With NFL Draft day quickly approaching look for the Madden Mock Draft to finish up by next Wednesday. I’ll have my true mock draft ready to post while I’m in New York on Thursday.

Now up are the Buccaneers, Lions, and Eagles. Three teams with unique needs that can be addressed sufficiently with impact players who remain on the board. Continue on to check out the selections and leave your thoughts in the comments. Remember this is more about what players would improve the teams the most in Madden 10 and beyond than it is a prediction of who will be taken in the NFL Draft.

#19 – Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Josh Freeman – QB – Kansas State

bucsfreeman

The Bucs could use their future at QB here if one of the top names were to be available or they could most benefit from help on the defensive line at both end and tackle. That narrowed down choices to Robert Ayers, Michael Johnson, or Peria Jerry vs Josh Freeman and Pat White. It was a tough decision but Freeman ends up being the selection. He has the potential to see the field this year and improve his initial ratings. The Bucs stable of QBs are merely adequate and by adding Freeman there could be a lot more potential offensively and a better longterm outlook.

#20 – Detroit Lions – Michael Oher – OT – Ole Miss

lionsoher

After selecting Stafford #1 a few other areas of need could be addressed with this pick. Offensive line to help protect their investment in Stafford is the most obvious one. Michael Oher makes for the perfect choice here.

#21 – Philadelphia Eagles – Brandon Pettigrew – TE – Oklahoma State

eaglespettigrew

The concentration for the Eagles here is on the offensive side, primarily looking at TE and RB, especially after upgrading the offensive line by trading for Jason Peters earlier today. Beanie Wells and Knowshon Moreno’s names surface again however Brian Westbrook along with Leonard Weaver negates the need for another RB in Madden. I almost handed Pettigrew to the Bills at #11 so him still being available made for an ideal selection given the loss of LJ Smith.

Check back in a few days for the next three picks in the Madden Mock Draft!

Thats the way they are basically are going to be drafted with the exception of Pettigrew going to the Falcons according to Kiper. I like all your picks so far Pasta.

    Josh Freeman for Bucs?

    I don’t know.

While Bucs do need a quarterback, Josh Freeman is not a type of a quarterback who can start from the day 1. He’s a bit raw and inconsistent and his mechanics and such need some work.

While Bucs have no QB who is worth starting from the day 1, Freeman is not going to help that situation.

I guess Bucs has to draft a QB next season.

I think they need an upgrade at WR position and LB position.

I agree with your choice for Eagles and Lions, PastaPadre.

    Keep it up, I’m following.

I think Josh Freeman will go to either Minnesota Vikings (22nd pick) or to virtually any teams that have an aging starting quarterback or unproven starting quarterback would pick Freeman.

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/okafor43 okafor43

I think the vikes are in a win now mode and wouldnt take a qb that needs time to develope.

        • http://intensedebate.com/people/Sidewinder Sidewinder

Not to mention that Tavaris Jackson was a couple years ago what Josh Freeman would be now. If he doesn't work out, I don't think they'll be too quick to try it again, not with how bad their defensive secondary is getting.

        • http://www.intensedebate.com/people/Sidewinder Sidewinder

Not to mention that they still want to see Tavaris Jackson work out. If he doesn't, I don't think they'll be too quick to try it again, not with how bad their defensive secondary is getting.

You just named what the buc's have aging starting qb's (Byron leftwich) though he is only 29) and Brian Griese) and an unproven possible starters Josh Johnson, Luke McCown. But at the end of the day once again any team taking Freeman will obviously sit him and teach him.

