It’s no surprise that The Hunger Games would be huge but it exceeded even the highest of expectations with its first weekend of release. The film opened with $155 million for the weekend which falls behind only Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 ($169 million) and The Dark Knight ($158 million). Having wider appeal in demographics allowed it to surpass Twilight which was not anticipated as being likely. Industry expectations were in the $100-120 million range.

Worldwide total is already up to $214 million. Records started being broken with it’s midnight showings early Friday ($19.75 million) and continued with the largest take from IMAX ever ($10.6 million), the biggest March and non-summer opening weekend, and easily the largest non-sequel opening in history.
