With Breaking Bad coming to an end – the final eight episodes will air this summer – creator Vince Gilligan is looking towards the future and that may hold a spinoff featuring the Saul Goodman character played by Bob Odenkirk. AMC is working with him on the idea though nothing has been formally decided upon. The concept was first mentioned by Gilligan last year:

“I would love to see a Saul Goodman spinoff…I like the idea of a lawyer show in which the main lawyer will do anything it takes to stay out of a court of law. He’ll settle on the courthouse steps, whatever it takes to stay out of the courtroom. That would be fun — I would like that.”

The question is though whether a side-character, especially one that has provided much of the comic relief in what otherwise is a dark show, would translate to a main character for an hour long or even half hour series. It seems as though networks consider it pretty often (NBC with Rainn Wilson’s Dwight Schrute from The Office being the most recent example) but then ultimately end up shelving it. Whether Gilligan goes this route or to something completely new it’ll be highly anticipated though.