Take WR out and put aging secondary in

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/okafor43 okafor43

Obviously Freeman like most qb's going in the first round would sit for the first year and learn on the job. Not too many rookie qb's comeon and start from day one.

honestly dont think the eagles will go with a TE

Freeman wont go to the Bucs unless they trade down. He's not a first rounder. I say they get a defensive player.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/okafor43 okafor43

Freeman is 6'6 252 wth a rocket arm and nimble feet I would have to say he is first round talent especially in a weak qb class

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/PaleHose Cody

But he's not very accurate, or just makes bad reads. I don't know which but if you look at his stats from this year, he only had one in-conference game where he had a completion percentage over 60%

        • http://intensedebate.com/people/okafor43 okafor43

Hi total completion percentage for the season is 59% the year before was 63%. He has gotten better every year with little talent around him. A qb by the name of jay cutler if you know him had similr completion percentages comming out.

jason peters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and now pettigrew. i hope we get him but we r bound to get a playmaker from that 21 spot anyway. mcnabb will have a quality weapon as long as the eagles take a offensive player with this pick. 2010 will be fun as hell

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/Mr_EA_Sports Mr_EA_Sports

The Jason Peters trade was a big one for the Eagles. He isn't much of an upgrade in the passing game over W. Thomas but he will dominate in the run game. For the record I believe that W. Thomas is the BEST pass Blocking LT in the game today unfortunately he might be the worse run blocking LT in the game today. I think this is due to the Eagles just concentrating on pass blocking for so many years he never developed the proper techniques to dominate in the running game.

Pettigrew would be a nice addition and would give the Eagles improved run blocking and a red zone threat. I would still go after Boldin or Edwards. The reason I would still go after a #1 is because next year everybody is going to be gunning for D. Jackson as they have had a whole year to see what he can do, if the Eagles don't get a #1 WR teams will effectively shadow a safety on him and force him to make a play with a 5'9" body. If you bring in a Boldin or Edwards teams will have to single cover him and he will beat any corner as he has a high football IQ and good techniques to beat the jam at the line of scrimmage.

I can't fathom Josh Freeman having any success in the NFL. The three times I saw him play against Nebraska, he was just 56 of 109 with 2 TD, 2 INT as KSU went 0-3. He may have the prototypical NFL "size," but aside from two upset wins against Texas, he never really accomplished much in Manhattan or lived up to his hype. Though, I will admit that he didn't exactly have a lot of talent around him (Jordy Nelson, and that's about it).

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/okafor43 okafor43

Well as a qb i would think its difficult to win games with nothing surrounding you. what successful qb have you seen done that??? AND Last time i checked he had 20 td passes and 14 rushing td's with nothing around him and only 8 ints thrown.

I would have said Josh should go to the bucs but now that they got byron leftwich I think they have more needs byron leftwich is proven. Just think they have more pressing needs. I say give leftwich a shot this year if he does bad there is going to be a lot of QBs next year some really good ones.

Two months ago I would of said Josh Freeman to the Bucs but after they signed Byron Leftwich I can't see them having 5 QBs on the roster. Raheem Morris is a defensive minded coach and I think he'll either take Peria Jerry or Michael Johnson. The D-line needs fixed in order for the Bucs to succeed, and I think they fixed a lot of holes on the offensive side of the ball in free agency. Should be an exciting draft though. Love the site Padre.

Josh Freeman is COMPLETELY overrated…if the Bucs want a young QB named Josh who can make plays with his arms and legs, they already have one on their roster who is MORE talented than Freeman and even had a MUCH MORE successful college career: Josh Johnson…

Apparently they have a new coach in town and if he isnt a fan of Johnson then he will select somebody he is of. Freeman Overrated?? Its not like we are talking about him going in the top 10. He is around 15-30 range where he should be. You are saying that Josh Johnson who had a horrible combine in Indianapolis and played again weak talent in college has better numbers than Freeman?? Probably So but he didnt face Texas Oklahoma or the big 12 to be exact!

