Adrian Peterson: Madden 09 cover front-runner

November 7, 2007 by pastapadre

peterson3a.jpg

Last year prior to the Madden 08 cover announcement I supported the idea of putting selecting Devin Hester. There was no doubt he was one of the most valuable players in the league and arguably the most exciting. The impact he had for his team was unmatched although in a non-traditional way through special teams.

This year it’s another rookie that looks like he could be the most appealing option for the Madden cover. Adrian Peterson has quickly established himself as the best RB in the league, even breaking the single game rushing record this past weekend with 296 yards. Not only does he lead the league in rushing, he is over 300 yards ahead of Willie Parker who is second. Oh, and he does all of this while the Vikings have no passing game and the opposition keys in on trying to stop the run.

Something that has been sorely lacking from Madden the last couple years is the level of overall excitement. There is no “game day” feel, everything just comes across as bland. Choosing a cover player that could get across improvements to that aspect of the game and fit in with the yearly hype behind Madden would be ideal. Peterson would be a great representative, better than Vince Young was. Young had success as the Titans overachieved, however it was more due their defense than him performing at a high level. That has been the case again this season. I’m not sure there is anyone that even makes sense other than Peterson right now.

When you look at possibilities for 09, guys like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Randy Moss are basically invalidated due to previous covers they have been on. LaDainian Tomlinson has already turned down the Madden cover so he won’t be given another opportunity. Choosing Young for 08 went away from how EA had previously put a player that represented the game’s theme for the year. So it is hard to know whether that will become a trend or if they’ll go back to it. Will they look for a defensive player or just the most marketable? There are a lot of variables to consider.

We’ve only reached the halfway point of the season so things may look completely different by the time the year ends. But as of right now who do you see as the top candidates for the 09 cover?

the madden 09 coverboy should be RYAN LEAF…

    that’s right, i said…and i know all of you were thinking it…

and if you weren’t…let me put it to you this way…

RYAN LEAF and MADDEN NFL…both have all of the tools and hype to be successful…but once it comes time to actually take the field…you know that your untested product on the next level (NFL or Next-Gen consoles) is going to give you more problems than you could have ever imagined…

Adrian Peterson would be perfect for the Madden 09 cover.

I’d just rather not lose AD for any part of next year. Granted, Chester Taylor is a solid started in his own right. But, wow - AD is too good.

Maybe give the cover to Favre? =)

Yeah I thought of Favre too, but they’ll want someone that is 100% guaranteed to play next season.

Man, forget the rookie- I am a game changer. I give it all when I’m on the field and am always looking to hit someone. I’m one of the reasons why the Colts have a good defense.

It’s time to show me some respect. You put one defensive player on the cover of madden so why not add another. Defensive players aren’t scared by people- we do the scaring. I’m the best defensive player and deserve to be on Madden 09.

  7. Bukktown on November 7th, 2007 8:59 am Quote

    NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please no . It’s all us Vikings fans have to cheer for.

  8. Jonathon on November 7th, 2007 9:44 am Quote

interesting choice…bob sanders IS the reason that the INDY defense is so good…unfortunately he doesn’t have the fan-base or high profile like some other players in the league…think about the addition they could add to franchise mode…’veteran presence’…reward us players who keep veterans on our roster and their influence helps the younger players on your team progress better…and helps their side of the ball follow their assignments more accurately…because we all know that we usually trade off our veterans for cheaper and faster rookies and 1st-year players(because in franchise, overall rating doesn’t mean much)…

I second the Ryan Leaf nomination. Or maybe even Brian”the Boz” Bozworth. But seriously, whats up with the update? It’s been months of no franchise mode and online play is getting boring and cheesy now.

While I really like Peterson, saying he’s the best RB (at least talent-wise)in the NFL is a stretch. LT is still #1. I do think he has established himself as the #2, though. Both could end up in the HoF (LT is already a lock).

How about Bill Belichick with a pair of binoculars. Then maybe the curse will hit him and he’ll get run over on the sideline play.

    How about Brian Westbrook?

  15. Mighty Boom on November 7th, 2007 6:32 pm Quote

Let EA concetrait on fixing the flaws in the game first. For example, why is a quarterback able to sprint 20 yards in the back field and complete TD passes throwing off the back of his foot? Why can D linemen run down the fastest QBs in the game from behind? Im convinced that the people making this game have no interest in the game of football outside of making the game.

I’m glad you used AD instead of stupid AP his nickname is not AP btw it’s AD as in All Day. Anyways I think anyone who had watched AD from his days of running over UT bitches to now in the NFL knows he is extremely exciting but I don’t think that should be a cover worthy thing. Maybe Brady they need to use a white guy anyway

I love football games….I have been purchasing every single NCAA & Madden for the past 10 years, but there will be no future purchases of EA titles unless they incorporate the use of online leagues. The importance on having a strong online aspect for gaming is key today, I don’t think madden has change there online system since xbox live has started. What’s the fun in playing random games that don’t mean anything?

  18. shoeprint on November 8th, 2007 10:17 am Quote

I like the game, but that what I hate the most about Live/Madden/College… no league. All the cats I work w/ have the xbox 360 and we have leagues in NBA 2k8 and APF 2k8 and other stuff… I played college online like 3 times… Madden (when I rented it) none. I hope when they finish my favorite game “Fight Night” they do something nice online…

Now, regarding the topic in question how about 2 players on the cover? (like the 2000 version). Maybe Strahan and Umenyora? And by the way, no disrespect to Sean Taylor and his legacy, but Darrent Williams of the Broncos was slain for no reason, no suspects has been found and nobody seems to give a damn…

Madden doesn’t put non African-American Athletes on their cover. I don’t know why everyone skirts the issue. Its just the facts. Also with the exception of Ray Lewis (which was a theme based pick for that year) The cover has always been a QB or a RB. Currently there are no QB in the NFL that are both African-American and Explosive enough to grace a Madden Cover, not even David Garrard.

That leaves only the RB spot from which to select from and that choice is a simple no brainer. LT will never get it since he turned it down and the only other selection is ADRIAN PETERSEN.

Barring any freak deviation from the norm AP is the only choice, but if a freak deviation is the order of the day then my choice would be Devin Hester.

If Devin Hester was is on the cover, they had better revamp that special teams play otherwise its a wasted cover.

Eli Manning becuase he was the Super Bowl MVP, he’s a great quarterback like his brother and plus we never had a white player on the cover of Madden. He’s always focused and calm. He took his team to the playoffs and to the super bowl and upset the patriots which I’m glad they lost because I don’t like the Patriots. That was one of the best super bowl upsets I’ve ever watched. He didn’t even turn the ball over in the playoffs. Also his brother Peyton won the super bowl two seasons ago. Now Eli won the super bowl the following season his brother won it. That’s incredible. That’s why I say he should be on the cover of Madden’09.
