No one is going to pass on us, and if they run, man we have Demeco Ryans! Offense? Chris Johnson, Aaron Rodgers, Le'Ron McClain, Braylon Edwards, 3 beast rookie tight ends and the best young offensive line in the league? Watch out NFL, the Dirty Birds are back!"

NFL beware. The Dirty Birds are back.

Dolphins Drown in the Dome

ATLANTA, Georgia (Associated Press) — The new Atlanta Falcons' regime notched their first win last night in dramatic fashion, upending the Miami Dolphins 17-14 in the final minutes. First round pick Nnamdi Asomugha showed his worth by sealing the game with an interception of Tony Romo.

The game started poorly for the Falcons, who drove down the field on their first possession only to settle for a Matt Prater field goal, his first of four in the game. The following kickoff resulted in a complete change of momentum, when Eddie Royal left everyone in the dust on a 107 yard kick return for a touchdown. The Falcons' next drive stalled, but they were pleased to place the Dolphins deep in their own territory with a great punt by Brett Kern. This pleasure was soon lost after Roddy White blew up the Falcons' cover 2 defense for an 83 yard touchdown reception. The Falcons were quickly down by 14-3, and things were not looking up.

The Dolphins began the second half with possession of both the ball and a 17-6 lead. The Falcons needed a momentum changer, and it came in the form of a strong defensive stand followed by a 3rd down 44 yard reception by rookie tight end Brandon Pettigrew, who broke 3 tackles on his way to the Dolphins' 16 yard line. The entire offense was fatigued when rookie running back Donald Brown was given his one carry of the game, which turned into one of the biggest plays of the game. He took the ball on a halfback blast, cut left, and left the entire defense on their knees as he jogged into the endzone for the first touchdown of his young career. The following play, Owner-Coach Tokyoo knew she needed a 2 point conversion. "I decided to give it to who was hot," she lated said after the game. Donald Brown was left in at running back, and caught a swing pass to bring the Falcons' within a field goal of the lead.

The Falcons' defense continued their stellar play in the second half as they made more and more stops, including a Darrelle Revis interception which led to the go-ahead field goal with about a minute remaining in regulation. The Dolphins' had one more chance to win the game as they drove down the field with no timeouts remaining. With 20 seconds remaining, Tony Romo lobbed one up to Roddy White near the endzone, one of the few passes in star cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha's direction all game. He made quick work of it, snatching it out of the air, simultaneously ending the Dolphins' hopes of victory. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers knelt the ball as Atlanta fans went wild over the prospects of the coming season. "SUPER BOWL BABY! WE GOING TO MIAMI," one fan was heard screaming as the final seconds ticked away.

We'll see you in Miami, Falcon fans!