You contradict your self here. You say days of athletic qb's are over but yet you rant about Pat White, who is a running qb and is only around 6'0-6'1. If Freeman had any talent around him he probably wouldnt have to run for dear life all of the time. Now I didnt say if he will or not be a success on the nfl level he is obviously a project that who ever takes him will need time to develop but he has more potential in terms of size and arm strength than Pat White and Nate Davis. and i said that the days of athletic QBs are done UNLESS THE QB CAN ALSO THROW THE BALL EFFECTIVELY…perhaps you haven't seen the zip on Pat White's throws as of late…or you missed the fact that he was the MOST impressive QB throwing the football at the combine…so that is not a contradiction because clearly i think he can throw the ball, not just run…

He has a hitch in his throwing and doesnt read the defense well he is 6'0 and doesnt go through progressions do you want me to keep going….???? He is a better athlete desereves a chance to play qb but will likely be a wr or rb. Does this guy not scream Eric Crouch! And I think Freeman has a cannon arm also so he can throw! I think the Pettigrew pick would be a good selection for the Eagles and I think you hit it dead on Pasta. Originally I said that it seemed a forgone conclusion that the Eagles would take a RB. but after thinking about it they have a tremendous amount of money invested at the RB position with Westbrook alone. NFL teams do not like to over invest financially in one position (unless you're the Detroit Lions i.e. WR). I don't think they will go after a RB in the 1st round but I think they will pick up 1 in the 2nd round.

The Michael Oher pick would be a good one for the Lions as it would give them a good LT to go with a franchise QB and WR. In one more year this team could be dangerous. All they need is a good defense and a quality RB

I think the Lions should pick the best OL available with its first pick….

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/okafor43 okafor43

This is the Lions we are talking about snowball and 16 will choose a qb when they should go safe and take ol-line

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/Skihawks Skihawks

Good point. I agree they need a QB but it doesn't do any good to draft one if they cannot protect him.

Hopefully, the new front office leadership will make some good decisions. If they take Stafford, it is not a horrible pick but it is easier to develop offensive lineman than a QB….Erik Kramer, who wasn't a super flashy QB, was one of Detroit's best QB's in the past 20 years because he had time to throw the ball (and having Barry Sanders didn't hurt)…

        • http://intensedebate.com/people/okafor43 okafor43

Agreed here also. Unfortunately there wont be a Sanders in the back field for Stafford. O lines are always safe picks to me. Other than Tony Mandarich if they are total busts they wont be ridiculed so much.

The salary cap for NFL teams is $124 million. The Eagles prior to free agency had $93 million in contracts for the upcoming season. They traded Lito Sheppard and Greg Lewis. Lito would have made $3 million in base and $4.45 million counted towards the salary cap. By trading Lito they acquired $1.45 million in "dead" money but gained $3 million towards the salary cap. Greg Lewis ha d a midlevel salary at $600 thousand with a cap number of $700 thousand. So the Eagles received $100 thousand in "dead" money and gained $600 thousand towards the cap.

    Running Total: $33.05 million

In the offseason they tendered 3 players OL Nick Cole, WR Hank Baskett, LB Tank Daniels. Nick Cole $1.45 million, Hank Baskett $700 thousand and Tank Daniels $460 thousand will count for a total of $2.61 million against the salary cap

    Running Total: $30.44 million

In Free Agency they signed G/T Stacy Andrews $3-5 million (say $5 million) , FB Leonard Weaver $1.75 million, S Sean Jones $3 million and traded for T Jason Peters $5-8 million (say $8 million).

    Running Total: $12.69 million

In comparison this is more than NYG $12 million, Dallas $3 million and Was -6 million (yes that's negative 6 million) combined. The NYG, DAL and WAS numbers do not even include their recent transactions i.e. cutting TO, cutting Burress and signing Haynesworth. With the a sub 1st round pick they will not be committed to a high salary for a rookie player. So if the eagles wanted to trade for a #1 WR and sign him it's extremely possible without any real affect on their current salary cap situation. Plus they would have a tremendous amount of salary cap relief for next year because of all the 1 year and last year contracts. So sorry Giants fans but if the Eagles want Edwards or Boldin not only could they trade for them with higher picks but they can also sign either one of them for a long term mega deal………….and still have money left over to sign all of the late draft picks
