Earlier this week much was made of the announcement that Fedor Emelianenko was signed to the EA MMA game, though it had been public knowledge for over a month. Despite the threat of bans from the UFC for anyone aligning themselves with EA he was being hotly recruited by UFC. Now though the chances of that happening have slipped as he is settling in with Strikeforce.

Around all of this there have been some new names confirmed for the game as well as one of the announcers. Previously known to be attached to EA MMA are Randy Couture, Tim Sylvia, Tim Kennedy, Frank Shamrock, Gegard Mousasi, and of course Fedor Emelianenko. Now Renato Sobral, Benji Radach, and Jay Hieron can also be added to the list. Fanhouse has the news Mauro Ranallo is one of the announcers for the game. He is currently the host of “The MMA Show” in Canada and has done play-by-play announcing for both Pride and EliteXC in the past.

So far are these names compelling enough to sell the game on their own? To most probably not, but it does show EA is making an active push to provide a solid roster. The press that Fedor is getting lately is certainly providing a boost recognition wise.

I hope that it is much different than UFC's game so I can justify purchasing it. I love me some MMA! My passion has turned from boxing to mixed martial arts bigtime…

I hope they put Faber and Lawler in the game and keep that ass-clown, Kimbo Slice, out…

They have to put Faber and Lawler in the game and keep that ass-clown, Kimbo Slice, out…

Faber won't be in it. He's in the WEC, which is owned and operated by Zuffa (same people that own/operate the UFC)

I have no idea who any of these guys are. The only recognizable names are MMA'ers from the late 90's early 2000's. In my opinion the only 2 things that can create success for this game are…

    1. Taking fight nights physics and applying them to MMA

    2. Making the game extremely customizable and centering on the users "created character" (gameface and all that jazz) rather then trying to spotlight all the fighters they end up signing.

This game cannot just be another ring with lesser known shirtless tough guys beating the hell out of each other. We already have two solid fighting games with way bigger names involved and a satisfying amount of polish. They have to think “Outside of the box” on this one if they have any plans on making money.

Agreed. There is a long ways to go though. I feel like they have to build stories around these guys so that people know who they are and want to support them.

you do know were talking about EA right????

They'll find some way to screw this up.

I think building stories is necessary in this case because most people wont really known these fighters relative to UFC fighters and Boxers from Fight Night. I think the fighter’s stories should play a backseat role to your character.

The game should be centered around a "Road to Glory" type of mode where you create yourself via Gameface and start a career. But again, it can't be the same old schedule a fight, do some training a then jump into the ring format. This is where they should build an in depth story that will create an immersive experience for the user.

What if in this "RTG" type mode my character lived in an actual city, (similar to GTA) had an apartment, had to get up and drive to training? As your fighter gains popularity more people notice him in the streets, you get a nicer apartment, women throw themselves at you, you can go buy stuff with your fight money….

There needs to be something different about this game when comparing it to it competition. This is the type of mode that can separate you from the pack.

Obviously I dont have all the answers and those are just some off the top suggestions, but I really feel like the fighting game genre structure is really stale in general. There is never any depth outside of the ring. Using your character to fight in the context of a good flexible story line can be appealing when its a sport like 1on 1 combat to the death…Get creative if you want my money EA.
