Alice In Wonderland Wins Second Straight Weekend
As expected Alice in Wonderland came in #1 having fended off four new entries in theaters. All four of them actually came in under industry expectations but in the same order that most expected. Alice has now made over $200 million but will have only one more weekend with most of the 3D screens.
Green Zone, the Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass re-teaming, came in under $15 million despite a strong marketing push and ties to the Bourne franchise. Reviews have been mixed (mine will be up today ...
Huge Opening Day for Alice In Wonderland
Showing just how much impact 3D can have on an already high interest film, Alice in Wonderland opened to a massive $41 million on Friday. That puts it on track for a weekend take of around $115 million. The Oscars could slightly impact its Sunday gross.
With this the film has broken the record for the biggest opening day for a non-sequel and now has the second biggest opening day of all-time behind only Twilight: New Moon. Blowing by the expectations that pegged it in the $60-70 range, Alic...
Shutter Island Fends Off Cop Out and The Crazies
Despite winter storms in some areas of the country keeping people home the top five movies accounted for over $80 million. For the second straight weekend Shutter Island topped the box office. Falling a reasonable 45% from its massive opening last weekend it was able to pull in $22.2 million. The movie has already made back its budget which was a relatively modest $75 million in just 10 days. The openings for Cop Out and The Crazies were solid but unspectacular.
Bruce Willis and Tracy Morga...
Shutter Island Gives Scorsese and DiCaprio Their Biggest Openings Ever
The decision by Paramount to push Shutter Island back from October 2009 was met with some criticism at the time but has paid off big for the studio. Shutter opened to a massive $40.2 million and dominated the weekend box office. This represented the largest opening weekend gross in the career of both director Martin Scorsese (The Departed $26.9 million) and star Leonardo DiCaprio (Catch Me if You Can $30.1 million).

Valentine’s Day Wins Huge Box Office Weekend
There has been a lot of talk leading up to release how Valentine's Day was able to keep its budget under $50 million despite having a star-studded ensemble cast. The studio was so confident in it becoming a hit that even a sequel is already in the works. The formula has certainly paid off already as Valentine's Day made $52.4 million over the weekend which included three others making over $20 million.
As anticipated the terrible reviews for Valentine's Day did nothing to damage its potenti...
Dear John Tops Avatar For Box Office Win
Years from now it may become a trivia question. What movie ended Avatar's reign at the top of the box office after winning seven straight weekends? The answer is the Nicholas Sparks novel adaptation Dear John which soared past all industry expectations to make over $32 million. The military angle may have been what was most underestimated as the film was targeted not just to the younger female demo but also heavily marketed in military areas. Avatar still only dropped 24% to $23.6 million taki...
Weekend Box Office Results 1/29-1/31
Avatar won its seventh straight weekend easily while the two new entries performed right on with the predictions. Avatar now owns the record for highest weekend gross for every weekend except its first. It will pass Titanic for the all time domestic record this coming week and cruise past $2 billion worldwide.
In second place it was the Mel Gibson revenge pic Edge of Darkness. Despite not having starred in a movie since 2002 it drew a solid $17.1 million which was a reasonable result for a ...
Avatar Passes Titanic to Become Biggest Movie Ever
Many considered Titanic's record of $1.835 billion made worldwide to be unbreakable. Today Avatar surpassed that amount and did so in less than six weeks of release to become the highest grossing film of all time. It will soon cruise past $2 billion and there are no indications it will be dropping off any time soon.
Domestically Avatar still trails Titanic by $46 million which sets it up to break that record of $600 million by the end of next weekend. It will likely even see a slight boost ...
