NCAA Football 10 Strategy Additions

While this week’s blog for NCAA Football 10 is titled Season Showdown Strategy it thankfully has little to do with the Season Showdown mode and concentrates on the new strategy based additions to the game. Those include gameplanning, setup plays, and defensive keys. These are all areas that users will adjust or utilize each game providing more options and ways to attack an opponent. You can check out the full posting here.

With NCAA Football 10 strategy takes on a huge role with three new gameplay features that put the emphasis on out thinking your opponent instead of just out maneuvering him on the sticks. By gameplanning, setting up plays, and keying in on what you think the offense will be running you can affect the outcome of the game just based on your coaching decisions.

At the NY event Ben Haumiller ran through these different areas with me and they all have value. I especially like the setup plays as a user-controlled aspect and the gameplanning as it directs the CPU players on your team to play to a particular style. The defensive keys will especially come in handy when facing another user who has shown tendencies.

This has potential disaster written all over it. Why are they making this a guessing game? I know there is an element of strategy / guessing in real football, but just because I choose to play aggressive my players are going to have a higher tendency to fumble or turn the ball over? Shouldn't this be dictated by the respective players skills? I get what they're trying to accomplish here, but if it's not tweaked right, it can potentially ruin the game. I'm going give them the benefit of the doubt on not overdoing this and making the player ratings mean something.____My biggest beefs in last year's game is that the defense was a joke. I could run a quick slant up and down the field all day and the defense could not stop it even turning up sliders to the max. The defense was swiss cheese, holes everywhere. They made the game one sided on the offensive side of the ball to give it what they called a "college feel" and in the process destroyed dynasty mode. I'm hoping they don't make the same mistake this year with their new features and hopefully they tuned the game so that it provides a challenge and is balanced on both the O and D side of the ball.__

I don't think you have to actually use the strategy. I believe it is there every play but you can opt not to use it so you don't have to "guess" at anything. Again, it is more of an option than a requirement….

As far as gameplanning goes bigger blocks and getting clipping have nothing to do with each other and the main counterpoint to going for the strip is more missed tackles and I would hope it's the 2nd guy that comes in to go for the strip because unless a team's down big in the 4th the 1st guy always goes for the tackle. Besides that this seems like a great idea, provided of course it is tuned properly and the defensive keys and ability to setup plays are also welcome additions.

I like the risk-reward but I am not liking the option to run more aggressively which could lead to more fumbles. I feel if you have a RB that is wrapped up and is fighting for yards after being wrapped up then the risk of a fumble should occur.

My fear is selecting the aggressive running option and your guy gets hit as in any normal play and a fumble occurs. In short, please let there be no cheap fumbles….

That's my fear as well, well I hope not because the game could turn into a turnover fest.

I saw the second Season Showdown video. I like the strategy aspects implemented this year. I also like the fact that the developers addressed potential concerns with set-up plays maxed out not always resulting in huge plays.

Both football games this year are looking great…It is going to be a busy summer. Seven weeks and counting….

Pasta, I may have missed it but any news on a demo release for NCAA and Madden???

Probably two weeks before release. But I did see that someone from the NCAA team said the demo would be out "soon" which would make me think the first half of June.

With all of the attention Madden is getting, and rightfully so, I still think NCAA is going to be an outstanding game. For some reason, it seems that the NCAA game has always played a little more realisticly than Madden…Hopefully, both will be solid emulations this year….

        So pumped….

Below is a portion of the interview on ESPN Video games by Jon Robinson speaking with one of the developers. If this has already been out there, my apologies, but I am pumped about this feature. The ability to select each part of the uniform independently is a big plus….

ESPN: I saw the ability to mix and match uniforms in the game for each team. How will that work?

Ben Haumiller: In years past, you had your home uniform, your away uniform, and you might have a couple of alternates. But this year, we wanted to break these up into individual pieces because there are so many uniforms that are just the change of a pant color or something like that. So we broke all of these up so you can set your helmet, your jersey, your pants and your shoe color independent from each other. Just doing that right there, the number for the potential of alternate jerseys grew exponentially, especially for a team like Oregon who has different helmets and like eight different jersey tops and three or four different pants. If you're playing as Oregon, you can have a completely different uniform ev

I think the defensive keys are awesome. I couldn't stand playing people who did the same thing the entire game and got away with it because my players didn't have memory storage in their brains.

So I think the keys are ok, but first I do nto liek locked buttons on the the defense. Second, defense is still swiss cheese. especially when coverage fails after quarterbacks take two steps outside the pocket. It's stupid the offense keep progressing while the defensive plays remain stagnant. becasue they same game tweaks are in the new ncaa jsut expect everyone to set the same offense audibles, and defensive unrealistic full press and be game as usual.
