Last weekend Avatar was finally toppled from its reign as box office champ by a movie directed at young females and couples. This weekend it could end up in fourth place as three new movies arrive that appeal to different audiences and have the potential to open with over $20 million. Valentine's Day is packed with more stars than any movie in memory. The ensemble cast includes Julia Roberts, Jamie Foxx, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Bradley Cooper, Ashton Kutcher, Jennifer Garner, Anne Hatha...

Could this finally be the weekend that Avatar gets knocked out of the top spot? Some are looking at Dear John to do just that as it appeals to a younger female crowd that may not be as interested in the festivities surrounding the Super Bowl. However I see Avatar staying atop for a final time this weekend despite yet another strong opening from a challenger. Also entering the market is the John Travolta action pic From Paris With Love. Dear John may not be a movie familiar to the masses but...

This could be the third straight week where a movie opens strong but still can't unseat Avatar which will probably remain in the top spot as it has for all seven weekends it has been out. Mel Gibson headlines a movie for the first time since 2002 with Edge of Darkness while When in Rome goes for the light romantic comedy crowd. Could Edge of Darkness unseat Avatar? The R rated thriller has a shot but it doesn't seem likely. There is definitely interest in seeing Mel Gibson again as he hasn'...

There is little threat to Avatar capturing the crown for the sixth straight weekend at the box office. It should actually see a boost after winning Best Picture at the Golden Globes. New entries include the family pic Tooth Fairy, the supernatural action-thriller Legion, and the medical drama Extraordinary Measures. No matter how terrible it looks a family targeted film should never be underestimated and having Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson starring only helps. Looking at the opening of compara...

The first threat to Avatar's reign at the top of the box office arrives this weekend with The Book of Eli. Also new for the weekend is the Jackie Chan comedy The Spy Next Door while The Lovely Bones expands wide after showing in very limited release for the last month. The last few years have changed the perception of January as being a dumping ground for studios. The Book of Eli looks to take advantage of an opening by providing the star-power of Denzel Washington and a story that will app...

While Avatar will once again dominate the box office and finish at the top for the fourth straight weekend there are a couple new entries which appeal to unique crowds. Daybreakers provides a darker option, Leap Year is a traditional romantic comedy, and Youth in Revolt tries to provide the hipper comedy. Vampires face a crisis as the human blood supply dries up in Daybreakers. Reviews started out very encouraging with unanimous positives early on but as more have come in those initial enth...

A few new big offerings hit theaters in time for Christmas while a few others expand to wide release after limited runs. Sherlock Holmes targets a more adult and action oriented crowd, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel goes right for the younger children, and It's Complicated hopes to connect with older movie-goers. Up in the Air had a positive run through December and will see how the word-of-mouth carries it while Nine has not been as lucky with the general response or reviews. Despite...

The long awaited arrival of Avatar is finally here as it opens today in a record number of 3D and IMAX screens. Playing the role of counter-programming, or depending on perspective being led out to slaughter, is the comedy Did You Hear about the Morgans? With approximately 2000 3D screens, 178 IMAX screens, and other locations showing the regular 2D print Avatar is primed for a huge opening. It won't have the same massive screen count of other blockbusters but that could end up adding to ...
