Two new movies open this weekend and at least one of them should topple The Blind Side for the top spot. The animated Disney film The Princess and the Frog targets the younger set while Invictus appeals to an older crowd and hopes to draw support for a potential Best Picture nomination. In what comes across as a classic Disney animated offering The Princess and the Frog will slant more towards females. That is not necessarily a bad thing but it does limit its potential. It does not releas...

Four new movies that don't have particularly large expectations hit theaters this weekend. After a few weeks of heavy hitting blockbusters there is a wide array here that are targeting particular factions of moviegoers. The Blind Side will almost certainly capture the top spot for the weekend with New Moon dropping to second. After that the new additions to the market will start falling into place. Armored is going for the action crowd with a familiar theme of a heist movie. It was not sc...

The day before Thanksgiving tends to perform only slightly better than a normal weekday. Thanksgiving is generally slow but then the day after is one of the busiest of the year. On Wednesday three carryovers in New Moon, The Blind Side, and 2012 topped the new offerings and that will likely continue through the weekend. Opening yesterday was the martial-arts movie Ninja Assassin which debuted with $3.3 million, the comedy Old Dogs which starts with $3.1 million, and the stop-motion animat...

Of course the big release this weekend is The Twilight Saga: New Moon. The movie is breaking records for advance sales and is accounting for over 90% of tickets sold for the coming weekend. Opening against it are two family targeted films which may not be the ideal counter-programming but should still draw respectably. The original Twilight opened with $69.6 million which made it the fifth biggest opening ever in November. New Moon is expected to soar past that and could potentially break...

2012 has the feel of a summer blockbuster and as such no other studio placed a film to go up against its opening weekend. A few weeks ago the industry expectations had 2012 bringing in over 60 million for the weekend but as release nears the target number seems to have drifted down to the low-mid 50s. Starring John Cusack and Amanda Peet, 2012 is the work of director Roland Emmerich who has brought previous disaster movies such as Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow to big screen....

This weekend represents the unofficial start to the holiday movie season with the release of four new films that all have their own unique appeal. The first holiday themed movie arrives with A Christmas Carol while the other three look to attract comedy, suspense, or horror crowds. None of the four however are receiving overwhelmingly good reviews. Yet another retelling of the famous Charles Dickens novel arrives with A Christmas Carol which features the voice of Jim Carrey in the headlin...

The documentary about the final months and days of Michael Jackson's life, featuring footage of preparation for the concert tour he was planning, arrives in theaters tomorrow. In some places the movie begins showing at 9pm tonight. This Is It will only be in theaters for a limited two week run before moving on to DVD and Blu-ray in December. There have been rumors though that the theater run will be extended or it will have a second engagement down the line if it does as well as expected. ...

Halloween arrives a week early at the box office as the now yearly installment of the Saw franchise is released. Saw VI will look to continue the astonishingly consistent performance of the sequels. The best chance of a strong box office pull is presented by releasing this weekend rather than next Friday. If it waited until that close to Halloween it would have a light Saturday audience and only the one day to take advantage of the anticipation of the holiday. Now Saw will likely have a big ...
