NCAA Football 09 demo now available

by pastapadre
Posted June 19th, 2008 at 6:11 am

The demo for NCAA Football 09 is now available for the Xbox 360 and as of this afternoon it is up for the PS3. The demo features LSU vs Ohio State and a mascot game with the Gators vs Longhorns. Both games have two minute quarters and are played on varsity difficulty level.

Feel free to leave your impressions of the demo in the comments or discuss the game in the forum. I’ll be posting up some videos from the demo this evening along with thoughts in general after the significant hands-on time I’ve gotten out of the two community events.

im just writing to answer some people questions about why people are wearing the same jersey numbers, in college football players can have the same jersey number as long as they are on different sides of the ball. So, if a wide out is number 11 and the safety is number 11 it is fine.

This is what i mean nex gen seriously this is wat i mean, the wide recievers actually have many and great animations for catching the ball when its in front of them and out of reach unless they use their hands to catch it. they actually even have the espn 2k5 catch see here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=T4owKOz2Hdg :, my tight end caught one of those. The animations are really smooth, and the running game is pretty good kind of hard but i think everyone will have it mapped down when they do the madden IQ training thing in madden 09. Passing the ball looks better than ever also.

Progressive lighting is when the lighting and the shadowing on the field gradually progresses. For example when you played at 6:00pm the sun would still be up but by the 2nd half it would be nightime. Or when you play a daytime game you would notice the shadows on the field gradually moving as if it was a live breathing enviornment. We had progressive lighting like almost 10 years ago when the PS2 1st came out. It was also in NCAA 08. I’m very suprised EA left that out this year.

Guys I know this is just the demo and maybe this is a product of EA releasing it so early, but the more I play it the more glitches I’m starting to notice. For example on a couple passing plays my quaterback would drop back 7 yards and stop but his feet kept moving even though he was going anywhere. Also there’s this one tackle animation, which I’m sure most of you have probably noticed already, where my guy will barely get touched but he will get flatened out like a pancake by the defender. WTF? I’m not nitpicking but I just hope these bugs get ironed out by release.

I love everything about the game, but the pass completion is going to drive me crazy unless the sliders can tone it down. The computer does throw some errant passes but he completes to many. It almost feels like when I really want to stop them I cannot cause my db’s get burned badly. The games have moslty all been low scoring but the qb’s % is a bit too high.

Madden 07 had it but not 08. You would’ve thought that EA would’ve automatically added progressive lighting to go along with the improvements but hey they didn’t add coaches on the sidelines to go along with the sideline improvements either so maybe there’s a trend here.

Oh and one other thing, it’s kind of sucks that they don’t have progressive lighting & shadowing to go along with the lighting improvements. This is the only aspect that took a step backwards. Progressive lighting really gives you the feeling that you’re playing in a live breathing enviornment. Not nitpicking but that really stood out in the demo because it’s set for 6:00pm & I loved how in last years game it would gradually turn into a nightime game. FYI EA, once a feature like this is in the game, YOU CAN NOT TAKE IT OUT THE FOLLOWING YEAR!
If I remember correctly the Demo for 08 did not have progressive lighting but the full game did.

PASTA!!!! Please, When you played at the events was there progressive lighting? I agree that it adds to the realism and would be a big step backwards for me. I remember when I got Madden 08 I was wonering why it didnt have progressive lighting but NCAA did.
Yea dude Pasta already confirmed that there was no progressive lighting this year in both NCAA & Madden. He said that they weren’t able to get that far with the new lighting system. This is a big disappointment for me. Some people don’t care & will think it’s nitpicking but my point is that it’s a typical EA move..One step forward two steps backwards..I’m not trying to bash EA & I love the game this year but sometimes I question their priorities. Refs, chaingangs, & progressive lighting should’ve been amongst the 1st things added this year. But oh well, no use crying over spilled milk. Hopefully the gameplay & atmosphere will keep me so engaged that I won’t think about the important things that were left out.
Not Good. I’ll miss it.

I just played it twice, once on each side. I like the new visuals in the menus and the playcalling screen is greatly improved. The graphics are great. I saw alot of animations that looked new and very little of the same tackles over and over again. I saw some cool QB sack animations and some VERY cool WR animations. 2 WR animations where they tiptoed to stay in-bounds and another one footer in the back of the endzone.

    NO SUPERHUMAN LINEBACKERS!

