Good look at the state of All-Pro Football 2K8

I've been talking about many of the issues surrounding APF 2K8 for a while, and been taking some flack for it from 2K fans. Despite this, I felt that I was being fair, and presenting from a perspective that was relevant.

When evaluating what 2K needed to do to break into the market and come away successful with a game such as this, I took a look at what they needed to do to achieve that back in March. They simply haven't come through on much, and in many ways gone backwards. Cutting out franchise mode is probably the most obvious example.

5w-g.com has posted up a back and forth discussion on 2K8 which includes analysis of how things are coming together. You can read it by clicking here. Many great points are made, and this is coming from two guys who are well respected in the community and have no bias one way or the other.

Amusingly (but not surprisingly) they are taking criticism and having insults slung their way. Some just can't seem to comprehend that their opinions are not be shared by many at this point and thus go on to attack the people who point those things out, such as Shawn and Mark at 5wg.

This type of discussion should be important to 2K and fans of the series, since it is necessary that the game pull some general fans of football games in. It can not survive solely off the small group of hardcore 2K fans. Right now, the game just does not seem to have anything compelling that is going to sway people into purchasing it as a 2nd or 3rd football game for their library.

Madden has nothing compelling to sway me to buy IT.
Madden animations are horrible and the players in the game look like the incredible hulk, even the wimpy punters – when it comes to animation and players, concerning which is closer to reality – it’s APF in a landslide.

    Fair enough.

I’d agree that the Madden player models have been too big, I especially dislike how they have looked slouched over and all had the same stance. I believe they’ve made some improvements though for 08 in that area.

You know, Pasta, I find if fascinating how when people criticize any part of the 2K football games that they are called biased and fanboys by the 2K hardcores. I understand that they are ticked off that their football game went away and they want APF2K8 to be everything they hoped and dreamed it would be, but I think they go over the line when they start attacking people that have seen/played the game and haven’t been impressed. If it’s not that good, it’s not that good. Those same people have basked in the glory of EA pushing out two sub-par releases on the 360, but now that the tables have turned, they have become even more rabid than ever before.

I can only speak for myself here, but if a game is good I will buy it, play it, and like it. i don’t care who makes it as long as it is good. I just wish people just lay off the fanboyism, no game is perfect and some games weren’t nearly as good as people think they were.
