    The nominations for the 87th Academy Awards were announced today. Leading the way was Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel with nine nominations each. The Imitation Game follows right behind with eight while Birdman and American Sniper received six. The biggest snub is arguably The Lego Movie which didn't receive a nod for Best Animated Film.     Oscar nominations have been announced and American Hustle leads the way with 10 including 4 in the acting categories and Best Picture. Gravity tied it with 10 nominations including Best Picture, Actor, and Actress. 12 Years a Slave, arguably the favorite to win Best Picture, has 9 nominations.     The 86th Academy Awards will be hosted by Ellen DeGeneres. Producers had interest in bringing back Seth MacFarlane but he decided to withdraw from consideration for the taxing and highly-scrutinized gig. DeGeneres hosted in 2007 in what was considered by many to be a safe and largely boring show though she still received an Emmy nomination for it.     Life of Pi led the way with the most Oscar wins (four) but it was Argo that walked away with the big prize. Despite snubbing director Ben Affleck with no nomination Argo won Best Picture while Ang Lee walked away with Best Director. No big surprises in the acting categories as Daniel Day-Lewis and Jennifer Lawrence took the top honors.  (more…)...

    It was a night at the 2012 Academy Awards that included some significant surprises - with a number of high profile categories not going to those expected to win - and the more technical and writing-based categories turning out some interesting results as well.     The nominations for this years Oscars were announced this morning! The new process involved with the Best Picture category means as few as 5 and as many as 10 nominees can be up for the final vote. In this case it was 9 that made the cut and no one expected it to be that many. The honor of having the most nominations went to Hugo with 11 and The Artist followed close behind with 10.   • Billy Crystal Takes Over as Oscar Host

    Just yesterday Eddie Murphy dropped out as host of the Oscars - which followed on the heels of the departure of producer Brett Ratner. Taking Ratner's place running the show is Brian Grazer and today it has been confirmed that Billy Crystal has been chosen as the new host. It's not surprising, given the recent controversies, that the Academy would go with a familiar and safe choice. This will be Crystal's 9th time hosting the show....