Tone down the stupid cheerleaders pleaase

I saw the CPU attempt 4 long bombs, 1 of which completed for a 56 yard TD!!!!
I had time to pass the ball on play-action passes for once, but only when I called them at the right time.
The running was very cool and it seemed looked like my player was FIGHTING for yards, never giving up until going down, i like that. Great so far

Think about how much action is going down though. Even by the end you’ve only been on the field to what amounts to mid-2nd quarter in a 5 min quarter game.

I ran nothing but screen plays on my 3rd game and it worked everytime. took 5 screen play to the house in 1 game. took my qb and ran like 20 or 30 yards back and still hit my receiver everytime. i also ran quarter D the whole game and they still couldn’t run on me. i’m a little skeptical about plays that work too well and all the time kinda like the option play from madden 08. it’s prolly a varsity thang (hope so). graphics are a bit better, game is smooth. i give this demo a 6 cuz of the dropbacks and screen plays that worked all the time.

I don’t know about the QB’s feet…..but just so you know, a QB is NEVER supposed to stop moving his feet. If a QB stands still it takes that person longer to throw the ball than a QB that continues to move his feet. I don’t know if it is a glich or if that is the concept they were trying to achieve.

No it’s not that, he’ll be running it a stand still position. Have you ever seen a Tazmanian Devil cartoon? You know how he’ll start moving his feet really fast before he actually takes off? That’s what it looks like.

I understand this is demo, but I feel that they have a long way to go to satisfy my expectations as a consumer. They (EA) still dont have the atmosphere right in my opinion. What i mean is that the sidelines need to be more alive, still very sparse, and why does the crowd still look very flat and crowd animations suck…still! Thats where college football atmosphere starts. This is supposed to be next gen….right? Lets talk about gameplay. From what I can tell, there only marginal improvments,

    1. Animations are kind of off, sideline catches in the middle of the field, defensive returns fumble or interceptions looks the players are coasting and not running with a sense of urgency, can understand if no players are around. what is up with the Forrest Gump running style until you press sprint.

    2. The foot plant for running backs and receivers doesn’t accurately represent their counterparts. They’re still skip juking. You still can’t turn up sideline plays. Defensive players just stand still unless they are actively doing something. Example: when you play zone coverage and until the ball is thrown, they just stand there, literally. The difference in foot speed should be more evident. Especially when it comes to size of players. the smaller quicker players should have quicker stride turn over but maybe cover less ground per stride. While the tall bigger players should have more of a longer stride but cover more ground per stride. That also leads into the speed issue. The difference in speed should be a little bit greater. If you’ve ever played football, everything happens fast. Linebackers shouldn’t be able to completely outrun wide receivers. Defensive linemen (unless noted that they’re actually fast), Shouldn’t be able to chase a fast halfback down the backside.

Why was the button option for throwing to a running back in the flats switched from RB to LB?…..That’s irriating and stupid.
The return game still needs work. Reactions to the ball need to be better from everyone. There is a lot more, but I’m tired of typing. i can say one good thing. The player models look a lot better, but this game is far from a finished product. A lot of these issues should not exist considering this is the 4th edition on next gen. Let’s get it right people.

I don’t want to be negative about the game but I have to say I agree with everything you just said. Especially when returning a kick the returner runs straight upward like Forrest Gump until you sprint. lol. I also noticed the linebackers standing still during plays. I am glad they got rid of the super linebacker who had eyes in the back of his head & could jump 10 feet in the air. lol

Well, I’ve played about 5 games now and still not impressed. QB slides while under center. Throwing on the run is still very accurate. Frame rate skips sometimes. Had a play where the cpu completes a pass and the receiver runs the wrong way about 20 yards wtf. precision passing doesn’t work quite well. You can stop the run on almost any defense called (just crowd the line). Looks like i’ll be waiting for 2010.

I’m wondering why there’s a lot of good feedbacks on this game. It is basically the same game every year. Graphics looks a little better. Animations are pretty much the same. Can’t tell the difference in footplanting from last year. Explosion tackles are still in. Running sucks. When turning, the runner doesn’t stop, plant their foot, and then go the other direction. Screen play works too well.

Before hand, i didnt think id be able to tell a difference from this yrs game to last yrs, but after spending time with the demo, i couldnt be more wrong. The game really does look alot better. The players actually look like college players. Most of the animations are better and the new ones look good.

However, from what i can tell, thats as far as it goes. The crowd is still HORRIBLE. I mean f’ing monkeys could make a crowd that actually felt like a crowd found at a college football game. Even tho, the animations are nice looking, the same ones from 2 yrs ago are still popping up, with only few new ones. The commentary is still unchaged and boring. I dont think ANY one in the EA office has EVER even watched college football let alone attended a game.
